1973 Topps–Gene Michael #265

I’m collecting the 1973 set, slowly but surely. This post is the latest in my quest for the completion.

  • Card Facts – Gene Michael – New York Yankees – Card # 265
  • Purchase Price – $.11 (Ebay lot, 40/$4.25)
  • On the back (toon) – The “stick” almost played basketball for the NY Knicks.
    • “Gene came through with early season Triple & Homer to win games for the Yankees in 1972”
  • Signed by the Pirates as a free agent in 1959.
  • Debut – July 15, 1966.
  • 1966 (Pirates), 1967 (Dodgers), 1968-1974 (Yankees), 1975 (Tigers)
  • Born in Kent, OH
  • School – Kent State University
Love the action shot, but you can tell it was 70’s photography.  Played the majority of his career at Shortstop, but played some 2nd and 3rd as well.  And even has some Pitching stats for 1 game.  He pitched 3 innings, gave up 5 run with 5 hits and 3 strikeouts.  It is said that he was a master of the hidden ball trick and had used it multiple times in the majors with success. 
After his 10 year career, he went on to manage the Yankees and the Cubs.
