Welcome

This blog is about sports cards. I tend to only purchase cheap items so don't come hear expecting to see big money cards. My teams collections are Chicago White Sox and Michigan Wolverines. I also have a bunch of player collections.

Ebay Pick-up #10

ebay16a

I know, it doesn’t look like much.  It was a 3 card Paul Konerko lot.  1 Los Angeles Dodger rookie (yes please).  1 minor league card (yes please).  And what was the 3rd card of this lot?

ebay16b

BAM!  A certified autographed card.  Sure he’s in his high school uniform, but guess who doesn’t care, this guy!.  And how much was this 3 card autographed lot.

$3.99/shipped.

Completed Team Sets–2009 Bowman

team-09bowman

My first Bowman set completion.  Or at least the base set of it.  This is another set that annoys me because of all the extra sets included.  Draft Picks, Prospects, Gold then Chrome and it starts all over again.

Ebay Pick-up #9

ebay10(1)

  • Josh Fields – 2005 Topps Turkey Red autograph ($2.25)
  • Josh Fields – 2005 Topps Turkey Red White autograph ($2.37)
  • Jon Garland – 2005 Topps Turkey Red relic ($1.25)

All 3 of those come from one seller with free shipping so the price next to the item is the price including shipping.

Vintage Collection - 1978

We’ll start our official first post of the Vintage collection with 2 1978 cards.

vintage78genegarber50   vintage78rickreuschel50

Gene Garber of the Philadelphia Phillies and Rick Reuschel of the Chicago Cubs.  Paid $.50 each for these on Ebay.  You’ll see a bunch of late 80’s stuff at $.50 because I found a seller who start’s them all at that price.  I have since changed and only bid on early 70’s and earlier with his cards because I was spending too much money with the late 70’s cards.  Because that was most of what he was selling.

This is my 25th and 26th card from the 1978 Topps set.

1964 Topps - 1
1966 Topps - 1
1968 Topps – 1
1970 Topps - 1
1971 Topps - 1
1972 Topps - 1
1973 Topps - 292 ($14.72)
1974 Topps - 6
1976 Topps - 1
1978 Topps - 26 ($1)
1981 Donruss - 1
1981 Topps - 491 ($2.79)
1982 Donruss - 10
1982 Topps - 4
1983 Topps - 1
1984 Topps - 1
1985 Topps - 12
1986 Donruss - 1
1986 Topps - 13
1987 Fleer - 1
1987 Topps – 59

All the numbers with no prices are what I started with.  I went ahead and moved the price total from the 1973 Topps and the 1981 Topps over here.  Like I said I would in the previous vintage collection post, I plan on keep a running total.

Completed Team Sets–2008 Upper Deck SP Authentic

team-08udspauthentic

Thome, Konerko and Swisher?  Really, Nick Swisher.  I realize he’s a popular guy and all but not in Chicago.  He did well in Oakland, sucked for us, and is doing ok in New York.  Another 3 card team set, guess that makes it a little easier to complete some sets.

Vintage collection

This is the first post of my newly announced vintage collection.  I’ll keep a count at the bottom like I do my 1973 Topps and 1981 Topps posts when I receive new cards for the collection.  I’m not going to post all the cards that I started with.  Granted, it isn’t a whole lot if you exclude the 1973 and 1981 Topps.  But I don’t want to pile on a bunch of 1987 Topps on you.  Most of what I have, I’ve probably posted on this blog before when I picked it up anyways.

Here are my running counts to start with.  If a year isn’t listed, then I don’t have any as of yet.

1964 Topps - 1
1966 Topps - 1
1968 Topps - 1
1970 Topps - 1
1971 Topps - 1
1972 Topps - 1
1973 Topps - 316
1974 Topps - 6
1976 Topps - 1
1978 Topps - 24
1981 Donruss - 1
1981 Topps - 494
1982 Donruss - 10
1982 Topps - 4
1983 Topps - 1
1984 Topps - 1
1985 Topps - 12
1986 Donruss - 1
1986 Topps - 13
1987 Fleer - 1
1987 Topps – 59

I’ve got some more coming and I’ll post those as I get them.  I’ll update these counts as I go at the bottom of those posts.  I actually had to cut back some of the buying, because I was winning a lot more at $.50 then I thought I would.  So I have restricted the $.50/max to 1973 and older.  I was winning a lot of late 70’s and early 80’s with the $.50/max and it was building up quickly.

Ebay Pick-up #8

I purchased a 20 card lot of Paul Konerko’s, check these out.

ebay09a

3 Los Angeles Dodger Paul Konerko’s

ebay09b

And of course, some Chicago White Sox Paul Konerko’s

ebay09c

Some more White Sox Paul Konerko’s.  That’s 13 Konerko’s for the Paul Konerko Collection.  But wait, there’s more.

ebay09d

I already had these 2 for the PK collection but I need them for the White Sox Collection.

So out of the 20 card lot, I needed 15 of them.  Not bad, but these are cheap ebay purchases.  You want to know what I paid for this lot, don’t you?

  • 20 card lot – purchase price ($.99), shipping price ($1.95)  for a grand total of $2.94.  Divided by 15 (amount of cards kept for my collections) gives us the cost of $.20 per card.

Not too shabby at all.  I still don’t have any Konerko’s with the Reds.  I’m not positive there are any but I want to say I remember some from back when I collected before.  If I was forced to guess, I’d say 1999 Topps.  I had a crap load of those before.

Completed Team Sets–2008 Upper Deck First Edition Update

team-08udfirstedupdate

I completed the update part of this set only so far.  But it’s the largest team set that I’ve posted so far with the 5 cards above and the 5 cards below.

team-08udfirstedupdate02

Another no border set which I like.  Some of the borders are cool and I’m not totally against them, but I prefer the cards without them.  I’m not a big fan of these sets that get released in different parts.  I understand it and why they do it.  But I tend to buy a bunch of the first set released because it’s a new product.  By the time series 2 gets released, I’m over it.

Ebay Pick-up #7

ebay08g

I picked up this lot of White Sox cards.  I know it doesn’t look like much here.  But I needed all of the above for my White Sox Collection.  But wait, there’s more.

ebay08f

All 9 of these Frank Thomas’ are new to the White Sox Collection.

ebay08e

A couple of Michael Jordan’s.  I loved him in a Bulls uniform so you know I’m going to like him in a Sox uniform.

ebay08d

These 4 Topps Finest.  How can you not like shiny.

ebay08a

Even a couple of vintage I needed.  Also my first 1961 Fleer.  And if that wasn’t enough,  This lot even hit my player collections.

ebay08c

3 new Paul Konerko’s.  All shiny

ebay08b

2 more Luis Aparicio’s and both with a vintage look.  The one on the right is numbered to /65.

This 44 card lot (only a few that I already had) was a great lot for me.  Can you guess what I paid.  Go ahead, guess.

$3.51/shipped.  Which is approximately $.09 a card for just the ones I kept.  Yep, definitely my kind of lot.

Completed Team Sets–2007 Fleer Ultra

team-07fleerultra

I like this set as well.  Good action shots, no borders and I really like the black background on the rookie cards.  Goes well with the black and gray uniforms.  My first completed set of more than 6 cards.  I bought a bunch of these from a fellow blogger and almost completed the set but was a card or 2 short which I ended up getting in trades.

And I’m off again

I’m going to make a change in my collecting again.  I am still collecting what I’m currently collecting but I’m going to add something.  Something rather huge.  But I’m doing it Jeff style, or cheap.  Did I just call myself a cheap bastard?

Let me start by saying, and you may have noticed, but I like vintage.  And every time I pick up some vintage, I get more excited.  A lot more excited than I do with any newer products.  I still plan on picking up newer cards as far as my collections go, but I’m also going to start picking up all vintage cards for the right price.  Let me rephrase, vintage and then some.

Back when I was a kid, I wanted all cards.  If I didn’t have it, I wanted it.  When I gave up collecting (high school) I had ten’s of thousands of cards.  I never tried to complete sets, even thought I probably had some and didn’t know it.  But I wanted everything.  And that’s what I’m going to do with vintage (and then some).  Only I’m not going to buy just because I don’t have it, but rather if I come across something that is cheap, then I’ll pick it up.  I’m going to collect everything from vintage thru 1987.  I know, your thinking 1987?  Really?  But that was the last year I was really purchasing the crap out of cards.  So I’m going to collect all the way thru then for memories sake.  The 1990’s just didn’t do much for me.  I collected some again in 1993 and 1994 then stopped.  And again in 2000 thru 2002 and stopped.  And then again at the very end of 2010 thru today.  I have found the joy of collecting again, thanks to all of you bloggers and I don’t think this will be a 2 year binge and then get out again.  Here are some of my rules for this collection, but we all know rules are made to be broken.

  • As I already stated, anything vintage thru 1987.
  • I’m only collecting base, I may pick up odds and ends but I’m really only going after base cards.
  • As far as brands, the big 3 (back in the day)  Topps, Fleer, Donruss.
  • I’m only going after 1 of each, I don’t need stacks of dupes.

Pricing rules.  These will mainly apply to online purchases.

  • Vintage thru 1980, max of $.54.  I always add $.04 on bids in case someone bid’s $.50, I outbid them with the $.04.
  • 1981-1985, max of $.29.
  • 1986-1987, max of $.19.

So as you can tell by the max bids above, this collection is going to go very fast.  But it’s not about speed, it’s about having fun.  And that’s what this hobby is all about.  I’ve already started bidding on some stuff, we’ll see if I win it.  I even picked up a few vintage at my LCS about a month ago at a $.25 a piece.  When I picked them up, I didn’t even know why I was picking them up.  They were a quarter, and they were vintage, that’s all I knew.  I guess I knew back then what I wanted to do without really knowing it.

lcs01

That, my friends, is a great purchase for a buck.  And a nice start to the vintage collection.  Maybe this weekend I’ll take some time and create a page and show my progress for each year.

note – I’m not asking you to send me all your vintage, I certainly don’t have much to trade with but I am starting to pick up a few cards to trade with in the future so hopefully I’ll be able to start doing some small trades again soon.

Ebay Pick-up #6

ebay06

This was probably my best purchase in this round of Ebay pick-ups.  This was a 12 card lot, the above 8 were the only ones I needed.  I got this lot for $4.05.  Yes you read that right.  A Hall of Famer lot, with 9 vintage cards (I already had the 1976 Topps that came with it) for under $5.  This leaves me with only needing the 1962, 1966 and 1972 to have all the base cards from his playing years.

Completed Team Sets–2006 Upper Deck Future Stars

team-06udfuturestars

My first team set with Jim Thome, my second with Paul Konerko and my first with Jermaine Dye.  I like this set, the blue background with the stars is pretty cool.  Or maybe because it’s sort of shiny.

1973 Topps

I’m collecting the 1973 set, slowly but surely. This post is the latest in my quest for the completion.

73topps-carlmorton331

  • Card Facts – Carl Morton – Montreal Expos – Card #331
  • Purchase Price – $.23 (Ebay lot 13/$2.99)

 73topps-daveroberts39

 73topps-franklinzy286

 73topps-jimpalmer341

73topps-lynnmcglothen114

73topps-randymoffitt43

73topps-stevebraun16

73topps-waltwilliams297

  • Card Facts – Walt Williams – Cleveland Indians – Card #297
  • Purchase Price – $.21 (Ebay 4/$.85)

73topps-billrobinson37

73topps-danmcginn527

3 free cards in this lot, we’ll see how much my numbers are effected.

  • Cards posted in this set – 100
  • Total price paid – $14.72
  • Average price per card – $0.15
  • Cards left to post – 584 (including NNO Checklists)
  • Percentage posted – 100/684 (15% posted)
  • Percentage completed – 316/684 (46% completed)

Hit the century mark on cards posted.  Average price per card went up by 2 cents up to $.15.  Percentage posted went up a percent as well but I think it will every post with posting 10 cards at a time.  I haven’t purchased many lately, I really need to hit some shows and pick more up.

Ebay Pick-up #5

ebay05

Picked up this Jim Thome relic for Upper Deck for $2.25/shipped.  It was under my $3 max for relics and it’s of Jim Thome.  I was happy when they signed him even though sometimes he frustrated me, he has always been a good guy and a great team mate.  How can you not want that on your team.

Completed Team Sets–2005 Upper Deck PowerUp

team-05udpowerup

Another one not to hard to finish but considering I wasn’t actually trying to finish it, I’ll take it.  I assume both were probably sent by fellow traders.  Frank Thomas has been in all the team sets but 1 so far while Magglio Ordonez has been in all 5.  Not sure how that happened since Thomas could arguably be one of the greatest White Sox hitters of all time.  Ordonez was great while he was here, but not Frank Thomas great.

Trade with Uncle Moe

Moe over at “My 2008 Topps Set Blog” sent over some cards in exchange for some cards I had sent him.  I think he claimed some when I did my giveaway a few months ago but I’m not positive.  I know I had sent him some Arizona Diamondbacks for him.  But let’s get to what he sent me.

trade-08stopps06

Some cards from 2000 and beyond.

trade-08stopps05

Some cards from the 1990’s.

trade-08stopps04

Some cards from the 1980’s.  I don’t think I have any 1986 mini’s.  And I love getting the 80’s cards because I don’t really have very many.  Which is why I liked to see the following cards as well.

trade-08stopps03

All these 80’s cards were new to the collection.  I had a number of 1981 cards since I’m building that set slowly but all the ones above are new.  I didn’t have any 1982 Fleer yet and that set brings back all kinds of memories.  Loved seeing those.  And believe it or not, I only had a few of the 1987 Fleer cards so all the ones above are new as well.  Great job hitting the 80’s team sets Moe.  Greatly appreciated those.

trade-08stopps01

He even managed to hit my Paul Konerko Collection with these 3 cards.  I like the look to the Fleer at the bottom.  And if you know Moe, you know he also collects Luis Aparicio.  So I was pleased to see these as well.

trade-08stopps07

All new to the Luis Aparicio Collection.  I really like the fan favorites, you know, because it looks like vintage.

And if all those weren’t enough, he slipped in a relic card.

trade-08stopps02

And a relic card of a huge part of the World Series Champions in 2005.  I’ve always liked Joe Crede and hated that he had so many back issues.  I even liked him when he went to the Minnesota Twins if that says anything.

Thanks again for all the great cards.  Be sure to check out “My 2008 Topps Set Blog” where he is trying to get every card from 2008 Topps autographed.  Personally I enjoy the Aparicio posts more.

Ebay Pick-up #4

ebay04a

Vintage!!!!  I really like the first card.  And I needed the other 2 for team sets.  I paid a little more for these than I would have liked but with the discounted shipping, the whole lot was cheap.

ebay04b

I paid $8.74/shipped for all of these.  I won the Adam Dunn relic and the seller offered multiple cards for same shipping.  So essentially I paid $1.14 for each card.  When I win a card, I always check to see if the seller offers multiple cards with little or no more shipping.  Especially if they have a store.  I never would have bought any of these with a $2.50 shipping charge.  But all of these for $2.50, I’ll take that all day.  Here’s how it breaks down per card.

Completed Team Sets–2005 Upper Deck ESPN

team-05udespn

My first team set that features Paulie.  Of course, it also features a Scott Podsednik in a Milwaukee Brewers uniform.  I actually liked this ESPN set when it first came out because I though ESPN was awesome.  Now I know it for what it really is (Eastern Seaboard Propaganda Network).  I don’t hardly ever watch ESPN anymore.  Unless the Chicago White Sox are playing the Boston Red Sox or the New York Yankees since those are the only 2 clubs that get played.

Trade with Dennis

Dennis and I met up at the University of Michigan youth day a few weekends back for a quick in person trade.  Real quick for me because I only had 1 card for him while he brought me a whole Walmart bag full of stuff.  The majority of it were Cubs cards for my son but also some cards from me.  To see the awesome Michigan card he sent me, check it out over at “Too Many Manninghams”.  But I’ll show you some of the other goodies he sent me.

trade-tmgrandersons03

All of these are new Frank Thomas cards for the White Sox Collection.  And one Jim Thome card in there as well if you can find it.  I have a crap load of Frank Thomas cards so for him to hit this many that I didn’t is pretty impressive.

trade-tmgrandersons01

He sent me some Indianapolis Colts cards, which I don’t collect anymore but I do have a nephew who just got into football cards recently so I’ll give them those, minus the Peyton Manning cards above because those go to the Peyton Manning Collection.

Like I said above, you need to go check out “Too Many Manninghams” to see the big hit of the usual lopsided trade.

Ebay Pick-up #3

ebay03a

John Danks relic from 2010 Topps Allen & Ginter’s

ebay03b

Carlos Quentin relic from 2010 Topps Allen & Ginter’s

Picked both of these up for $2.74/shipped a piece.  They both fall into my $3 max on relics.  Most of the A&G relics I’ll put the $3 max bid on because I like them.  Some of the older relics, I’ll only go to a couple of bucks instead just because they aren’t that expensive of cards to begin with.
