Welcome

This blog is about sports cards. I tend to only purchase cheap items so don't come hear expecting to see big money cards. My teams collections are Chicago White Sox and Michigan Wolverines. I also have a bunch of player collections.

Fantasy package

I got an email from Matt over at “Once a Cub” telling me he had some cards to send me for participating in his fantasy baseball.  I had forgotten all about it, probably because I quit about half way through the year.  I didn’t just quit Matt’s, I quit the once that I run and didn’t sign up for any fantasy football either.  I just got burned out on playing fantasy sports.  Maybe I’ll get back into again next year, I thought I might miss playing football this year but I haven’t.  I told Matt he didn’t need to send anything since I bailed on his league, but being a Chicago Cubs fan, he was happy to get rid of his Sox cards.  He sent a good stack but I’m only going to show some highlights.  Let’s check them out.

onceacub01

The 1968 Gary Peters I needed for the team set.  I’m always happy to receive vintage.  The Paul Konerko Upper Deck Starquest went towards the Paul Konerko collection and the Mark Buehrle goes to the new Mark Buehrle collection.

The vintage surprised me, I figured I’d get a stack of White Sox cards but I wasn’t expecting anything like that.  Or anything like this.

onceacub02

A 2012 Topps Chris Sale autograph that will go to the new Chris Sale collection.  And an autographed 2011 Bowman of Spencer Arroyo.  I don’t think it’s a card company autograph as it says nothing on the back about it so I’m guessing it was a TTM or signed somewhere else.  Either way, it’s an autograph and it’s going into the White Sox collection.

Thanks Matt for going above and beyond, it was certainly a better package than I expected.  Then again, maybe I don’t have high expectations of Cubs fans (sorry, couldn’t resist).  Be sure to go check out his site at “Once a Cub”.

Cheaper than stamps #1

What started out as spending my ebay bucks has turned into purchasing cards again.  I’ve gone back to my cheap ebay purchases.  I have a search set up for each of my player collections.  Each search has the settings for free shipping and a range of up to $.30.  Told you it was cheap, but I have a couple of player collections that have very few cards so I thought this would be a way to boost those collections.  I also search for my vintage collection under the same guidelines.  One day I’ll search for Topps, one year at a time.  The next day I’ll do Fleer, the next Donruss, then the next I go back to Topps and repeat.  Let’s take a look at the couple I got in the mail (and scanned) so far.
ebay01
Gary Carter – 1990 Fleer
I was happy to get this card mainly because it’s a Gary Carter card.  This would be one of the player collections that I don’t have very many cards for.  This was only my 7th card in the Gary Carter collection.  I paid a total of $.21 for this card.  That’s right, it cost the seller more to ship the card to me, then I paid for it.  I should probably feel bad, but I really don’t.
ebay02
Cal Ripken jr – 1995 Pinnacle Swing Men
I really didn’t expect to win this card but shockingly enough I’ve actually won quite a few Ripken cards on the cheap.  This is the only one I have on hand at the moment.  This is my 8th Ripken card.  I paid $.30
So those are the first 2 cards.  I have 3 more on hand but I haven’t scanned them yet and I have many more on their way.

Mark Buehrle – 2009 Bowman #121

Our first Mark Buehrle card in the random posts.  Just a plain jane Bowman but I do like White Sox cards with the black borders, it makes them just a little nicer.

Be sure to click the banner below and check out some more great Michigan merchandise and help out some future Michigan students.

2 by 3 Heroes is my hero, part trey

Part 1Part 2

The last couple of days you’ve seen the PC collection cards and the beginning of the vintage cards.  Today, we’ll conclude the vintage collection cards that Jeff from “2 by 3 Heroes” sent me.

19812x3heroes03

1981 (6 cards) – I had actually scanned these 2 separate because I’ve been trying to complete the 1981 Topps set and planned on posting it separate but even when I finish the 2 sets I’ve been trying to complete, ultimately, they are apart of the vintage collection.

1980

1980 (5 cards) – I really wish Topps would bring back the team cards.  I always enjoyed those.  This is the first year that I actually truly consider vintage.

1979

1979 (3 cards) – I really didn’t expect to get any cards from the early 80’s or especially the 70’s when Jeff told me he was sending card from his repack purchases.  This isn’t even all of them yet.

1978

1978 (9 cards) – I always liked this set.  I think it’s the cursive writing in the team name.

1977

1977 (5 cards) – Still getting 70’s cards.  This just shows what a great package Jeff sent me.

1976

1976 (1 card) – Last but not least, an ugly 1976 Topps.  Yeah, never really liked this set.  I think if they made the colors at the bottom at least be close to the team colors it would have been better.  Orioles – Orange, yes.  Green – not even close.

That’s all folks!  An awesome box of cards from a fellow White Sox fan.  Be sure to check out “2 by 3 Heroes” for his regular features like Throwback Thursdays where he shows cards with vintage uniforms.

2 by 3 Heroes is my hero, part deux

Yesterday, you saw the 3 cards that go into my team and player collections.  Today you get to see some of the vintage for the vintage collection.  The really nice thing with receiving these cards is it forced me to finally finish my have list.  So you can click the tab above or right here to check it out.  But you’re here for the cards anyways so let’s get to those.  For those that don’t know, my vintage collection starts with 1987 because that was the last year that I collected as a kid.

1987

1987 (3 cards) – Loved getting the Keith Hernandez Donruss card as I was a New York Mets fan as a kid.  Plus 2 more Topps cards which I have the most card of (other than 1981 Topps and 1973 Topps which I’m trying to complete the sets).

1986

1986 (31 cards) – Nothing special here but that’s because it’s the 1986 set, there is nothing special about it.  But I do like this set, I probably had gotten it just by buying packs growing up, I had a ton of them.

1985

1985 (11 cards) – Another set (Topps) that I had a bunch of growing up.  Probably the first year that I really started collecting.  I had a pretty good collection of Donruss too but not much Fleer.  Kind of like my vintage collection now.

1984

1984 (25 cards) – I just love going through these 80’s sets, so many childhood memories.  I remember trying to get the Topps cards, I didn’t hardly have any Donruss or Fleer.

1983

1983 (18 cards) – I was surprised to see this many 1983 Topps cards and it pretty much doubled that collection.  That was even my first Donruss card.

1982

1982 (4 cards) – The first year that I collected from start to finish.  I believe Night Owl nicknames this the hockey stick set and while I never actually called it that, I did think the stripes on the left were hockey sticks, even as a kid.

That’s all I’m showing you today so you’ll have to come back tomorrow and see the rest of the vintage that Jeff from “2 by 3 Heroes” sent me.

2 by 3 Heroes is my hero

What?  This isn’t a Random PC Card post?  I know, right.

I actually have been getting some cards recently.  No, I haven’t really started buying again but I did get a couple of packages and I have purchased some cards with Ebay bucks.  It was only $1.62 but if you know me, I can stretch it out.

I’m going to start with a box of cards that I got from Jeff over at “2 by 3 Heroes”.  He’s been buying a bunch of those repack boxes which of course come with all kinds of cards that fit right into my vintage collection.  But you’ll see those tomorrow, because tonight you’ll see some of the what else he sent me.

2x3heroes02

This Minnie Minoso goes to help with trying to complete the 1961 Topps team set.  Which I only have a few cards for.

2x3heroes04

This 1960 team card goes for that years team set and again, I didn’t have much of that year as well.

Both of those cards were awesome vintage.  I love to receive anything vintage but it’s even better when they go towards helping complete White Sox team sets.

But Jeff managed to hit a player collection as well and it wasn’t even a White Sox card.

2x3heroes01

This 2013 Topps Allen & Ginter’s Tom Seaver goes towards the Tom Seaver collection.  When I pulled this out of the box, I had actually thought I had this one but apparently not.

Those are only 3 cards but he sent me a box full of stuff.  Come back tomorrow to check out the vintage collection cards.

Random PC Card #25

The collections have been randomed along with all my memorabilia and autographed cards.

Believe it or not, it is a coincidence that a Michigan auto came up next after I plugged mgoauction.com.  Maybe it was just a chance for me to plug them again.

Adrian Arrington – 2008 Topps Performance Highlights autograph #THAAA

I want to say I got this card from Dennis at “Too Many Manninghams” and “Too Many Verlanders”.  Granted, the odds are it is because I got most of my Michigan stuff from him.  I enjoyed this auto because it’s a player I’ve watched in the Maize and Blue.  I’ve been a Michigan fan for most my life but only got into football the last decade or so.

Be sure to click the banner below and check out some more great Michigan merchandise and help out some future Michigan students.

MGoAuctions

I was asked to plug an auction site and after checking it out, It’s definitely something I would like to help out.  After checking out mgoauction.com and reading what the funds were going for, I was all in.

Mgoauction raises money for 3 scholarships for the University of Michigan.  The Bernard “Pat” Maloy Cancer Scholarship, the Shelly Kovacs Scholarship and the KAS Governor’s Scholarships.  While I’m all for raising money for all 3 scholarships, the first one hits home with me.  I lost my father to cancer in 1981 which I’ve spoken about here.  But my sister-in-law battled breast cancer and while she beat it, she has some lasting effects from the chemo and radiation.  My grandfather has also battled cancer a few times and it has taken a toll on his as well.  There is also a classmate of mine and a friend from work all battling it as well.

Not to mention I’m always up for helping out some kids go to a better school, and what better school is there than the University of Michigan?  But the nice thing about this donation, you get something in return.  Check out the banner below to see just a small portion of items on the site.

Pat Maloy Flyer.7.24

That’s right, you can go and purchase autographed memorabilia or photos and help the kids out.  Get autographs from NFL players such as Ben Roethlisberger, Clay Matthews, Calvin Johnson, Mike Ditka, or Steven Jackson.  MLB players such as Matt Sherzer, Prince Fielder, Miguel Cabrera and Torii Hunter.  Or NBA players such as Bob Lanier, Chris Mullin and Dwight Howard.  All those professional players have autographed memorabilia listed and that doesn’t include all the Michigan alumni who have autographs listed.  Such as Michael Phelps, Barry Larkin, Chris Getz, Jim Abbott, Rich Hill, Zach Novak, Gary Grant, Jalen Rose, Juwon Howard, Will Campbell, Anthony Thomas, Anthony Carter, Brandon Graham, Braylon Edwards, Chad Henne, Brian Griese, Jake Long, Charles Woodson, Chris Perry, Dan Dierdorf, David Molk, David Terrell, Denard Robinson, Desmond Howard, Elvis Grbak, Jeff Backus, Jason Avant, Jim Harbaugh, John Navarre, LaMarr Woodley, Les Miles, Lloyd Carr, Mario Manningham, Marlin Jackson, Mike Hart, Mike Martin, Roy Roundtree, Steve Breaston, Tai Streets, Tshimanga Baikabutuka and Tyrone Wheatley.

Even if you don’t have a lot of money to spend, they have a $10 M bin, a $5 M bin and even a $1 M bin.  So please go and purchase something to help with scholarships to the University of Michigan

Even if your not a Michigan fan, I am, so feel free to buy me anything on the site and I’ll send you my address.

Click on the banner in the middle of this post, or go to mgoauction.com and check out the merchandise.  I will also leave a banner over to the right side if you ever forget where to go, just come over here and I’ll lead the way.  But hurry, because some of the auctions are ending soon.

Random PC Card #24

The collections have been randomed along with all my memorabilia and autographed cards.

page-seaver10b1

Tom Seaver – 2005 Upper Deck Sweet Spot #88

I know, I said we wouldn’t have another Seaver for awhile but I actually got a few cards added to my PC collections so I had to re-random.  The color at the bottom stands out too much with a black and white photo.  Maybe a color shot would have been better, I don’t know, I just know it stands out way too much.

Random PC Card #23

These will probably be about all I post for awhile due to financial issues but hopefully you’ll enjoy these.  The collections have been randomed along with all my memorabilia and autographed cards.

page-dravecky1b3

Dave Dravecky – 1987 Fleer #412

Our first Dravecky card.  From another set I probably completed when I was a kid.  1987 was the last year I collected as a kid and I had a crap load of them.  Topps, Fleer and Donruss.  I did like how Fleer lumped all the cards from the same team together.  It made it easier to keep track of team sets.

Feeding the urge

I’ve had such an urge to buy some cards.  But I still don’t foresee it in the budget.  I do have a little bit left on my COMC account but not enough to include shipping so I haven’t purchased anything.  I also just got my Ebay bucks, but again, hardly anything because I haven’t purchased much.  So instead of buying, I finally got around to making my have lists for all the additional players I’ve added to my collections.  I’m wondering why I bothered adding any players since I haven’t been purchasing anything but eventually I’ll have an extra buck or two.

So you can check out the Player Collections page as it is now updated.  The cards I have are just what I had laying around which is why a lot of the players only have a few cards.  They are all on Google documents and I made 1 page for all the players with less than 10 cards.

The White Sox want list page is also updated.  These are the team sets I’m trying to complete and also are all on Google Documents.

The Vintage have list is updated but I will be converting that to a Google document as well with more information then just the card #.

What does all this mean to you?  Not really anything because if you’re a regular follower, you would have also noticed I removed the trade page.  That’s because I’m not looking to trade as of right now.  I just don’t have anything to send out to trade with.

What does it mean for me?  Hopefully playing with my cards for a day will satisfy my urge to purchase cards.  So far so good, but I get the feeling that the need is going to be back soon.

Carlton Fisk – 1984 Topps (team leaders) #216
Our 2nd Carlton Fisk card, this one he shares with Richard Dotson.  I always liked these leaders cards and the 1984 Topps set was right in the middle of my collecting when I was a kid so I enjoy seeing those as well.
