Welcome

This blog is about sports cards. I tend to only purchase cheap items so don't come hear expecting to see big money cards. My teams collections are Chicago White Sox and Michigan Wolverines. I also have a bunch of player collections.

Oldies but goodies

Has anybody noticed these at Dairy Queen.

My son works there and he sent a pic of one and I said bring me one home. He brought all 3 home because they all say something different. Now that I have them home, I'm not really sure what I'm going to do with them. They've actually just been sitting on my desk for a couple of weeks now. I may decide to just throw them away. I don't know.

A little different of a post today. Usually you get a player collection or a team collection. Today, you get one of my favorites, even though I don't pick them up as much. There's a guy that sets up at the show we are setting up at this weekend that is all these and I'm thinking about throwing some cash his way.

We'll start off with some cheap pick-ups.

I picked up this 1982 Donruss, I usually look for this set when I'm picking up extras on Sportlots because I'm slowly getting closer to completing it. It is my 529th card which is good for 80% complete. It might be time to hit the baseballcardstore.ca to see if I can't grab some more to finish it.

I also picked up a couple from the 1981 Fleer set. A couple pretty good pitchers back in the day at that. This set is right behind the 1982 Donruss with 523 cards.

Next up, we have the good old black border 1971 Topps. One of my favorites from the 70's. This is my 120th card from that set.

It's always a bonus when I can find 60's cards for under a quarter. I picked up this 1967 which gives me 44 cards from that set. I'm pretty sure half of those are White Sox cards. I looked, 17 of them are Sox so not quite half.

I even grabbed a couple from 1960. These 2 give me 72 cards. I'm sure most are Sox cards again (29 Sox cards) so again, almost half.

Not only was I able to grab some 60's, I also managed a few from 1959. I really love finding these cheap, These 3 cards give me 21 cards for that set.

All of the above were from Sportlots that I grabbed to take advantage of the shipping on a couple of sellers when picking up some player collections.

This 1977 Willie Stargell, I picked up at the LCS. It was in the dollar box and I said why not.

I picked up these 2 in Shipshewana in the dollar boxes. If I had to guess, I would say from Hollister because I believe he was the only one I spent money with at that last show. A couple of really good players. The Rose and Stargell up there give me 273 cards from the 1977 Topps set.

I picked these up from Hollister when I ran into him at the LCS. They were in his half off box, they were marked $4 which meant they were $2 but we got a discount for buying a bunch so I paid less than $2 each. I don't think that's too much for the Hall of Fame brothers. (Kidding, I know they aren't). The 1970 on the right gives me 96 cards from that set.

This was also a half off purchase of $2. I wouldn't have spent that much but I was already dropping a bunch, what was $2 more for a Vintage White Sox card. This card gives me 40 for the 1966 set.

This was my favorite of the vintage pick-ups. A 1972 Hank Aaron. Sure, it's not his single but I loved these as a kid because I got great players on 1 card and they were cheaper than the singles. This was also a half off card from Hollister that I grabbed for $2. This and the Brooks Robinson up there give me 82 cards from that set.

So close to 200

Sluggo and I went to a trade night last night before the card show today in Shipshewana. This is getting to be a pretty huge show, I believe it was advertised as 180+ tables and it definitely has the foot traffic. We've been on a waiting list to get tables for awhile now and are still waiting. Anyways, I spent $42 last night on a half price box and I only picked up 8 cards. Then today, I spent $40 on a dollar box but I got 51 cards for that price. I also picked up a couple of autos for another $10. Plus, I got a player lot as a throw in that I ended up needing 3 cards so it was a pretty good day. I also bought a MacFarland figure of a hall of famer for $10.

We also hit the LCS on the way home. I didn't spend any money but I came home with another 10 or so cards. I spent too much at the card show so I just shuffled through a couple of dime boxes while my cousin was shopping. He spent enough money that the guy just through the dime cards in for free.

I started logging them today, but didn't get them done. I'll finish them tomorrow and scan them so I can start posting. Don't worry thought, I still have a few other things to show until then.

I have 9 posts left before I enter the ones I just purchased and out of those 9, only 1 of them I didn't pick cards up for this past weekend so I'll post that today so I don't have to post any players twice so close together.

Those top 3 all go to the vintage collection as well. The middle 3 are all the canadian versions. The 1987 Fleer is the glossy version.

I also picked up some 80's oddballs. The Donruss is one of those oversized cards, I believe it's 3x5 or close to it. The right side is a Fleer sticker and a Fun Food pin.

These are the 90's cards I picked up of the Lefty.

2000's & 2001's. I always loved those club 3,000 cards.

2002's & 2003's. It's always odd to see Carlton in a Cardinals jersey, that was definitely before my kid collecting days.

All 2004's. I like the look of that Leather & Lumber card on the bottom right.

2005-2009. I really like the bottom right again, I wish they would have found something to put on the right side of base cards. Maybe even a facsimile signature or something. I like the relic cards more because they use that open space for the relic.

2010-2014. I wish those top 2 corner cards were the vintage versions. Certainly not a fan of the Goodwin Champions sets where they show them in everyday clothes. They're just weird.

I like the black border on the top left and the bottom center with the red background with the powder blue uniforms. You see another 1967 copy in there as well.

2019-2021. Oh look, another 1967 copy.

These 55 cards give me 197 cards of the lefty. I guess I should have picked up 3 more of him this weekend to get me to 200. I should of made it 3 White Sox cards since I didn't get any up there.

Card Show Lots

Well, Michigan lost after the offense decided to not show up and the White Sox lost their opener essentially on an error. Not a great way to start the season, but we do tend to struggle on the west coast. I know it's only the first game in a long season but to be honest, I'm just happy regular baseball is back.

I need to remember next time, not to let my Sportlots package get so huge because it takes forever to log and scan them. I got them logged finally after a few hours during the week and most of today. Tomorrow I will be scanning but I have to help my brother move some stuff so hopefully that won't take too long.

Today's random came up with something we don't see too often anymore but I ran into some at the card show. A guy had small lots of Vintage together, really cheap because they weren't in the best conditions. I picked up a few because of the types of cards they were or the amount there was.

I paid $1 for this lot and it actually had 5 cards. The other 2 will be in another post as they go to another collection as well. Still, $.20 a piece, who can pass that up. These 3 (and the other 2) put that set at 242 cards.

I paid $.50 for this lot of 3, these are a little more battered than the 1977's but I figured worse comes to worse, I'll replace them if I actually get close to finishing the set. These 3 put that set at 353 cards so at least I'm a little over half on that one.

These 13 cards came in 2 lots but they were only $.50 each which you can see why, some of them are pretty beat up. There were other cards with these 2 lots but I already had them, they were Sox cards because even with these 13, I only have 99 cards from this set and almost 1/3 of them are Sox cards as I'm only 1 card short of the team set.

I paid $1 for this lot. Yeah, I know there's only 1 card. The lot was 5 cards and they were all leaders cards from 1971 but this and one other were the only 2 that I needed. The other one had a player collection so you'll see that when I do his post. You know those leaders cards have some great names on them though. I even gave two of the dupes to Fred at work because they had Cubs players on them. The 2 I needed give me 112 cards for that set.

Sox are up so far, let's hope they keep it tonight. I'm out!

Random 60's Vintage

* I put my April incoming on random for today's post.

You already saw the Vintage post from the 50's, today's random puts us a decade later.

I'll start with the lone 1969. This is my 48th card of that set. I have a few of these leader cards, they are generally much cheaper for some big names.

Two pretty good names for the 1968 set. The 2nd Bob Gibson of this post already. So far no Yankees either unlike the 50's post. These 2 cards make 40 on the 1968 set.

My lone 1966 card and it's a Mickey Mantle, sorta. I certainly don't mind checklist, especially when they are part of the set. I prefer the ones like these that do have something to collect on them as well. This is the 34th card in my collection of this set.

Also one card from 1965 and another leader card where you get 3 pretty good players. This is only my 25th card from the mid 60's set.

We had a couple of Yankees up there but like the 50's post, there's a bunch more coming. This 1963 gives me 14 cards, a long way to go.

With 1 less card at 13, this original wood board card, and another Yankee. A rookie at that.

And 2 more Yankees but those are some big name Yankees, and being vintage instead of the millions of reprints just make it cooler. These 2 1961's give me 20 for the set.

Another White Ford and even older, I'll take it. This Whitey Ford gives me 42 cards from 1960. I remember buying a bunch of White Sox from 1960 which is why I have more from that set than the others. Out of those 42, 27 are from the White Sox.

All of the above cards came from Sluggo, who should be on his way to Indiana as we speak, with another box of cards.
