Welcome

This blog is about sports cards. I tend to only purchase cheap items so don't come hear expecting to see big money cards. My teams collections are Chicago White Sox and Michigan Wolverines. I also have a bunch of player collections.

New show in the area

I hit a local card show that just started. There was a show in the neighboring town but they ended up pushing out the sports cards dealers and it's now a Pokemon, Toys, Comics, Ect show. Which is great for those people who collect that stuff because it's a huge show for them but it does nothing for me. So a guy who ran a fairly big one a couple of times a year, started a new one that is sports cards only. The LCS I sort for was going to be there so I hit it up. They weren't allowing customers in early but I snuck in under his name. I sat and chatted awhile, said hi to a bunch of dealers and customers that I knew from when we set up then hit out and shopped. I was pretty much just looking for Michigan peeps as the Sox are kind of crappy right now so I'm just not feeling it for them.

I did a pretty good job as there was only 1 card that I bought that I already have. The sad thing is Dennis does too and I'm pretty sure I sent it to him so it'll go in John's box. I hate to keep checking TCDB for everything I buy so I guess. I pretty much hit $1 boxes (I paid less than $1) and looked at some stuff on the tables. I ended up buying from 3 different dealers.

Let's get to it. We'll start with the basketball pickups.

I picked up these 3 of Bufkin in the dollar boxes. I actually have a decent sized collection of him considering he's mostly been a G League player. These 3 give me 28 cards of him.

I picked up this Hardaway jr and Robinson in the same boxes. The Topps Chrome Cosmo is unlicensed but is a cool looking card and is numbered to /149. It gives me 127 cards of Tim jr.

The Prizm of Duncan is the White parallel which is numbered to /175 and is my 51st of him.

I'll start the football with the non PC (yet) players. You'll see a couple of these Gold Ice, I paid a little more for those but they are just a cool colored card on Michigan cards. That is my 4th card of Underwood but definitely the coolest looking one. It's also my 4th card of Keene who is no longer with the program.

I'll do the PC guys in alphabetical order like a did basketball.

I grabbed this Disco parallel of Barner for my 6th card of him.

3 more of Nico who had a good year until he got hurt in the Playoffs. These 3 give me 103.

I managed to find another Corum as well. It's shiny but it's a regular insert. This is my 47th card of Blake.

1 more of Colson who I've been steadily picking up recently. This Silver gives me 10 now.

Donovan has bounced between a couple of practice squads, it would be nice if he could land somewhere where he could get some playing time but I don't think that will happen. This is my 17th card of him.

I now have 6 cards of Mason but these are the 1st 2 in pro uniforms. Michigan uniforms look better.

Also my first pro uniform Grant out of 5 cards but it's a very colorful one at that.

This disco parallel gets me up to double digits of Kris at 10 cards.

These Will Johnson cards are boosting his PC, I've already matched cards this year purchased with the same amount that I purchased last year. These 2 give me 11 cards, all in Michigan uniforms.

This guy was making a name for himself towards the end of the year and in the playoffs so I'm sure he'll have plenty more cards coming. These 3 double the PC to 6 cards. I bought the Prizm from the same guy I bought the gold ice cards so I paid a little more for it.

3 more for the JJ PC. Really hoping he stays healthy next year. These 3 put me at 41 cards for the Ohio killer.

A couple of colored parallels. The gold one is a Portrait Studio which are numbered to /100. Also shows is the Blue Hyper. These 2 give me 19 cards of Mazi.

2 more colored parallels for Wilson which give me 37 cards.

There's the other gold ice card I mentioned. Finishing off the cheaper purchases with a legend. This card gives me 102 of Woodson.

The last stop I made was at a dealer that I'm very familiar with. He's a Michigan guy so we talk Michigan all the time when we were setting up and he always gives me great deals. I went up to his table and stood at the showcase where I had eyeballed a couple of autos I was thinking about. He asked what I was looking at it, I told him these 3 autos but I don't think I have enough on me for all 3. He said we'll see what we can do. They totaled $100 on his price tag so I figured I'd be putting one back as I had already spent $48 and only went to the show with a crisp $100 bill. He said, how about $50, I went perfect, that's pretty much what I have.

My first autos of all 3 and all 3 are in Michigan uniforms. The top 2 are Refractors so all 3 are numbered to /499. I've been trying to get some autos of all my PC's, this purchased definitely helped.

It was easier to drop $98 at a show when I won a speaker at a raffle at work that I sold to another guy for $200 at Christmas. I don't think the wife was extremely happy with it but she won't say anything about it because she knows I don't drop money on cards a lot like I was when I was doing shows.

That catches me up on incoming stuff that I had already saved but I got one more post until I'm fully caught up as Fred from work gave me a few more cards. I'm going to get them scanned and logged today so I'll have that post ready. I typed all the previous last week which I think is going to be my process, type out the posts on the weekend and post throughout the week. Most weeks I don't get anything so it won't be like it has been this week.

Cards from Carolina

You all may remember Sluggo who I used to set up with at shows. He moved back to North Carolina but we still trade via the mail (although I've been slacking at getting his package out). He sent me a bunch of cards for my PC's last week.

Let's get started.

As you can see, I keep getting a ton of Robert cards from everybody. That tends to happen when he gets a ton printed in every set. Kevin knows I tend to have most of the base so he always pulls shiny and insert cards for me.

I'm closing in on 50 cards of Colson Montgomery who I have high hopes for (if we don't trade him). I had hopes for Colas as well but he's gone now.

4 more shiny Sheets, all of the Sox variety which is all the better.

The top 3 are all base Chrome, the Darboh is the Green (#'d to /150) and the red Lazer of Ojabo. All 5 of these players are PC except for Swords but that's only a technicality because she's still playing for Michigan. I'm sure I'll end up PCing her as well.

Roman Wilson is probably the least popular of the next 3 but I keep getting a ton of his cards. These 3 give me 37.

Blake is the second most popular and with these 9, I'm up to 47 of him.

The most popular is JJ, now if he could stay healthy long enough to showcase what he can do. Sooner or later, Minnesota is going to give up and go another route and I want him to succeed. Him and Corum were my favorites of that 2023 Championship team and they are both really good humans. These 2 give me 41 of JJ.

Kevin even managed to hit a couple of my Tier 1 collections that I don't add to a whole lot. I only added 4 of each player last year. The Refractor Konerko puts his PC at 801 cards and the Prism parallel of Aparcio puts him at 148.

He's already started my next box as he's been picking up a couple of collections and is busy sorting them to start doing shows down there. I'm sure he won't do as well as up here because he won't have my pretty face and sparkling personality with him but he's going to take a shot. (Yes, that was sarcastic).

4 Auto Friday

Once again, all my mail for the week came in one day. I've only had one day all week where I got cards in the mail and than today, I get hit with 6 envelopes today, with 9 cards but only 7 that are staying in my collections.

This is where one of those "extra" cards comes into play. I picked up this 1994 Triple Play for $.54/shipped. I checked the listing again and it was for 1 card even though he sent me a dupe of it. It is my 47th card of the Rock.

I picked up this duo collection card, it goes to the player and the vintage collection. I'm pretty familiar with the 1981 Donruss set and I don't remember ever seeing this card when I was a kid, I'm not sure I've seen it up until a year or so ago. I picked it up for only $.30/shipped and it's my 108th card of the lefty.

I picked up this Yastrzemski card and I was thinking it was my first series 2 card but than I remembered I picked up some Sox cards a few weeks ago. It is however, a player collection that I only added 1 card to last year but this is the 5th card this year. It is also my 59th card of Yaz.

Now to the autograph portion. I picked up this auto of Gavin Floyd for $1.59/shipped. It's a pretty nice card as most of the Masterpieces are. It is my 33rd card of Gavin and my 1st auto of his for the White Sox collection.

I picked this card up in a 2 card lot with a Nebraska player autograph which doesn't go to my collection and this Will Johnson auto is technically a dupe but I'll keep in anyways since it's an auto (unless Dennis needs it). I grabbed the lot of 2 cards for $2.69/shipped.

I also picked up this Adrian Arrington auto for $2.69/shipped. I thought I had a version of this one but I didn't. This is my 13th card and my 8th autograph of Arrington.

I also started a new player collection with this Zak Irvin autograph. I'm sure this collection won't take off as he probably doesn't have to many cards. I checked, he only has 13 cards and they are all from this set. I picked this one up for $1.35/shipped.

Saturday spring haul

I had no envelopes today so like I promised, I'm going to show some cards that Dennis from "Too Many Verlanders" and "Too Many Manninghams" gave me when we got together at the Michigan spring game this past Saturday. He gave me a healthy stack of cards that I didn't have from player collections to team collections.

The first 2 player collections we both collect so I'm sure these are all dupes for him.

These 6 Ripken cards were all new to me and put that collection at 321 cards. I actually thought I had a couple of them but according to my records (which is always accurate, yeah right!) I don't.

We also both collect Barry Larkin as he is a former Wolverine that we both like. These 5 cards put that collection at 120 cards. I always liked the ESPN cards at the bottom, you would think they would have more subsets or inserts that had to do with ESPN but then again, it would probably be all Yankees and Red Sox players.

These 3 Johnny Bench stickers put that collection at 68 cards. I love these stickers because I used to buy and stick these in the Topps albums that you can buy when I was a kid.

These were great additions because I don't get to add to many to the Billy Williams collection. I assumed there would at least be 1 Billy Williams in the 100 years of Wrigley set but I hadn't actually seen one yet. They are nice cards, I like the sign with the ivy, I'd like it more if I was a Cubs fan but I could see a fan really loving that set. These 2 cards put that collection at 64 cards.

Dennis also hit my Gary Carter collection with this Tribute card. I don't get to see to many of those considering everything I buy is a quarter or less. This Carter puts that collection at 102 cards.

Dennis even managed to hit my biggest player collection with this Paul Konerko. I knew I had this but I generally keep dupes of serial numbered cards since technically, they are different. I went to log it into the Konerko have list and realized the one I already had was numbered to /999 and this one is to /99 so it's definitely a different version of the card. This Konerko puts that collection at 414 cards.

He even managed to hit the White Sox collection with this autograph of Bobby Howry. I remember him being a decent reliever back in the days before our last World Series.

The 2nd autograph that he sent me was a Michigan auto of Will Johnson. This card is from 2009 and is my first auto of Will.

These 4 cards are all starter to each player collection. I don't know that De'Veon will have to many cards in the pros. Taco Charlton should as he was a very good DE but we'll see if he sticks somewhere, plus, you know defensive players don't get to many cards to begin with. I fully expect Jake Butt to have some pro cards so this 2 card head start on his career is a nice step.

As always, a big thank you to Dennis for the cards and for the great seats on Saturday.
