Welcome

This blog is about sports cards. I tend to only purchase cheap items so don't come hear expecting to see big money cards. My teams collections are Chicago White Sox and Michigan Wolverines. I also have a bunch of player collections.

Quarry Cards

A quick post before I head to bed.

As I'm sure most of you know, Johnny over at Cards From the Quarry hosts a Sunday PWE Trade Bait where you can pick cards (he posts one from every team) and he will PWE them to you in exchange for something off his want list (or other cards he can trade). I selected a bunch and got them in a few envelopes. I had to go to Sportlots to grab stuff for him because I didn't have anything in my very limited trade box.

Everyone of these beauties are numbered. 1 current member (Engel) and 1 World Series Champion (Jenks). Here are the numbers breakdown. 28th card of Jenks, 14th of Engel, 3rd card of Carter, 6th of Fry, 53rd card of Peavy and 151st card of Sale.

A couple more in different envelopes. This boxey Frazier and an Icons Dye. I really thought I had the Dye when it came up but apparently not. I think I have a Thome from the same set that's numbered. It is my 33rd card of Frazier and 89 cards of Dye.

I really appreciate these serial numbered cards because I tend to buy cheap which means, serial numbered are usually out of my price range.

Completed Team Sets–2007 Fleer

I finished this set awhile ago and am just not getting around to posting it.  I have some new stuff (2013) to scan, hopefully tomorrow.

completed-07fleer01

Action shots, team logo and player name, it has all my requirements for a good card.  No border would have made it better and I don’t know that I need to see the team name when the logo is on there.

But it is a nice set, all in all.  No complaints really.

Trade with Dennis

Before I get to the trade post, I wanted to let everyone know if you follow me on Twitter, I’ve changed my address as in set up a new account.  I’m going to use the original Twitter for my Random Thoughts From A Random Guy blog as well as my personal account.  So you can still feel free to follow it, but the My Sports Obsession Twitter account is now @sportobsession6 so go on over there and check it out.  This way my followers for each blog don’t get tweets they don’t care about.  My family won’t have to ignore on the sports tweets.

Dennis of “Too Many (Insert Tigers player here)” and I got together last weekend for a real quick in person trade.  I was in Ann Arbor heading up for my annual Michigan game.  This year I got tickets for the Iowa game, mainly because my other 2 options were on weekends I worked.  But I met Dennis a few exits before the exit for the stadium so he could avoid the traffic and I could go straight to the game.  It worked out pretty well.  I handed him a couple of cards I think he liked and he gave me a stack as well.  Dennis always thinks of my kids (he met them last year at the Fan Appreciation Day).  He gave me a stack of Chicago Cubs cards to go to Trevor, and he brought a styrofoam wand that had a light in it for Samantha.  He had gotten it the night before at the ND/Michigan hockey game.  She loved it, so much I had to take it away the first night she had it because she wouldn’t stop playing with it when she was supposed to be going to bed.  But here’s what he sent me.

trade-dennis01

All of the above were new to the White Sox Collection.  Bowman is such a pain in the ass set to collect so I’m always happy to get them in trades so I don’t have to mess with finding them.

trade-dennis05

Dennis always tells me about a vintage guy he has at one of his shows and one of these times I’m going to get up there to see him for myself.  I loved these cards.  And even getting 2 of the team card works out because I can put 1 of them in the Vintage Collection.

 trade-dennis03     trade-dennis08

The Clayton Richard card twice as good as the other Sox cards because he is a Michigan man.  This also was numbered and I assume a rookie card.  The more Michael Jordan cards I get with him playing baseball, the more I think about starting a player collection of his.  Just baseball because they would all be Chicago White Sox uniforms or at least in the organization.

trade-dennis07He even managed to hit a couple of my player collections.  He hit the Paul Konerko collection with this Bowman card.  I thought I had this when I first saw it but I have the chrome version and that’s what confused me.

trade-dennis06

I really liked this well loved card for the Luis Aparicio Collection.  You can never go wrong with vintage White Sox but you just make it awesome when it’s Luis Aparicio.

trade-dennis09

He also hit me up all these for the rarely mentioned Peyton Manning Collection.  I don’t go out of my way to pick his cards up so I always enjoy getting a bunch in trades.  I’m willing to bet about 95% of that collection came from fellow bloggers.

trade-dennis04

I saved the hit for last, but I’m not sure it’s the best card I got.  Even though it didn’t scan very well it’s a pretty awesome card.  A dual bat card of Frank Thomas and Magglio Ordonez.  It is a much better looking card in person that on this scan.

Dennis also sent me 1 other card, but it goes over on the “Too Many Manninghams” site as it’s a Michigan auto.  I’ll throw it in with some other Michigan cards that I’ve received lately so go over there to check them out.

Be sure to check out “Too Many Verlanders” (I had to go to the site to see what it was named this week) right now because he’s giving away a bunch of cards in team lots.  As always, thanks Dennis for another great trade.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!  Be safe

Completed Team Sets–2010 Topps

team-10topps

My first flagship completed set.  This is only series 1 & 2, I don’t include Update as part of the set.  If they intended it to be part of the set, they would pick up where the numbering left off instead of using the U numbering system.  At least that’s the way I think about it.

team-10topps02

I’ve heard complaints of this design, it’s not my favorite but I don’t think it’s horrible either.  I like the logo on the front.  Almost all action shots.

team-10topps03

Love the team card.  I threw in the Beckham because it’s a completed insert set.  It was the only White Sox in the When They Were Young set, therefore it’s completed.

Completed Team Sets–2008 Upper Deck First Edition Update

team-08udfirstedupdate

I completed the update part of this set only so far.  But it’s the largest team set that I’ve posted so far with the 5 cards above and the 5 cards below.

team-08udfirstedupdate02

Another no border set which I like.  Some of the borders are cool and I’m not totally against them, but I prefer the cards without them.  I’m not a big fan of these sets that get released in different parts.  I understand it and why they do it.  But I tend to buy a bunch of the first set released because it’s a new product.  By the time series 2 gets released, I’m over it.

Completed Team Sets–2007 Fleer Ultra

team-07fleerultra

I like this set as well.  Good action shots, no borders and I really like the black background on the rookie cards.  Goes well with the black and gray uniforms.  My first completed set of more than 6 cards.  I bought a bunch of these from a fellow blogger and almost completed the set but was a card or 2 short which I ended up getting in trades.

Cheap ebay purchases

I picked up these cards awhile back on ebay but hadn’t gotten around to scanning or posting them.  They’ve been sitting on my TV for about a month or so, but here they are.  Finally.

ebay01

Mark Buehrle – 2007 UD Spectrum jersey #’d 49/75

Brian Miller – 2005 Bowman’s Best green auto #’d 49/399

Always will take any Buehrle relics.  Brian Miller I’ve never heard of, but a cheap White Sox auto is why I got this.

ebay02

Carlos Quentin – 2010 Topps Allen & Ginter’s relic

John Danks – 2010 Topps Allen & Ginter’s relic

Jermaine Dye – 2008 Topps Allen & Ginter’s relic

4 jerseys, 2 of those with pinstripes.  All starters.  And a rookie auto.  All for less than $9/shipped. The 2 2010’s are from the same seller, everything else was separate sellers.

jenks11toppsda122

Also won this about 2 weeks ago.  I actually forgot I had won it and the seller had sent an apology because he hadn’t shipped it yet, he said ebay wasn’t showing it as paid until he actually clicked on the link.  He issued a refund and sent the card before I responded.  I told him not to worry about it and sent him back his money.  We all make mistakes, I’ve made that one myself before.  And beside, I only paid .50.  And technically, I didn’t pay it, I used my ebay bucks.

I scanned some more stuff tonight that I picked up at the card show on Sunday.  Don’t get too excited, I spent even less there than I did on the above cards.  But at least I might post something once in awhile.

Crinkly cards with no Wrappers

I picked up some cards from “Crinkly Wrappers” as he was downsizing his cards.  I picked up about a 300 or 400 count box of cards for cheap.  I won’t go through and post everything I got but I will show the White Sox cards I got.  Everything else I got will be up for trade when I get around to getting them all on my trade page, but if you see a set here that your collecting and want to know if I have certain cards of the set, let me know.  Comment or email jccsst1022 at gmail dot com.

purchase01

Got a Konerko, yes!  I really like the Danks rookie in the bottom corner.  I like the rookie cards in general with the black background.

purchase02

No Konerko’s here, but all cards I didn’t have.  Like I said, I got a bunch of these sets so if you need any, let me know.

Thanks to “Crinkly Wrappers” for the chance at these cards.

Trade with Justin

Justin of “Justin’s World” posted a comment that he wanted a couple of cards from one of my value boxes I opened, so we emailed back and forth and worked out a trade.  It was a relatively small trade.  Here is what we agreed on.

trade04justin

That’s what we agreed on.  Much to my surprise, there was much more in his package to me.  Check them out.

trade05justin

And those are just some of the highlights.  I feel like I shortchanged Justin big time.  I didn’t have much for his player collections and I had traded most of my Cubs cards awhile back so I didn’t have much to send him.  But his last post mentioned he collects Pirates as well, I didn’t know that, I will have to see if I have anything to send him back.  Thanks again, Justin.

Trade with Things are Funner Here

For my 3rd and final trade post of the weekend, I had a trade with Julie over at “Things Are Funner Here.” Another great trade, I’m having so much fun trading with these other bloggers. If your on the fence about doing so, hop on over to this side, it’ll be worth it. My White Sox collection is getting bigger and bigger by the trade. I’ve been too busy to get out and buy some packs so the only thing new I’ve been able to play with are my trade packages. And Julie sent a great one as well. Here’s some of the highlights.

aaa-julie001

Love the top 2 cards, just the vintage look of them are awesome. I’m a big fan of Peavy and AJ for the way they play. Hard all the time. A flashback of Contreras who was won of our World Series heroes. I really like Ken Griffey jr, always have. I wish his stay with the Sox would have been better. He didn’t perform as well as to be expected. But I did love seeing him in a White Sox uniform. And of course an Alexei Ramirez rookie, of which I had none yet.

aaa-julie002

The Buehrle card is a numbered one, I’m guessing an exchange for the Oswalt numbered card I sent her. I really like the Allen & Ginter’s, especially the Peavy one in the middle. Also didn’t have any of the UD Xponential cards, I like the looks of that card.

aaa-julie003

And of course, Julie boosted my Paul Konerko collection with all of these by quite a bit, Actually she about doubled it. So a big shout out to Julie, go check out her blog “Things Are Funner Here” for more great card blogging.

Trade with Night Owl

My 2nd trade post of the weekend is with “Night Owl”  I reached out and sent him some Dodgers cards and he had sent some cards in return.  I had actually e-mailed 2 Dodger fans about possible trades before I had realized it so I had to break my Dodger cards in 2.  Sorry guys.  Here’s the highlights.

aaa-owl001

Love, love, love the vintage.  Without looking, I want to say those are all firsts of those years and sets, except the 1981 Topps.  But I certainly don’t mind that card either as it was my starter set back in the day.  Sportflics, awww, I remember how cool those were back in 1986.  Plus a couple of cards of some White Sox broadcasters with Beltin’ Bill Melton and Ed Farmer.  And a current base coach in Harold Baines.

aaa-owl002

And of course, another vintage feel card with the Fisk and I believe the Jenks is my first O-pee-chee card.  Really like the look of the Masterpieces as well.  All in all, another great trade from another great blogger.  Check out the “Night Owl” blog.
