1973 Topps–Rudy May #102

I’m collecting the 1973 set, slowly but surely. This post is the latest in my quest for the completion.

  • Purchase Price – $.11 (Ebay lot, 40/$4.25)
  • On the back (toon) – Rudy once had 9 straight K’s in a game.
    • “Rudy now ranks third on the all-time Angels strikeout list behind Dean Chance and Andy Messersmith.  He once had distinction of fanning 23 batters in American Legion game.”
  • Signed by the Minnesota Twins as an amateur free agent in 1962.
  • Debut – April 18, 1965.
  • 1965, 1969-1974 (Angels), 1974-1976, 1980-1983 (Yankees),  1976-1977 (Orioles), 1978-1979 (Expos)
  • Born in Coffeyville, KS

Led the league in ERA (2.46) in 1980, which was his best year, posting a 15-5 record for the Yankees.
