Welcome

This blog is about sports cards. I tend to only purchase cheap items so don't come hear expecting to see big money cards. My teams collections are Chicago White Sox and Michigan Wolverines. I also have a bunch of player collections.

Cheap Ebay Pick-up

ebay10

  • 6 card lot of 1975 Topps ($1.71/shipped)

I only needed 4 of the 6 cards in the lot, but at $.43/card for the 4, it still was under the criteria of $.50 for vintage Sox cards.

Box Break from Kyle

Kyle over at “JABO’s” held a box break.  My main reason for joining was for the 2012 Heritage, but I didn’t have much of the other boxes he was breaking either which made it even better.  First, I’ll show off the few extra cards Kyle was nice enough to throw in.

boxbreak03

This is my 3rd die cut from the Upper Deck X, when I pulled it out I thought it was a dupe, but I didn’t have the Dye one.  I knew I didn’t have the Shoe Box Collection because I have never seen or heard of that set.  So it was really cool that Kyle threw in the next one.

boxbreak05

A Little Luis for the Aparicio collection.  I love vintage and vintage reprints so I love this card.

But you’re here for the box break so I’ll get to those.  First up, the 2007 Upper Deck SP.

boxbreak01

Thome and Konerko.  I already had the Konerko in the player collection so this one goes into the White Sox Collection.

Next up, the 2004 Fleer Platinum.

boxbreak02

Didn’t get too much out that box, just these 3 and lots of dupes.  I think I got 3 Crede’s and a second Loaiza.

boxbreak04

Next up, 2011 Bowman Platinum.  I got these 4, Beckham and Sale base, Beckham red and Morel green.  I like this set, maybe just because it’s shiny.  I like the parallels too, except for the fact that I have more to collect.  I also got an Adam Dunn base but I already had one of those.

And the main reason I got in the break, 2012 Heritage.

boxbreak06

I love these cards.  Obviously because they look vintage.  But I like the card stock it’s on.  A little thicker than usual.  I also like the team cards.  I didn’t get any inserts but then again, I don’t know if the Sox even have any.  I know there is a Luis Aparicio Then and Now that I need for the player collection but he’s with the Orioles on it.

Last but not least, one for the player collection.

boxbreak07

Thanks Kyle, love your breaks.  Be sure to check his blog out.  He’s constantly doing breaks and drafts and all kinds of goodness.  “Juuust a Bit Outside

Autopilot

I know I haven’t been around much.  Just kind of on autopilot around here but that’s probably how it will be for awhile.  I haven’t bought packs for myself since probably December.  I’ve gotten in JABO’s box breaks in order to get some 2012 cards.  I got the flagship and Heritage and have signed up for Gypsy Queen.  I need to get some Opening Day but that probably won’t happen as I’m pretty much stopping all trading (except you Dennis, but you will have to wait a bit).  The packs are cheap enough but I haven’t been able to find single packs at Walmart when I go in.  All they’ve had is the rack packs and blasters.  I was hoping just to pick up a pack here or there, give them to my son to open and keep with the agreement that any White Sox cards are mine.

I received some bad news a few weeks ago so I have put a stop to most of my buying.  The Cheap Ebay posts you’ve been seeing were all purchased before the bad (financial) news.  The last thing I’ve purchased was a lot of ‘73’s from Ted “Crinkly Wrappers” and that was when I found out about the financial bad news.  There is good financial news for us possibly coming.  The news itself maybe in a month or so, the actual money in our pockets could be as far as 9 months or so.  Of course, what really sucks in there is a card show this weekend.  I may still go and just see what I can for $5 or something.

The main reason the trading has been stopped is because I just haven’t purchased many cards so I have very little to trade.  I plan on listing some stuff on Ebay, nothing high dollar, probably vintage lots.  Just so I have a little money for some cheap purchases, just to keep the addiction in check.  I also plan on getting a list out of what I do have for commons or base and let you all know how many of each set I have, then if you want to let me know a link to you want lists to that set, I’ll see if I have anything.  That post will go out when I have time.  Don’t comment on this one for these, wait till I post some of what I have.  I’ll let you all know when I get the lots up on Ebay and if any of you bid and win any, I’ll discount the shipping or throw other cards in or whatever.

I do have plenty of ‘81 and ‘73 posts to compose and put out.  As well as lots of Player Collection Spotlight and cheap Ebay pickups.  I even have a few trade and box break posts to get up.  Most of it is scanned, it’s just a matter of taking the time to get the posts together.  I have actually been spending more time on my other blog “Random Thoughts from a Random Guy”, it’s more of an everyday life blog about the kids, dealing with my wife’s MS, and other things in my life.  I’m not asking everyone to go and read everything, just putting that out there.  I still plan on posting at least once a day here but like I said, there will be a lot less commentary just because without purchasing much new product, I don’t really have much to say.  That may change with the upcoming season starting this week.  We will see how that goes.

Although I tend to stay a few days behind, I am still reading everybody’s blogs.  Seeing all of your blogs is helping with the not being able to purchase anything.  Getting to see all your great cards helps curb the appetite so everybody keep posting (like I have to tell you).  So your blogs are my therapy for now.  I’ll get a check in the mail to all of you guys since your my therapists.  Oh wait, I have no money, looks like you all are working for free.

1981 Topps–McRae, Kaat, Oates, Milbourne

An all free from trade post.  Percentage posted up another percent.  We might be up to about 20% if I would post these more often.  I’ll try to get a little better.

1973 Topps–Orta, Harrison, Virdon, Clines

I’m collecting the 1973 set, slowly but surely. This post is the latest in my quest for the completion.

73topps-jorgeorta194

  • Card Facts – Jorge Orta – Chicago White Sox – Card #194
  • Purchase Price – free (Trade with “Crinkly Wrappers”)

73topps-roricharrison229

  • Card Facts – Roric Harrison – Baltimore Orioles – Card #229
  • Purchase Price – $.11 (Ebay lot 40/$4.25)

73topps-billvirdon517

  • Card Facts – Bill Virdon – Pittsburgh Pirates – Card #517
  • Purchase Price – $.17 (Ebay lot - 6/$1.04)

73topps-geneclines333

  • Card Facts – Gene Clines – Pittsburgh Pirates – Card #333
  • Purchase Price – $.18 (Ebay lot - 4/$.73)

  • Cards posted in this set – 65
  • Total price paid – $7.55
  • Average price per card – $0.12
  • Cards left to post – 619 (including NNO Checklists)
  • Percentage posted – 65/684 (10% posted)
  • Percentage completed – 299/684 (44% completed)

Even paying for 3 cards in this group, the average per card stayed at $.12.  But you may notice the set completed went from 15% to 37% with a lot of card I bought from Ted at “Crinkly Wrappers” who just finished his set.  Then went up from 37% to 44% with a bunch of 4 card lots I got an ebay.  So a huge boost to the 1973 set since the last post.

I have to scan all the cards from Ted and add them to the randomization of these.  I’ll try to get more of these posts ready so you don’t have to go so long without them.  I know you missed them.

Player Collection Spotlight–Tom Seaver

In this series, I randomly select a card from my player collections and show it off here. Being that it’s random, it could be a base, insert, parallel, auto, relic or any other kind of card I have. It could be from Paul Konerko, Tom Seaver, Billy Williams, Dave Dravecky and even Mike Hart or Peyton Manning. I will put a mark next to it on my PC list so it doesn’t get repeated.

Cheap Ebay Pick-up

ebay09

  • 1974 Topps 9 card lot ($1.71/shipped)

I won 4 of these vintage lots at $1 shipping for the first one and $.50 for the next 3.  So I divided the $2.50 shipping into 4 and added it to the price I paid for each lot.  So it came to $.63 per lot.  This was a 9 card lot but I only needed 5 of them, so divided by 5 instead of 9, it came to $.34/card.

The Hit King with a Perfect Game

TheHitKing” from “Spoke Bait and the Game” had posted a comment on one of my Cheap Ebay Pick-ups page where I had stated how much my max bids are and said he had just listed a card I might want and set a price if I wanted it.  I jumped on it, here it is.

trade-spokebait

I couldn’t pass that up at that price. Mark Buehrle relic, Allen & Ginter.  I never find his relics for that price on Ebay.  And being the great guy he is, he also through some extra Sox for me.

trade-spokebait02

All these are new to the Sox collection.  I thought I had the Buehrle Heritage but apparently not.  A lot of people are down on Dunn, I look at it as a horrible year, and I think he’ll bounce back.  He’s already looking better in spring training.  So I liked getting the 3 Dunn cards.  And you can never go wrong with one the “Good Guys” in baseball, Jim Thome.

Be sure to check out “Spoke Bait and the Game

Trade with Dennis, part 4.

Previously:  part 1, part 2, part 3

And my final post of the big package from Dennis, is the cards for my player collections.  You saw the Mike Hart’s in part 3 over at “TMM”, here’s the rest of them.

trade-dennis21

Billy Williams including a 1975 mini.  All 4 are new to my PC of him.

trade-dennis18

3 more Tom Seaver’s for my collection.  I thought I had the ‘84 Topps leaders, but I have the career strikeout leaders with Seaver on it.  I like the photo on the Stadium Club.  Staring down the batter (probably waiting for a sign, but that sounds better.)

trade-dennis14

More Peyton Mannings, yes, I’m still collecting him even though he is no longer a Colt.  Just wait, he’ll resign with the Colts.  (I can dream can’t I.)  I collect Manning but he’s not a huge focus, but if you want to send some just to get rid of, for free of course, I don’t have much left for trade, feel free.

trade-dennis19

2 more Konerko’s.  I like both of these.  Nice additions to the PC.

trade-dennis20

And you though I was done with relics.  Here’s a relic addition to the Konerko collection.  Numbered to /250.

trade-dennis17

2 additions to the newly started Luis Aparicio collection.  I’m new to these Donruss Originals, but I’m liking them.  I just got a bunch of Buehrle’s in that set in a previous trade.

trade-dennis16

My first relic of Aparicio, even though, technically it’s not.  But it is of the old Cominsky Park stadium seat.  Great action photo.

So that completes my 4 part trade posts from Dennis.  He told me I would freak, he wasn’t kidding.  Thanks, bro!  Huge boost to all my collections.  You are a God among Cardboard Gods.

Trade with Dennis, part 2.

Previously:  part 1

As you may have noticed in part 1, Dennis overdid himself with the Wolverines he sent me.  Well he did with the baseball side too.  So sit back and enjoy part 2 of this 4 part trade with Dennis.  Yes, 4 parts, that’s how awesome the cards he sent me were.

trade-dennis01

The Topps Gallery are some great looking cards.  The middle one of Frank Thomas is numbered to /50.  All these are new to the White Sox collection.  I didn’t have any of the Topps 205, let alone the mini one.  And the Konerko I already had in my player collection so that one goes to this collection.  And you can never go wrong with a Hall of Famer like Hoyt Wilhelm.

trade-dennis07

Frank Thomas – 2012 Topps Manupatch

Sweet!  I’ve been looking for one of these, but I’m too much of a cheap bastard to pay for them.  Luckily, I got great friends.

trade-dennis02

Jim Thome – 2009 Upper Deck Goodwin Champions relic

trade-dennis04

Jim Thome – 2008 Upper Deck Masterpieces Captured in Canvas relic

A couple relics of the nicest guy in the league.  And I, like the most of you, love the Masterpieces.  And the framed ones are even better.

trade-dennis03

Goose Gossage – 2011 Topps 60 relic

This card is great.  The uniform, a Hall of Famer, my first relic of his.  Awesome!

trade-dennis05

Jermaine Dye – 2008 Topps Moment’s & Milestones autograph

World Series MVP Jermaine Dye’s autograph.  And that’s not even the best auto in this lot from Dennis.

trade-dennis06

Harold Baines - 2005 Topps Autograph

One of my favorite players for the Sox.  My favorite uniforms.  And an on card autograph.  I love this card.

Seriously, go back and look at each of these players that I got relics and auto’s of.  Hall of Famers, future Hall of Famers, World Series MVP, and one of the top Sox (who some argue is Hall of Fame worthy).

Dennis way overdid himself.  And there’s 2 more posts left.  Be sure to stick around and check them out.  Meanwhile, check out Dennis over at “Too Many Grandersons” and “Too Many Manninghams”.

I have more ebay pick-ups in the near future as well.

  • Magglio Ordonez – 2002 Fleer Box Score World Piece Relic ($1.99/shipped)

Yeah, he was a star here and for the Tigers for a few years.  But I’m not a big fan of his.  So he only got the $2 max bid.  But that worked out anyways as I won it with a $.99 bid and $1 shipping.

Cheap Ebay Pick-up

  • Chris Sale – 2011 Bowman Sterling Relic ($2.99/shipped)

$2.50 shipping but I won it with a $.49 bid.  I know your thinking I usually only put $2 on relics of nobodys.  But Sale had a great run out of the bullpen last year and is in our starting rotation this year.  Since I’m expecting big things out of him, I moved him to the $3 tier with other stars.

  • Gordon Beckham – 2012 Topps Golden Moments Relic ($2.94/shipped)

Yeah, it’s listed twice.  I had been bidding on these for a week or so with no luck.  They were all going up of my max bid of ($3).  I put bids on all kinds of things that I don’t think I’ll win.  I put bids on both of these thinking I wouldn’t win either.  Surprise, I won them both.  Not a big deal, I do keep dupes of relics/autos/seriel numbered cards.  If somebody requested one in a trade, I would consider it since I have 2 but otherwise, both will stay in my collection.

Cheap Ebay pick-ups

I’ve decided since I don’t have much to post with my lack of buying packs anymore, that I would list my Ebay pick-ups in separate posts.  To stretch them out and get some more posts for the blog.  I’ve picked up quite a few cheap cards in the last couple of weeks so I should have plenty of posts for awhile.

ebay01

  • Ken Boyer – 1968 Topps ($.51/shipped)

I really didn’t think I’d win this.  I only put a bid of $.01 with the seller charging $.50 shipping.  I wasn’t too shocked to be winning it on the last day, but was definitely shocked when I got the alert on my phone that I had won.  I figured with $.01 bid, I’d lose it to the next bid of $.06.  That’s the way my luck is.

One thing I’ve had to get used to when it came to bidding cheaply on Ebay was losing by just a little bit.  I place my maximum bids then I don’t follow them at all.  I usually don’t know I’m even winning something until I get the alert on my phone.  Then I don’t go looking for cards I lost, because I don’t want to know if I lost it by the next bid.  This has worked well for me and I haven’t gotten into any bidding wars, which is the biggest mistake you can make when bidding on Ebay.

  • James Baldwin – 1997 Upper Deck ($.06/shipped)
  • Tony Phillips – 1997 Upper Deck ($.06/shipped)
  • Chris Snopek – 1997 Upper Deck ($.11/shipped)

I won all these from the same seller.  I needed all 3 of them for my White Sox Collection.  All of these were in lots of 2, so I got dupes of all 3.  But since I didn’t pay much for them I can’t complain.  I only put max bids of $.25 on each (there were 3 separate auctions).  They all came from the same seller which is why I’m showing them together.

Cheap Ebay Pick-up

ebay02

  • Donald Lucy - 2004 Upper Deck SP Prospects Draft Pick auto #’d 107/400 ($1.82/shipped)

Put my usual max bid for relics/autos of players that aren’t that popular of $2.  This wasn’t a surprise to win unlike the last ebay post.  I do remember him playing during call-ups and the Sox announcers talking about him now and then.  Although I want to say they called him Donny, not Donald.  He was our catcher of the future awhile back but never did anything that warranted any major playing time in the pros.

Player Collection Spotlight–Paul Konerko

In this series, I randomly select a card from my player collections and show it off here. Being that it’s random, it could be a base, insert, parallel, auto, relic or any other kind of card I have. It could be from Paul Konerko, Tom Seaver, Billy Williams, Dave Dravecky and even Mike Hart or Peyton Manning. I will put a mark next to it on my PC list so it doesn’t get repeated.

Catching up is so hard to do

I’m slowly trying to get caught up on reading everybody’s blogs again.  The section I’m in at work doesn’t allow me much time to read and my foreman’s been a dick about me reading on the line anyways so once again, I’m behind.  I haven’t really had as much time to sit on the laptop at home lately, Boy and Girls scouts seem to save up all their activities for March and April.  I see I missed some contests again, damn it.  That’s the real reason I need to stay current.

I’ve got some cheap Ebay pickups stuff to scan, hopefully today and I would like to get my team want lists finished sometime this weekend.  Plus I always have more 1981 and 1973 posts to get ready.  And I still have a few of my random PC cards already finished to throw up on here.  I also received a trade package in the mail on Thursday that I need to scan.  While I love receiving packages of Sox cards, it’s such a task to get them all organized and put away.  I’m not as creative as all of you so I will be posting the trade package in a new way, maybe the Ebay pickup as well.  Of course, now that I’ve got a new system to post trade packages, I won’t be trading as much.  I haven’t bought any packs of cards yet this year for myself.  I’ve received a few packs as a gift and bought my son a few packs so my lack of trading from here on out isn’t because I hate trading, because I love trading.  It’s more because I just don’t have the cards to reciprocate the packages you guys send me.  What few cards I do have, I list on Ebay just to get rid of and whatever I make off of those, I turn around and buy cards for myself.  I’m not selling anything high dollar, and I only list 50 cards a month because every seller now gets 50 free listings a month.  I think out of the 50 cards I listed last month, I ended up with just under $5 if that tells you anything.  I mainly listed vintage at $.79 starting bid with free shipping.  They were all common vintage so I wasn’t expecting much to begin with.  Most of the cards I have to list aren’t anything I could probably sell charging $2 to ship because they aren’t that good.  But it’s something and it’s less money out of my pocket that I get to spend on cards I do want.

When I said I wasn’t as creative as a lot of you, what I meant was my posting tend to basically be what I have gotten for my PC’s.  You all have great subjects and post about a lot of different things about cards, that’s why I read so many of your blogs.  I tend to just stick with PC stuff because that’s all I know or have to talk about.  I throw out a little bit about my sports teams on occasion   Which is why I’m amazed I have any readers at all, but I still get comments here and there which I love to receive.  So for those of you who do still read along, many thanks for following and sharing in my passion.

1973 Topps–Strickland, Champion, Torrez, Rader

I’m collecting the 1973 set, slowly but surely. This post is the latest in my quest for the completion.

73topps-jimstrickland122

  • Card Facts – Jim Strickland – Minnesota Twins – Card #122
  • Purchase Price – $.11 (Ebay lot 40/$4.25)

  • Purchase Price – free (Trade with “Crinkly Wrappers”)

73topps-miketorrez77

  • Card Facts – Mike Torrez – Montreal Expos – Card #77
  • Purchase Price – free (Trade with “Crinkly Wrappers”)

The lack of color in the background of most of these shots just reminds me of childhood photos.

73topps-dougrader76

  • Card Facts – Doug Rader – Houston Astros – Card #76
  • Purchase Price – free (Trade with “Crinkly Wrappers”)

  • Cards posted in this set – 61
  • Total price paid – $7.09
  • Average price per card – $0.12
  • Cards left to post – 623 (including NNO Checklists)
  • Percentage posted – 61/684 (9% posted)
  • Percentage completed – 106/684 (15% completed)

I’m seeing this set being a long term goal, unlike the 1981 Topps which I seem to be breezing through.  That’s ok though.  Ted was a huge help with what I do have, otherwise, I’d probably be done posting 1973 cards till I bought more.  I have a bunch of bids on some lots ending later in this week.  The bids aren’t very high but hopefully I’ll win at least a few.

1981 Topps–Robinson, Yastrzemski, Lopes, Soderholm

81topps-carlyastrzemski110

    • Card Facts – Carl Yastrzemski – Boston Red Sox  – Card #110
    • Purchase Price – free (Trade with “Manupatches & Mustaches”)

Yastrzemski. Yastrzemski. Yastrzemski.  You all know who he is.  I know who he is.  I collected him as a kid and taught myself how to spell his last name when I was a kid, and still remember how to this day.  Although, now that I’ve typed it 3 times, I notice that the Windows Live Writer isn’t underlining it as a misspelled word.  Even Windows knows who Carl Yastrzemski is.  That’s how bad he was.

81topps-davelopes50

  • Card Facts – Dave Lopes – Los Angeles Dodgers – Card #50
  • Purchase Price – free (Trade with “JABO’s”)

With this card alone, I will probably set a record for most viewed 1981 post.  Between all the Lopes fans and Dodgers fans should set that record.

81topps-ericsoderholm383

  • Card Facts – Eric Soderholm – New York Yankees – Card #383
  • Purchase Price – $.05 (Ebay lot 100/$4.99)

A Yankee.  Blah!

  • Cards left to post – 660
  • Percentage posted – 66/726 (9% posted)
  • Percentage completed – 494/726 (68% completed)

3 more freebies in this set.  I should complete this set pretty cheaply with all the awesome traders out there.  Thanks guys!
