1981 Topps–Juan Beniquez #306

I’m collecting the 1981 set, slowly but surely. This post is the latest in my quest for the completion.

  • Purchase Price – $0.05 (ebay lot – 100/$4.99)
  • On the back (toon, bottom left) – none
  • On the back (toon, bottom right) – none
  • Signed by the Boston Red Sox as an amateur free agent in 1968.
  • Debut – September 4, 1971

  • Born in San Sebastian, PR

Juan won a Gold Glove in 1977 with the Rangers.  He played most of his career games in the outfield between all 3 positions.  But also had almost 100 games between all 4 infield positions as well.  He played for 8 different teams in his 17 season in the majors.  Had 4 straight seasons between 1983-1986 with a .300 or better average with the Angels and Orioles.

  • Cards posted in this set – 16
  • Total price paid – $1.34
  • Average price per card – $0.08
  • Cards left to post – 711

Average price per card is down to $.08.  I don’t really expect it to climb much because this set isn’t a high dollar set.  I can’t really think of any major purchases needed for it.

  1. Aside from 1986 Topps, this set had the weakest rookie crop of the 1980s. Which means fewer high dollar cards of course. I'd say the Raines, Fernando, Gibson, and Baines are probably the best of the set. I might tackle this set next, I do love the caps.
