Welcome

This blog is about sports cards. I tend to only purchase cheap items so don't come hear expecting to see big money cards. My teams collections are Chicago White Sox and Michigan Wolverines. I also have a bunch of player collections.

Box Break–Community Gum

Community Gum had another great box break.  He kept the Frank Thomas cards for himself but that was cool because I had a crap load of them anyways. It was an all Upper Deck box break so let’s get to the loot.

boxbreak-udelements07communitygum

A couple of Jim Thome’s from 2007 UD Elements.  The one on the right is sort of see through which you can’t really see in the scan.

boxbreak-udfirstpitch06communitygum

6 new 2006 UD First Pitch.  I like the Mark Buehrle, but that’s more because I like Mark Buehrle.

boxbreak-udvictory03communitygum

Some 2003 UD Victory.  3 Paul Konerko’s.  I showed the duplicate’s because one will go in the White Sox Collection and the bottom 2 will go in the Paul Konerko Collection.  I received all great players from that set.

boxbreak-ud40man02communitygum

2002 UD 40 man.  A couple of Kenny Lofton’s and a couple of rookies.  Jon Rauch was supposed to be one of our top pitchers but never quite got there.

boxbreak-udretro99communitygum

And some 1999 UD Retro.  I’m not sure if Community Gum already had that Frank Thomas or it slipped through his fingers.  Either or, he must have felt bad for taking the others because he also sent me these that are new to the White Sox Collection.

boxbreak-frankthomas-communitygum

I could have sworn I had the Gypsy Queen but it was still on my list.  I thought I had the team set.  I’ll know for sure when I eventually get around to putting them away.

Thanks for the break and for the bonus Thomas’.  Be sure to check out “Community Gum” for box breaks and much more.

Box Break–Toddfather

First off, a big shout out to “DocHoloday” for helping with the stupid Malware issue, it is now fixed (I think).  I’ll still keep the Wordpress site for now, just to make sure.  If I get enough attention over there, I may keep it anyways.  Thanks for taking the time Matt, it was greatly appreciated.  Now, on to the post.

Tim over at “Home of the Toddfather” had a box break that hooked me up with some more 2012 cards.  Which I needed being as I haven’t bought a pack this year.  I say that a lot, because I’m pretty proud of it.

boxbreak-toddfather01

Some Update as well as some Pro Debut.  I got excited to show my wife the Bristol Sox cards since she lived in Bristol for 20 years and when I visited her, we went to a game.  All of these are new to the White Sox Collection.

boxbreak-toddfather02

Some new inserts and a Topps Chrome of Adam Dunn.  I dig the Carlton Fisk but then again, I like the uniforms.

boxbreak-toddfather03

And of course, a couple for the Paul Konerko Collection.  This break was right up my alley since I didn’t have much in 2012 cards.  Anything I do have, I have from trades or other box breaks.

Thanks Tim, I for one, enjoyed your first ever box break.  Be sure to check out “Home of the Toddfather” and show Tim some love.

P.S.  I got the Chicago Cubs for my son as well, but nobody really wants to see those.

Box Break–My Cardboard Mistress

boxbreak-mycardboardmistress04

One thing I love about Spankee, is his blog title.  “My Cardboard Mistress” is so true, probably for most of us and I’m jealous that he came up with it first.  But on to the cards.

boxbreak-mycardboardmistress01

All of these were new to the White Sox Collection.  Being as I haven’t opened a pack of 2012 cards yet, I definitely appreciated the Chris Sale bowman.  The Jim Thome card on top is numbered to 699.  Really like the Addison Reed purple refractor and the Upper Deck Spectrum’s at the bottom.

boxbreak-mycardboardmistress03

Spankee even managed to hit a couple of player collections with the above Heritage Luis Aparicio for the Luis Aparicio Collection.

boxbreak-mycardboardmistress05

Also come Paul Konerko’s that I didn’t have including a 2003 Topps Gold.  Both cards are new to the Paul Konerko Collection.

boxbreak-mycardboardmistress02

And what ends up making it a great break is when you manage a hit, I actually got 2.  I said above how much I like the Spectrum cards and a jersey card of Jim Thome with a pinstripe peaking out is pretty great.  And I really loved the Tadahito Iguchi autographed card.  I believe this was my first hit, let alone autograph of his.  He was an integral part of the 2005 World Championship team.

Great break from “My Cardboard Mistress”, thanks Spankee.

Box Break from Colby

Cardboard Collections” had one of his affordable box breaks a little while back.  I got in on it because the boxes he was breaking, I had very little to none of any of them.  It was an all Donruss box break.  He broke into 1986 Leaf, 2002 Donruss, and 2002 Donruss Best of Fan Club,  I may have had some 2002 Donruss but I was pretty sure I didn’t have anything else.  I also got the White Sox for $7, which is where the affordable comes in.  Let’s see what I got.

boxbreak-cbcollections01

Nothing overly exciting but all of the above cards went into my White Sox collection.  I had none of them.  The Jose Canseco on the left was numbered but I don’t remember to what.  Nothing real high.  He also threw in a few Sox cards that weren’t part of the break.  The Turkey Red in the back of the 86 Leaf’s in an Alexei Ramirez which I didn’t have as well.

boxbreak-cbcollections02

The 3 above went into the player collections.  I thought I had the Konerko 2002 Donruss but apparently not.  I got duplicates of the Tom Seaver which is why you see it in both pictures above.  So it went to the White Sox collection as well as the Tom Seaver collection.  The Luis Aparicio was another throw in from Colby that I didn’t have.

Definitely can’t complain about all that for $7.  Be sure to check out Colby’s blog for more of his affordable box breaks at “Cardboard Collections”.

Box Break loot from Kyle

Kyle over at “JABO’s” held a box break for 2012 Topps Archives.  I was really looking forward to getting in on it because of the product.  My lesson learned was always check and see what possible cards your team might have.  I kept reading everybody’s posts about Archives and glancing through the cards, looking for some awesome White Sox cards, but hardly saw any.  So I waited until I got my loot from Kyle’s box break.

boxbreak-jabo01

Out of a whole box, this was all I got.  That sucks.  I didn’t even get duplicates of the Konerko to put towards each collection.  Sure, I got dupes of Danks but I only needed 1 of those.  After this, I went and looked at the checklist for Archives.  Wouldn’t you know it, I got all the base cards.  2 freaking cards.  3 including the dupe.  I can’t remember if I’ve even seen any inserts of White Sox players.  I want to say maybe 1 or 2.  There are cards I need for my player collections that weren’t Sox cards but (Luis Aparicio and Tom Seaver).  So needless to say, I wasn’t too thrilled with the Archives release.

But it all turned to be worth the break.  Because I did land this.

boxbreak-jabo02

Ron Kittle, sweet.  1984 Topps, sweet.  This made the break completely worthwhile.

Although I’m still pissed at the lack of Sox cards in Archives, that wasn’t Kyle’s fault, it was Topps fault.  Plus Kyle does his box breaks by cost in accordance to possible hits.  So I didn’t pay a huge amount for the Sox anyways.  Be sure to check out “JABO’s” for all kinds of card related stuff including more box breaks.

note-I already got the other Konerko I need from Dennis so no need to send it to me.  I know how generous a lot of you are and that’s the only reason for the note.

Box Break cards

I’ve been jumping in on some Box Breaks, quite a few of them over at “JABO’s”.  I like Kyle’s box breaks because he costs adjusts in accordance to the team and since the White Sox get no love, I can get them cheap.  First up is 2012 Gypsy Queen’s

boxbreak-jabo

I like Gypsy Queen but I think I just like the sets that mix today’s stars with vintage stars.  I’m not overly huge on how cards themselves look.  Sure I have favorites and ones I don’t like, but the look doesn’t stop me from buying it.  John Danks, Frank Thomas, Luis Aparicio and Paul Konerko.  All going to the White Sox collection.  What?  But your supposed to fill your player collections first and you have a Luis Aparicio and a Paul Konerko?

boxbreak-jabo02

That’s right, the only 2 dupes I got and I needed them both.  Thanks Kyle!

I think the rest of these were all in the same break but I’m not positive.  Kyle tends to throw bonus cards in as well so some of those may be mixed in there.

boxbreak-jabo03

2003 Bazooka’s – I didn’t have anything from this set so everything Kyle sent me, I needed.

boxbreak-jabo04

2003 Fleer Flair – I’m surprised I didn’t have the Frank Thomas, I have a crap load of his cards.  Joe Borchard was one of the “Next Big Things” that never panned out.

2008 Upper Deck SP Authentic – I did have some of these but I didn’t have the card above.

boxbreak-jabo05

2005 Topps Chrome – Again, I didn’t have anything from this set so everything went to my collection.

I see Kyle did box breaks of these but I don’t think I was in on them so I’m going to guess that these were extra’s he sent me.  He’s cool like that.

boxbreak-jabo06

2001 Topps Stadium Club – There is some great photography in this set judging by these 6 Sox cards.

boxbreak-jabo07

1995 Dimesion III – These are just cool.  Love the Frank Thomas card.

Be sure to check out JABO’s for all your box break needs, and he’s a great trader as well.  Check him out, he’s always got something going on.  That man is non-stop baseball cards.

I have a Topps Archive break from Kyle to, but I haven’t scanned it yet.

Free Box Break Goodies

Community Gum” held a free box break awhile back.  With me always being behind on my blog reading I’m amazed that I was able to get in on it.  Obviously I took the White Sox.  Here’s my loot from their 2003 Leaf box.

boxbreak-communitygum01

All 3 All-Stars, all had huge years with the White Sox.  And all are new to my White Sox collection.

boxbreak-communitygum02

2 different Frank Thomas Passing Through Time.  One is a Press Proof.  I thought I had scanned the back of them but I couldn’t find the scan.  Or I forgot to scan the back, either way, you don’t get to see them.  On the back of both of these is what I’m guessing is a preview for the 2004 Studio set.  I had never seen these Leaf cards with a preview on the back.  Both of these are obviously new to the White Sox collection.

boxbreak-communitygum03

And what makes good on a White Sox box break, additional cards for the player collections.  I always hope to get 2 Konerko’s but I only got one in this break.  So I still need one of these for the White Sox collection since I fill player collections first.

Big thanks to “Community Gum” for the FREE box break.  I was always late getting in their other ones.  So make sure you bookmark them and check them daily.

Box Break from Kyle

Kyle over at “JABO’s” held a box break.  My main reason for joining was for the 2012 Heritage, but I didn’t have much of the other boxes he was breaking either which made it even better.  First, I’ll show off the few extra cards Kyle was nice enough to throw in.

boxbreak03

This is my 3rd die cut from the Upper Deck X, when I pulled it out I thought it was a dupe, but I didn’t have the Dye one.  I knew I didn’t have the Shoe Box Collection because I have never seen or heard of that set.  So it was really cool that Kyle threw in the next one.

boxbreak05

A Little Luis for the Aparicio collection.  I love vintage and vintage reprints so I love this card.

But you’re here for the box break so I’ll get to those.  First up, the 2007 Upper Deck SP.

boxbreak01

Thome and Konerko.  I already had the Konerko in the player collection so this one goes into the White Sox Collection.

Next up, the 2004 Fleer Platinum.

boxbreak02

Didn’t get too much out that box, just these 3 and lots of dupes.  I think I got 3 Crede’s and a second Loaiza.

boxbreak04

Next up, 2011 Bowman Platinum.  I got these 4, Beckham and Sale base, Beckham red and Morel green.  I like this set, maybe just because it’s shiny.  I like the parallels too, except for the fact that I have more to collect.  I also got an Adam Dunn base but I already had one of those.

And the main reason I got in the break, 2012 Heritage.

boxbreak06

I love these cards.  Obviously because they look vintage.  But I like the card stock it’s on.  A little thicker than usual.  I also like the team cards.  I didn’t get any inserts but then again, I don’t know if the Sox even have any.  I know there is a Luis Aparicio Then and Now that I need for the player collection but he’s with the Orioles on it.

Last but not least, one for the player collection.

boxbreak07

Thanks Kyle, love your breaks.  Be sure to check his blog out.  He’s constantly doing breaks and drafts and all kinds of goodness.  “Juuust a Bit Outside

Have you seen the 2012’s yet?

I got my 2012 cards from Kyle over at “JABO’s” who held a box break.  I also had the Cubs and Tigers but I set those aside for trades so I won’t bother showing those.  You might have seen some 2012’s, I think there has been a post or 2 out there in blog-o-land.  But I will show the White Sox portion of the break because it’s my blog and I want too.  And yes, I’m going to show every Sox card (minus duplicates).

boxbreak03

These are the base cards.  I do believe it’s a whole team set.  Last time I looked, www.teamsets4u.com didn’t have them listed yet, but I’ve seen team sets listed on ebay at 11 cards, so there is my brilliant detective work.

boxbreak02

Here’s the inserts and parallel’s.  Love the Aparicio, I’m really close to pulling the trigger on starting a player collection of him.  After researching him for my Today’s 9 series, I’ve really gotten into him as a player and his cards.

boxbreak01

And 2 cards for my current player collections.  Luckily I got 2 Konerko’s so I was able to fill both.  Only 1 of the Seaver so I need another one for my team collection as I always fill my player collections first.  I’ve been watching some of the relic cards on ebay, they aren’t real high dollar but higher than I’m willing to pay.  I can wait them out till they drop.  I’d really like the Aparicio with the ring, and I know there is another Gold Standard Seaver in his Reds uniform and a Frank Thomas in that same set that I need to get.  I haven’t investigated enough to know what all Sox cards are out there from this set.

Thanks for the break Kyle, I look forward to the next one, which I’m already signed up for.

Box Break from the Dimwit

Don’t the name fool you, Sam knows what he’s doing over at the “the Daily Dimwit”,  He held a box break of some nice sets.  You got 2 teams, you picked one and one was randomed.  My randomed team was the A’s.

boxbreak-dimwit04

A Frank Thomas card, too bad it’s with the A’s.  The Manny Ramirez/Matt Holiday card on the bottom right is numbered.  I assume the cards that weren’t with a specific team got randomed, that’s where the Michael Beasley comes in.  As well as these 2 cards.

boxbreak-dimwit03

I would have posted that MLK card on Monday had I realized I had it.  All the above are available if you are interested.

boxbreak-dimwit01

I haven’t checked to see which of these cards I have yet but I only recognized a few.  The Thome SP Authentic is numbered so it’ll go to the Sox collection whether I already have it or not.

boxbreak-dimwit02

I like thse cards and it was one of the reasons I joined this break.  I really like the Konerko card at the bottom.  I love the design, and it’s numbered.

So a great box break, thanks Sam, for hosting and running it.  I enjoyed it and I look forward to others.  Be sure to check him out at “the Daily Dimwit”.

Box break results

I had planned on spending the weekend scanning and getting more posts ready for the 1973 and 1981 set.  Since I posted neither today, you can see, I didn’t get done what I wanted too.  I spent most of yesterday copying over from teamsets4u.com to a want list for my Sox collection.  I figured I’d start with every card they have, so needless to say, I haven’t gotten very far in the amount of time I was working on it.  To many different backs on the T206’s, took me forever to get those logged in.  I’ll try to do better this week on getting other posts out.  I have so many different things I need to work on and I just jump back and forth between all of them.  That doesn’t help me complete anything.

Here’s my results from JABO’s box break.  I received these along with some trade cards and a huge stack of 1981’s.  He was very generous.  I had the White Sox (obviously) and then selected Phillies for my 2nd team and was given the A’s for my 3rd team.  And if you know me, the Phillies and A’s are available for trade.  He broke a Finest and a Lineage box.

boxbreak-jabo01

You’ll see 2 Cliff Lee’s in there.  One is the Venezuelan insert and one is the base.  Gotta love the Mike Schmidt though.

boxbreak-jabo02

And here’s the rest of the Phillies,  A couple of great players in sparkly in the Lineage with Halladay and Schmidt.  The Brown on the right is #’d /299.  I took the Phillies because #1, they are easy to trade and #2, there are a lot of stars, as shown above.

boxbreak-jabo03

I didn’t do as well with the A’s, not even a modern star in the bunch.  The vintage Foxx is always nice because that’s the reason I like Lineage, is the mix of vintage and modern stars.  All of the above cards (A’s and Phillies) are all available.

boxbreak-jabo04

These are the Sox cards I got for my collection.  I already had a bunch of Lineage from trades and packs I purchased earlier in the year so I wasn’t expecting much but I did get a couple that I didn’t have.  If you had asked me if I had the Chris Sale, I would have said yes, so it’s a good thing you didn’t ask.  And you can never go wrong with one of the best hitter’s to ever wear a Sox uniform.  That’s Frank Thomas, not the Adam Dunn card.  I didn’t have any Finest so those are all new to me.  Too bad Sergio is gone now though, I liked him.

If you haven’t found Kyle’s blog yet, be sure to check it out.  He does quite a bit of stuff for everyone to get involved.  So check out “JABO’s”.

Group Break

break-spankee05

Spankee from “My Cardboard Mistress” held an awesome group break.  He broke all kinds of boxes and being as my collection is fairly new, most of the cards were new to me as well.

break-spankee01

This is just a small selection of the cards.  I think the majority of the Konerko’s were new to that collection as well.

break-spankee02

As you can tell, he broke new with the old.  Love the Fisk Kimball and those 3 stickers are the first I have gotten.  I can not find any around here at all.  Although, I tend to only shop at Walmart.  I just don’t go anywhere else that has cards.  I don’t shop at Meijer or Target, and I don’t ever even go to Walmart just for cards, I pick them up while I’m there for something else.  But I was excited when I saw he broke some stickers and was hoping to get some.

break-spankee03

And a few horizontal cards.  All Konerko’s for the Konerko collection.  And of course, the reason you get into breaks.  Hits!

break-spankee04

I scored a jersey of Konerko.  SWEET!  And with a stripe.

Thanks Spankee for the great group break.  I’m glad you sent me my cards before my Wolverines met your Hokies, otherwise you might be mad at me after the game.
