Tom Seaver Collection

I’m always very happy to get some cards of Tom Seaver for under half a buck.  Most of his cards start higher than that.

This one is reprint, which is why I was able to get it for $.25.  I didn’t have it though, but I do now.

2010 Topps Cards Your Mom Threw Out

The following card was even cheaper since it was free.  I figured since it’s a Tom Seaver, I’d throw it on here as well.  Dennis from Too Many Verlanders and the awesome Too Many Manninghams sent me a PWE with this card and a couple of Indianapolis Colts cards.

1975 Topps Mini

He said he picked it up cheap at a card show.  It’s vintage, it’s mini and it’s Tom Seaver.  It’s pretty awesome.  Thanks Dennis.

Sox from a Tiger fan

I received a PWE from Dennis over at “Too Many Verlanders” and his best blog “Too Many Manninghams”.  This was a nice surprise because he knows I’m not really buying any cards other than pc stuff and don’t really trade anymore so when guys like Dennis send me a PWE, they do it with the understanding that they probably won’t get anything back, or at least not for some time.  Which makes me appreciate the packages even more.  But enough chatting, let’s check out what he sent me.

John Danks – 2013 Topps #150

The only Chicago White Sox of the package that’s still with the team.  Although 2 of the other 3 are retired so there’s that.  He’s struggled the last few years but as of right now, he’s over .500 for the first time since 2010.

Carlos Quentin – 2009 Topps Ticket to Stardom #128

This would be the 1 guy still playing, although he’s with the San Diego Padres now.  I liked him with the Sox but he struggled to stay on the field because of injuries.

Jermaine Dye – 2009 Topps Ticket to Stardom #69

Our 2005 World Series MVP.  The picture is of the perforated edition but Dennis sent me the base card.  COMC didn’t have that one listed so I used this one.

Jim Thome – 2009 Topps Ticket to Stardom perforated #189

This one is actually the perforated card.  I said he was no longer on the Sox but I do believe he is in the system somewhere, I want to say in the front office.

Magglio Ordonez – 2005 Upper Deck, 2009 Upper Deck.  Aaron Rowand – 2005 Topps

Doesn’t surprise me to get a couple of Magglio from Dennis.  Since he bailed on the White Sox to the Tigers.  After these 3 cards, I still need 12 cards of the 2005 Upper Deck team set, technically 14 because I’ll need 2 Joe Credes and 2 Mark Buehrles to cover the player collections first.  I still need 14 (19) for the 2009 Upper Deck team set and 12 (16) of the 2005 Topps set.

Magglio Ordonez – 2001 Donruss, 1999 Fleer and 1999 Topps

More earlier Magglios.  I didn’t have much of the 2001 Donruss or 1999 Fleer growing up, but I had a crap load of 1999 Topps.  I need 9 (11) cards to complete the 2001 Donruss set, 16 (18) cards for the 1999 Fleer set and 7 cards for the 1999 Topps set.

So while every set he hit, I’m not even close to finishing, they were all cards I needed so a huge thanks to Dennis but you haven’t seen the best yet.  You will tomorrow, over at Too Many Manninghams, so be sure to check that out tomorrow night.

As previously mentioned, Dennis of Too Many Verlanders hooked me up with a awesome package of cards a few weeks ago.  We’ve seen the 2 player collection that he sent cards for, and being the gracious guy that he is, he actually hit all my collections so today we are going to check out the Vintage collection cards.

As always with a vintage collection post, we will start with the newer cards and work our way down.

Checklist – 1985 Donruss

I know, nothing too exciting but do you know why I like receiving these cards from fellow bloggers, because then I don’t have to pay cash for them down the road when I’m close to completing them.  Which is a ways away since this is only my 14th card but technically, it’s not part of the set but for future references, I will be collecting checklists with the sets so I still needed it.

Bill Madlock (diamond king) and Rollie Fingers – 1983 Donruss

I’m not sure how Dennis came about with these cards because as far as I know, they don’t fit into any of his collections but I’m not complaining.  These are my 11th and 12th card of the 1983 Donruss set.  A long ways to go but some damn good players to knock off the checklist.

John Wathan – 1982 Donruss

My 30th card of the 1982 Donruss set, a pretty decent catcher in his day.  9 years playing with Kansas City before hanging it up and doing what a lot of catchers do and start managing.

Rick Dempsey and Scott McGregor – 1981 Donruss

I’m sorry but I love this set, so many memories of these cards.  I want to say that the Donruss were the hardest to come by in my area in 1981 so it was pretty awesome when we ran across them.  A couple from the Baltimore Orioles battery.  Dempsey was a very durable player in a not so durable position with 24 years in the league.  He was a 2 time World Series champion and even pulled the MVP award of the series in 1983.  McGregor is a former all-star and World Series Champion as well.  They are my 25th and 26th cards of the set.

Maybe Dennis bought a box of assorted Donruss now that this post is up and I realized they all were the same company.  Who knows?  Who cares?  All I know is Dennis sent me an awesome package and I’m having a blast leading up to Friday’s post (you do not want to miss those cards).  Come back here tomorrow for the cards that will fill spots in my White Sox team sets.

Dennis week–Tuesday

Yesterday we saw the Jim Abbott cards that Dennis from Too Many Verlanders sent me.  Tonight we’ll get to see another former Wolverine and a future Hall of Famer, on July 27th to be exact.

Barry Larkin – 1988 Donruss, 1988 Topps and 1989 Donruss

As you can tell, my Barry Larkin collection is in it’s infancy since I didn’t even have these junk wax cards, but I do now, thanks to Dennis.

These are great cards because these are years that I collected and had as a teen.  Although I remember having very few 1989 Upper Deck, I’m not sure I’ve ever owned that card before.

As you can see, he sent me a lot from Barry’s early career which I definitely needed.

I always forget the scanner goes right to left and not left to right, that’s why the earlier card is on the right.  Love the photo on both these cards, great action shots.

Dennis even sent a couple of newer cards, again, scanned backwards.  I had never seen any of the Colgan’s Chip cards until I saw it on Too Many Manninghams.  With all of these cards he sent me, he more than doubled my Barry Larkin collection

Dennis week–Monday

Anyone who has traded with Dennis of Too Many Verlanders, knows how great of a trader he is.  I’ve traded with him before and I feel like I still owe him but he always says it’s cool.  He knows now that I’m not really buying hardly anything with some of my financial issues and he stills sends me cards.  He picked himself up a bunch of Michigan cards and sent me a bunch of those but he also added some other stuff for this blog as well.  So we are going to take a break from the Cheaper Than Stamps for a week and catch you up on what he sent me.  Let’s start with a couple of player collections that we share.

Jim Abbott – 1990 Fleer & 1990 Score

Technically, these 2 cards could go on Too Many Manninghams because Abbott is a former Michigan Wolverine.  That would be one of the reason that Dennis and I share this collection but I decided to stick them over here since he’s in his Angels uniform. 

While I like Jim Abbott because he’s a Wolverine, I was always fascinated with his story because of what he’s accomplished with only one hand.  My father had his arm amputated because of cancer and he loved to bowl and taught himself to bowl left handed and while my father never made the pros, it was a pretty special accomplishment to continue doing what he loved which is what Jim Abbott did, he didn’t let it stop him from doing what he loved.

Trade with Dennis

Dennis and I met up at the University of Michigan youth day a few weekends back for a quick in person trade.  Real quick for me because I only had 1 card for him while he brought me a whole Walmart bag full of stuff.  The majority of it were Cubs cards for my son but also some cards from me.  To see the awesome Michigan card he sent me, check it out over at “Too Many Manninghams”.  But I’ll show you some of the other goodies he sent me.

All of these are new Frank Thomas cards for the White Sox Collection.  And one Jim Thome card in there as well if you can find it.  I have a crap load of Frank Thomas cards so for him to hit this many that I didn’t is pretty impressive.

He sent me some Indianapolis Colts cards, which I don’t collect anymore but I do have a nephew who just got into football cards recently so I’ll give them those, minus the Peyton Manning cards above because those go to the Peyton Manning Collection.

Trade with Dennis, part 2.

As you may have noticed in part 1, Dennis overdid himself with the Wolverines he sent me.  Well he did with the baseball side too.  So sit back and enjoy part 2 of this 4 part trade with Dennis.  Yes, 4 parts, that’s how awesome the cards he sent me were.

The Topps Gallery are some great looking cards.  The middle one of Frank Thomas is numbered to /50.  All these are new to the White Sox collection.  I didn’t have any of the Topps 205, let alone the mini one.  And the Konerko I already had in my player collection so that one goes to this collection.  And you can never go wrong with a Hall of Famer like Hoyt Wilhelm.

This card is great.  The uniform, a Hall of Famer, my first relic of his.  Awesome!

Jermaine Dye – 2008 Topps Moment’s & Milestones autograph

World Series MVP Jermaine Dye’s autograph.  And that’s not even the best auto in this lot from Dennis.

Harold Baines - 2005 Topps Autograph

One of my favorite players for the Sox.  My favorite uniforms.  And an on card autograph.  I love this card.

Seriously, go back and look at each of these players that I got relics and auto’s of.  Hall of Famers, future Hall of Famers, World Series MVP, and one of the top Sox (who some argue is Hall of Fame worthy).

Trade with Dennis

Dennis doesn’t believe in fair trading.  He likes to send huge box loads of cards, knowing I only have a few cards set aside for him.  Actually, Dennis knows I’m good for it because we’ve traded before and we email a bit with our interest in the Wolverines.  He had said he was going to send me a package so I expected the Wolverine auto’s he sent because we had discussed those before.  But he sent me a box full of Sox cards as well.  You’ll see those here, you’ll have to check out the Wolverine cards over at Dennis sight “Too Many Manninghams” which he lets me guest post there.

Like I said, he sent me a crap load of Sox cards.  I won’t go into all of those but I will show the Konerko cards.  There were about double these just in Konerko cards but I already had the others in my player collection.  But they will probably all be needed in the White Sox Collection.

All these Konerko cards will go to the Konerko collection.  And I will be going through the rest of the box to find a huge amount of Sox cards to go to the team collection.

Trade from AJ

I sent some Yankees cards over to AJ of “The Lost Collector” awhile back and he had told me he didn’t have any cards for me and I told him it was fine, hit me up when you do.  That is one thing I really love about trading with fellow bloggers, they always get you back.  I don’t even make a list of my trades I send out because I know I’ll get a return package when they can get to it.  And I’ve done it in the reverse order as well, Dennis of “Too Many Grandersons” gave me a huge box of cards for my PC’s and all I had were about 20-25 cards for him.  He said it was cool, hit him back when I do.  But he hasn’t said anything about me owing him, he hasn’t hounded me or even mentioned them, in fact, he even hinted he had some more cards for me.  And that’s what I did with AJ, we had traded before so I knew he’d hit me back.  I had forgotten all about it until he e-mailed a few weeks back to let me know he hadn’t forgotten about me.  I told him it was cool, I look forward to not knowing and all of the sudden, there’s a bubble mailer in my mailbox.  Or rather, my wife hands it to me while rolling her eyes.
Here are the awesome cards he sent.

A Magglio Ordonez rookie, I liked Mags until he left demanding more money.  That always leaves a sour taste in my mouth.  But I still need his Sox cards so he’s still welcome in my team collection.  A Mike Hart numbered to /49 which would be a Colts and a former Michigan player.  More on him later.  If you look at my Photo Cleansing posts, you know I like Michael Jordan, what do I like better, Michael Jordan in a Sox uniform.  And check out the Paul Konerko rookie, he looks so young and was still a catcher.  And another Dodger Konerko.  I remember having him on some Reds cards as well when I collected before but I haven’t come across any yet for my PC.  And the first card pictures, a Chris Webber, but wait, is that a Sox player on there as well.  Let’s take a look.

It’s a Sox player, but wait, that’s Alex Rodriguez.  What is he doing in a Sox uniform?  Even the back of the card says he’s a prospect for the Seattle Mariners.  I went to baseball-reference.com and looked up his minor league record, even though he was drafted by Seattle I thought maybe he played for the Sox organization and went back to Seattle.  So after further review, I have no clue why he’s wearing the Sox uniform.  I’m telling myself that’s because he has always wanted to play for the White Sox, yeah, that sounds good.  If you know why he’s depicted in a Sox uniform, please let me know.




A Robert “Tractor” Traylor autograph from Sage.  This is a great card, I remember watching him play at Michigan and for those who hadn’t heard, he past away just a few months ago.  I had looked at picking up an autograph on ebay after his death but I figured I’d wait a bit, mainly because I’m a cheap ass.  Now I’m glad I did,  Great card for the Michigan collection.


A Mike Hart auto numbered to /99.  I really love this card, I pulled this one out and immediately showed it to my wife.  Although it doesn’t technically fit in my PC because I decided not to collect Colts cards and I only collect Michigan players in their Wolverine uniforms, I’m still keeping it.  Mike Hart was one of my favorite players when he was with the Wolverines.  Did you know he only had 3 fumbles his entire college career.  That alone is pretty impressive.  But he always seemed like a good guy and he played with everything he had.  I’ll always love guys that leave it on the field, who play their asses off, no matter what.  Mike Hart was one of those players.  And I think after receiving the 2 Mike Hart cards in the mail, that I must add a player collection of him.  How could I not, all his cards should be Colts or Michigan cards.  And he was huge at Michigan.  Lord knows, we could use another RB like him right now.

And finally, if you know AJ, he’s trying to collect this set.  I seen this card when he posted about the lots of these he had won but I never thought he’d send me one.  I really hope it was a dupe and he doesn’t have to still get one for his set collection.  As you know, I do love the vintage.  This is a 1968 Topps game card of Gary Peters.  I don’t blame AJ for going for this set, they are great looking cards.  I had run across a few searching boxes but never came across any Sox.  So this one was a definite welcome to the White Sox Collection.

Cheap Ebay hits

I’m working on my Google document lists today.  I’ve finished the additions to the Player Collection pages, and added a Wolverine Collection page.  I’m working on the White Sox Collection page now.  I love collecting cards, and I love having them all cataloged, but I hate doing all the work to get them there.

I picked up these 2 cards when I bought some cards for Dennis of “Too Many Grandersons” that I owed him.  It was $2.75 for unlimited shipping and I had already picked up a small stack for Dennis so I figured, what the hell, might as well get a couple for me since the shipping was pretty much free.

A couple of Wolverine auto’s for my Michigan collection.  I’m going to consider my shipping free so I paid a total of $4.79 for these 2 cards, a little more than I usually try to pay on ebay but it was really hard to buy cards and not be able to keep any for myself.  He actually had 2 of the Adrian Arrington’s but Dennis already had that card so I just got the one for myself.

Thanks again everybody for joining me on my mini-celebration of my 100th post.  I doubt I’ll do it every 100 posts but I may do some just for fun in the future.  I got so many comments on that post that I didn’t respond to any.  For all my new followers and commenters, feel free to comment elsewhere and I’ll do my best to respond.  It’s always great to get comments on my posts.  I’ve bookmarked a bunch more sites to add to my blogroll too, just something else for me to accomplish.

I downloaded the Google Reader app on my phone so hopefully I can read blogs elsewhere and leave me time to do other things when I get home to my laptop, like work on my have/for trade lists.  Or my photo gallery of my cards.

As mentioned in a previous post, I met Dennis of “Too Many Grandersons” in person at Fan Appreciate Day in Ann Arbor for a trade, we hung out a bit while waiting in lines and talked some Michigan football.  I felt bad after the trade, Dennis gave me a lot of cards and some great hits.  I definitely owe him more and will be on the lookout for some great cards to repay the trade.  I just scanned very few of what he gave me, a scan of each teams/players.  He gave me way more than represented here.

Again, a small representative.  It was tough to only scan 8 cards.  There was a whole bunch of Peyton Manning’s as well as other Colts stars.

I scanned the Paul Konerko’s that I didn’t have for the White Sox portion of the trade.  The majority of the cards I got from Dennis were White Sox.  Of course, the main reason we read each others blogs are for the following team.

The Maize and Blue.  This was the smallest portion of the trade but that’s because he collects them as well but he gave me a bunch of his dupes.    In the last week or so my Michigan collection went from 6 or 7 cards to closing in on a 100 or so.  I’ve hit a few small lots on ebay pretty cheap as well as what Dennis gave to me.

The 2 Peyton Mannings are pretty cool.  I had never seen the coins before (1998 Pinnacle mint collection) and I’m always up for a patch card.  But the Harold Baines autograph is awesome.  Love Harold!  And the Gordon Beckham razor letterman was the “hit” of the lot.  I really love this card.  I can’t thank Dennis enough for that one.  I will definitely be on the lookout for some cards to get to you.

Fan Appreciation

Yesterday, my family and I all went up to Ann Arbor for the fan appreciation day at “The Big House”. I had purchased 3 different magazines with Denard Robinson’s picture on the front so myself and my 2 kids could get his autograph. The Athletic Department had a huge garage sale, it started at 8:30 but we didn’t get there till 10am. If was pretty picked through by the time we got there but I still managed to get 4 or 5 T-shirts at $5/each. I also had previously contacted Dennis from “Too Many Grandersons” and he had said he was going to be there so we decided to hook up at the garage sale and bring each other some cards. He had met up with Dustin from “No Relics Pulled” before I had gotten there and they waited for me at the entrance. It was great to finally meet some fellow bloggers and fellow Michigan fans. Dustin had to be somewhere so I didn’t get to talk to him much but Dennis and I got together for a trade. I’ll have a trade post at a later date so I can showcase some of the great cards he brought for me. Dennis had a post here about his day, and his great baseball jersey he purchased there. Next year, I’m definitely getting there earlier and getting at least one if not a couple of those. I’ve wanted a Michigan baseball jersey for awhile. I’m jealous of your jerseys, Dennis.

We left the garage sale, and Dennis, and headed for the stadium. We had packed our lunches and sat in the parking lot and ate real quick then hopped in line to get in the stadium. Dennis had sent me a text saying that he had bought a football to get some signatures with so I told him where we were so he could hop in line with us. At this point, we weren’t in bad position as far as being close to the stadium. By the time the gates opened, it was huge, all the way around the parking lot and down a couple of aisles. Gates opened, we all got inside, and went straight for the line for Denard’s autograph. After standing in this line for about 2 hours, and only moving maybe 50 feet. They cut off the line to where nobody else could get auto’s. This sucked, not because we didn’t get an autograph but because the line went nowhere. I’m sure all kinds of people just walked up towards the front and just entered the line. There was no kind of security anywhere to prevent this, and the line was probably 7 or 8 wide all the way up. It should have been roped off and some security. I don’t think they had a clue what they were in for. By the time they cut us off, it was too late to get anybody else’s autographs. Dennis hit a couple of the other lines and said he got nowhere in any of them. My family and I all decided to head into the stadium. We went down to the field where they were having field goal demonstrations. I hope it was practice because after last year, they need to practice 24 hrs. a day. We also went over and saw Brady Hoke at his signing. On the way out we happen to be where the buses were and saw a bunch of them hop on.

As much as we were disappointed in the whole autograph fiasco and standing in line for about 5 hours, I had a great time. Considering I live in Notre Dame country, it’s just nice to be around all those Michigan fans and to be on the campus. Got to talk baseball and Michigan football with Dennis, compared Notre Dame fans to Ohio State fans with some young women behind us that live in Ohio. Just the atmosphere alone was awesome. Great time with family and friends in a whole day about Michigan football, could it really be that bad? Below are a bunch of pics taken by my mom and I. throughout the day.

Yes, they are real. The cheerleaders, I mean, real Michigan cheerleaders. Although I look a little creepy next to them, but it was all in fun.

Like I said, I had a great time despite the few disappointments. My kids absolutely loved it, it was their first time in any stadium that huge. I was glad we went and will definitely be back next year.

Thanks again for the trade, Dennis. I’ll be looking for some more stuff to send your way since ours was so lopsided. FYI – I love the Beckham, I showed it off in the car when everyone got back.
