Welcome

This blog is about sports cards. I tend to only purchase cheap items so don't come hear expecting to see big money cards. My teams collections are Chicago White Sox and Michigan Wolverines. I also have a bunch of player collections.

5 card Tuesday

I got 2 envelopes today with 5 cards total. 4 of them in 1 envelope which probably won't excite too many of you as they are White Sox collection cards. The last is a player collection.

Let's get to it.

I picked up this Belle card and was surprised it was my 32nd card of his. I didn't realize I had that many.

I grabbed this Bere card and it makes 31 cards of his. I remember him being a young stud at one point but I don't remember him lasting real long.

This is only my 19th card of Baldwin and like Bere, he was a young stud at one point but he lasted awhile longer than Bere did.

Last but not least (as far as the first envelope), I picked up this Gavin Floyd and it's my 34th card of his. I picked up all 4 of the above cards for $.37/shipped/each. They all actually seem like cards I already have, and I may even, if I do they are in the box that I haven't logged yet. It'll probably be awhile before I get to those though.

This is my 3rd of his from Gypsy Queen but the 1st of the base variety, the other 2 are an insert and a parallel. This is also the 119th card of his in the collection and I picked it up for $.33/shipped.

4 Auto Friday

Once again, all my mail for the week came in one day. I've only had one day all week where I got cards in the mail and than today, I get hit with 6 envelopes today, with 9 cards but only 7 that are staying in my collections.

This is where one of those "extra" cards comes into play. I picked up this 1994 Triple Play for $.54/shipped. I checked the listing again and it was for 1 card even though he sent me a dupe of it. It is my 47th card of the Rock.

I picked up this duo collection card, it goes to the player and the vintage collection. I'm pretty familiar with the 1981 Donruss set and I don't remember ever seeing this card when I was a kid, I'm not sure I've seen it up until a year or so ago. I picked it up for only $.30/shipped and it's my 108th card of the lefty.

I picked up this Yastrzemski card and I was thinking it was my first series 2 card but than I remembered I picked up some Sox cards a few weeks ago. It is however, a player collection that I only added 1 card to last year but this is the 5th card this year. It is also my 59th card of Yaz.

Now to the autograph portion. I picked up this auto of Gavin Floyd for $1.59/shipped. It's a pretty nice card as most of the Masterpieces are. It is my 33rd card of Gavin and my 1st auto of his for the White Sox collection.

I picked this card up in a 2 card lot with a Nebraska player autograph which doesn't go to my collection and this Will Johnson auto is technically a dupe but I'll keep in anyways since it's an auto (unless Dennis needs it). I grabbed the lot of 2 cards for $2.69/shipped.

I also picked up this Adrian Arrington auto for $2.69/shipped. I thought I had a version of this one but I didn't. This is my 13th card and my 8th autograph of Arrington.

I also started a new player collection with this Zak Irvin autograph. I'm sure this collection won't take off as he probably doesn't have to many cards. I checked, he only has 13 cards and they are all from this set. I picked this one up for $1.35/shipped.

2013 Topps Heritage White Sox

As per my new way of getting the latest cards, I purchased my 2013 Topps Heritage team set from Brent of “BrentAndBeccaEbay fame.

brent01

I do like these because, well you know, they look like vintage.

brent02

On top of this team set, it included the SP which I believe was Adam Dunn and Brent even threw in an extra Paul Konerko for the Paul Konerko Collection.

I’m finding this way to get my latest cards to be the cheapest route.  And Brent has been awesome with staying in contact with me about getting extra Konerko’s or inserts.  He was going to give me the Adam Dunn insert card as well but he didn’t end up with any extra, he was actually short on completing all his sets but that’s cool.  He has gone above and beyond as it is.

I was looking at purchasing the Gypsy Queen set from him but I haven’t come across the checklist to browse yet.

Completed Team Sets–2011 Bowman

I needed 2 cards for this set, ended up picking them up twice, go figure.

completed-11bowman01

Another nice set from Bowman, although they don’t change a whole lot year to year for a bit.  Black borders always look good with Chicago White Sox cards.

completed-11bowman02

It does have a Chris Sale rookie though so the set is not all bad.  Although it looks like his arm is broke.  Topps decided to include the team captain, Paul Konerko this year, unlike the last one.

Completed Team Set–2012 Topps

teamset2012topps01

This is the first of 3 2012 Completed Team Sets that Jeff at “2 by 3 Heroes” finished for me.  This one, the base set, being the biggest of the 3.

teamset2012topps02

I remember the Brent Lillibridge catch and it’s great to see it on cardboard.  As a matter of fact, if you click his name, I’m pretty sure I posted the picture after he made it.

teamset2012topps03

And we finish off the Surfboard set, which I believe “Night Owl” dubbed it.  Any 2012 set is great for me to complete because I never bought a pack of cards in 2012

And in case you forgot, I don’t include the update set since they use a different number system.  I count that as a set on it’s own.

Completed Team Sets-2011 Topps

Here’s another flagship set (without the update)

team-11topps

This was probably my first flagship set I completed because 2011 was when I started this blog and therefore really started to collect again.

team-11topps02

I completed this set the old school way.  Got the cards in packs and trading.  So I have a lot of you guys and gals to thank for it.

team-11topps03

It’s not a horrible design, I always like the logo to be on the front along with the players name and they used action photo’s over head shots.  That’s probably the biggest plus but the newer cards generally use action shots over the head shots anymore.

team-11toppsupdate

I even have the Update set for the whole complete 2011 Topps set.  Like I said above, it was first year back and I bought a lot of cards.

Completed Team Sets–2009 Topps Ticket to Stardom

team-09toppstickettostardom

Back in 2009, I was buying boxes from the LCS, this was one of them.  I don’t know if I completed the team set back then or not.  But when I got back into it last year I still had the majority of them.

team-09toppstickettostardom02

My largest team set to date at 11 cards.  By the time I’m done posting, it’ll be larger.  I’ve completed a couple of team sets from just a few years ago.  From the Topps base sets.

Completed Team Sets–2009 Bowman

team-09bowman

My first Bowman set completion.  Or at least the base set of it.  This is another set that annoys me because of all the extra sets included.  Draft Picks, Prospects, Gold then Chrome and it starts all over again.

Completed Team Sets–2008 Upper Deck First Edition Update

team-08udfirstedupdate

I completed the update part of this set only so far.  But it’s the largest team set that I’ve posted so far with the 5 cards above and the 5 cards below.

team-08udfirstedupdate02

Another no border set which I like.  Some of the borders are cool and I’m not totally against them, but I prefer the cards without them.  I’m not a big fan of these sets that get released in different parts.  I understand it and why they do it.  But I tend to buy a bunch of the first set released because it’s a new product.  By the time series 2 gets released, I’m over it.

Trade with Cardboard Collections

I sent Colby some cards when I put the call out for people to take my cards.  This was his return package.  I’ve received a number of return packages even though I told people they weren’t required.  That just shows you how awesome this community of card bloggers really is.

trade-cardboardcollections04

These are just a few of the White Sox cards that he sent.  These were some of my favorites of the lot.  I thought I had the team card but apparently not.

trade-cardboardcollections05

You know the next best thing to vintage is the cards that look like they are vintage.

trade-cardboardcollections02

This one was new to the Luis Aparicio Collection.  I always love getting new cards for that collection since it’s my newest one.

trade-cardboardcollections01

Colby added 3 more Paulie’s to the Paul Konerko Collection.  Again, I figured I had the O-Pee-Chee at the bottom but apparently not.  Guess it’s a good thing I keep records and don’t go off just my memory.

trade-cardboardcollections03

He even knocked out 3 Peyton Manning’s off the Peyton Manning Collection.  I always like getting these in trades because I never buy any football cards so this collection relies on the kindness of others.  I really like the action shot in the bottom cards.

Thanks Colby, everyone be sure to check out “Cardboard Collections”.

Trade with Spiegel

Spiegel of “Nomo’s Sushi Platter” had told me he wanted the Conlon Dodgers from the set I had bought.  So off they went, that was probably the most cards I’ve sent to a Dodger collector in awhile.  I don’t have hardly any Dodgers because there is so many of them out there and I’ve traded with a bunch of them.  Here’s what Spiegel sent me in return.

trade-spiegel01

Gotta love the 1966 Romano, you know, just because it’s vintage.  But also all the other cards he sent.  He sent a bunch of inserts that I needed, the above is just a few of them.  The Sergio Santos is a purple refractor.  I already had the base and the chrome refractor and now the purple.  Great card Spiegel.

trade-spiegel02

3 Extra Edition, Gold Floyd, Kimball Dunn and Sale Chrome.  Spiegel has already gone above and beyond our trade and then he puts the Danks blue sparkly (Hope Diamond) numbered 60/60.  Thanks Spiegel, truly a great trade.

Trade with Potch

gavin-floyd-thumb-580x326-305535

Before I get to the trade post (because I know how much all of you like them) I wanted to give a shout out to Gavin Floyd of the White Sox.  If you haven’t heard, check out the article here.  You don’t see too many good stories about today’s athletes.  And yes, I would have given him a shout out even if he played for another team.  If you don’t read the trade post below, be sure to check out the Pujols cartoon at the bottom.

Potch of “Potch Wheeler and the Cardboard Heroes” saw a couple of cards he wanted, I believe out of some update packs and I sent them his way, in exchange, he sent me these.  Potch must have gone through my want lists because he sent me a bunch of Sox I didn’t have.  I’ll just post the new and the old and spare you all the years in between.  Here’s the new.

trade-potch02

Big thanks for the Allen & Ginter’s because I don’t buy any packs of these.  Not exactly my favorite set.  I do like the design, I just don’t like all the other non-baseball cards that come with it so I don’t buy the packs.  I really like the Hometown Heroes inserts as well.  And the Aparicio up there as well.  I’ve been getting a lot of his cards and he was one of my favorite vintage Sox players.

trade-potch01

He also sent me these 1977 Topps and an 1984.  I always like the vintage.  I’m waiting to see which vintage team set I finish first.  Between all you bloggers, I’ve been slowly filling them up.  I think 1975 is the closest but I still need quite a few of those too.

Thanks for the trade Potch, as always, it’s great trading with you.  And it’s nice to see your original blog name back as well.

I also ran across this cartoon today and had to post it, it is too funny.  Well, maybe not to you Cub fans.

Trade with Night Owl

I had posted some Lineage mini’s that Night Owl had wanted so he had contacted me about a trade.  If you know Night Owl, and most of us do, he loves the 1975 Topps and in turn, loves the new Lineage mini’s that look like the 1975’s.  I love his blog, both of them.  “Night Owl Cards” is great and you can tell he puts a lot of time into his posts.  They are humorous and informative, and he shows lots of cards.  And I’ll be sad because “75 Topps (it’s far out, man)” is about done but he says he’s going to start a new set blog after a small vacation from doing 2 blogs so I’m looking forward to seeing what set is up next.  I love baseball cards for the players, because I love baseball.  Night Owl loves the cards, he shows me things I didn’t even realize were there.  He’s way more observant with them than I am.  Which is why I love his posts.

But back to the trade, he sent me a stack of White Sox cards.  I won’t show you everything, they were all appreciated, but most of you won’t care about those.  Here were my favorites.

trade-nightown1

All these will go to my Konerko Collection.  I really like the A&G mini, I hadn’t seen any of these in person yet as I didn’t buy any packs of A&G.  Not a big fan of the set, too much crap that’s not basball.  I do like the baseball cards in the set, just not everything else.  So I always appreciate A&G in trade packages.  I might have the first 2 SP Authentic in my Konerko Collection but even if I do, they can go into the White Sox Collection.

trade-nightown2

A Gavin Floyd 2010 Topps Chrome Refractor.  I, like a lot of you, like the Chrome’s but I don’t have too many of them.  I like this 2009 UD Spectrum, you can see the purple in the scan so I’m guessing it’s a purple parallel but I don’t know for sure.  I haven’t taken the time to investigate it, but either way, I like the card.  Not so sure Carlos will be with us next year, but he was good for us, when he could stay healthy.

trade-nightown3

And Night Owl was nice enough to send me this beauty.  Mark Buehrle (who is my favorite pitcher on the team) relic from A&G.  I love these framed mini relic cards but I don’t like the empty spaces between the mini and the frame and between the mini and the swatch of jersey.  I’ve seen others where they are all tightly together and I like those better.  But I still like the cards, I like the outside frame.

So a big thanks to Night Owl and be sure to check out his blogs if you haven’t already. “Night Owl Cards” and “75 Topps (it’s far out, man)”.  If you’re a card collector than I know you’ll love both off them.

Things are Funner Here, I mean there

I sent Julie of “Things are Funner Here” a trade package of some stuff I picked up for her.  I specifically went looking for some Phillies relics/autos cards because I saw some White Sox stuff on her trade bait page and I was planning on surprising her with the package but apparently I forgot to copy down her address last time so I had to contact her for her address so I took away the surprise.  But Julie sent back a great package anyways.  Here are the highlights.

tradejulie02

Brent Morel rookie who is more or less our starting 3rd basemen this year.  Tyler Flowers rookie who is supposed to be our catcher of the future but hasn’t panned out so far.  Frank Thomas finest (I always liked those cards) and a Thomas rookie reprint of his 90 topps with no-name.  Ken Griffey didn’t do well for us but I have always liked him and liked seeing him in the White Sox colors.  I always have liked the all around good guys.

tradejulie01

7 Konerko’s including a jersey card and a Tom Seaver.  More great cards for my player collections.  I think I have one or two of them already but that’s just fine, because I like to put one in my player collection first, and then one for the team collection.

tradejulie03

My first Gordon Beckham relic card whom I also like a lot.  And the Gavin Floyd Bowman green that Julie had posted a few weeks ago that made me go look at her trade bait page to begin with.

Great cards Julie, thanks a bunch.  Be sure to check out “Things are Funner Here” folks.

Trade with Nomo’s Sushi Platter

And yet another trade last week.  I love getting trade’s in the mail, you get to build your collection and all it costs me is cards I had no use for anyways.  You get to give those cards to someone who loves them in return for cards you love.  And that leads me to my most recent trade with Spiegel at “Nomo’s Sushi Platter.”  I sent him some cards, he sent me some.  And some great cards did he send.  Here’s the highlights.

sox-bowman

First off, some Bowman with some gold.  As a set, I’m not a big fan of Bowman because I like getting cards of players I know.  But I do like the base set of the pro players.  I like the looks of most of the Bowman sets.  Don’t get me wrong, I like the draft pick players too, but I much prefer players I know.

sox1

I know some people out there aren’t big fans of the Toppstown but I like them.  I don’t play any of the games on the site, but I like the looks of them.

sox-vintage

I also like the look of the Upper Deck Signature Stars and of course you should know by now, I like the sets that have the vintage look to them.  And who can complain about 3 different Luis Aparicio’s.

sox-konerko

And Spiegel hooked me up with a slew of Paul Konerko’s for my collection that seems to be getting bigger and bigger with each trade.

mlb-buehrle004   mlb-pierzynski002

And look at all that sparkle.  Mark Buehrle Refractor and an AJ Pierzynski diamond anniversary card.  I love the shine on that card.

mlb-jordan001

And Spiegel must have been reading my blog and noticed how much I like to post Jordan pictures from his days in basketball.  I know, some of you didn’t realize he played basketball before he did baseball, but that’s why I’m here, to educate.  It just so happened that my favorite basketball player of all time, played his baseball with my favorite baseball team’s organization.  That worked out nicely and thanks to Spiegel, I now have my first Jordan baseball card.  And it’s a nice one at that.

mlb-pierzynski003

And to top it off, he threw me a little relic love with this Pierzynski jersey card.  And these were just the highlights, he sent me a whole bunch of cards.  A great trade with him, make sure you check his blog out at “Nomo’s Sushi Platter.”  And if you need a good trade partner, look him up as well.  Thanks again, Spiegel
