Lotta Tier 3

We set up in Kalamazoo today and received a couple of visitors. Dennis of Too Many Verlanders and John of John's Big League Baseball Blog came in to visit us. Dennis saved some postage and brought me some cards which you will probably not see until next weekend since we are setting up at another show tomorrow so I won't have time until next weekend to get them logged and scanned. Kevin also gave me some cards to get through so I have plenty to do on my next day off.

John even got his wife to snap a pic of us.

It was a decent show, it was our first time there so we didn't have many expectations which is how we take any first time shows.

Today's post will be of the random variety and tier 3 came up.

I mentioned the quarter boxes that I hit in Michigan City, these 23 cards of the Kid are a product of that, lots of oddball stuff up there which was why I decided to go through it all.

I also picked this one up from my LCS while sorting. The new Donruss set has a bunch of my retired Tier 3 PC's, including this one.

More quarter box finds from Michigan City. These 10 of another HOF'er. You even get an 1981 Fleer card for the Vintage set (only need 19 more) and one White Sox card for that team collection. The Giants card is only my 3rd of the lefty in those team colors.

11 Ripken's from the aforementioned quarter box. Lots of those oddball create your own sets from the late 80's, early 90's. The good old days when unlicensed still had logos.

These 3 came from a sort of list players from my LCS, all HOF'ers are on the list of players to pull so I usually get some tier 3 cards. These 3 all came from the box I did the first weekend of the month. That bottom card is another one of those unlicensed make your own sets. You can also see Frank Thomas on it as well so that one goes towards the White Sox collection as well.

Last but not least, this relic of Cal was in that half off box at my LCS which I ended up getting for free for sorting for them. I'm pretty sure it's my first relic of his. 13 of these 15 cards put me at 950 cards of Ripken which is my highest count of PC players. I do have one non-player collection who has more.

These 2 I picked up in the sorting of list players. I found a number of those 2022 A&G's that I needed. 

This was the only quarter box card of Bench that I found in Michigan city.

These 2 were from the sorting of the list players. You see another 2022 A&G. I would have guessed I already had the 1987 look-a-like but I apparently didn't.

This was another card from the half off box. I knew my LCS was going to give me a good deal so I went ahead and through this is my stack even though it's a manufactured relic. I didn't think I'd get it free but that's even better.

These 2 chrome cards came from some sorting that Kevin was doing. I like them both as one is a vintage look-a-like and the other is a Stadium Club so there's a good chance it's a photograph you haven't seen before.

I actually paid for these 2 and no, they aren't reprints. I made it all the way through the Plymouth card show without looking at any cards and was thinking I was going to get out without spending anything. Josh, the show promoter, asked me if I saw the vintage I had on his table because he knows that I love it. Now I feel obligated so I go over there and end up spending $40. Not on just these 2, you'll see another one in this post and a bunch on my next vintage post.

These 5 were also quarter box finds from Michigan City. You can see I found a ton of cards for my PC's. These aren't all, I also found quite a few on a couple other PC's that you'll see later and some Sox cards.

I told you I picked up some of the 2023 Donruss in the sorting, this is another one. 

These both came from the other list sort. That is a 1980 Topps but that isn't a 1975 Topps. It's a 60 Years of Topps Original back.

This is a 1972 Topps (it's kind of sad that you even have to point it out with the millions of reprints out there). This was another card that was on the show promoter's table. You'll see the other 4 vintage on the vintage post and I also picked up a Sox auto of the next Sox post.

I know that's a lot of cards for 1 post but I figured I'd throw up all my hall of fame tier 3 collections. I'll have another tier 3 post but it'll be the non hall of famers.

Back at it

 Kevin (Sluggo) and I set up today in Michigan City today. We had an alright show. It's funny, because we did the first show there and there was only a few card dealers. It was mostly toys & comics and other stuff like that. Now, it's almost all card dealers, sports & pokemon. It's only been maybe 6 months since we did the first show.

We got there early, like we usually do, and once we were set up, I walked around a bit. This is the first show I've done in a month after doing them almost every weekend for about a year so I wanted to do some shopping without spending much money. I found some quarter boxes and better than that, they were sorting by player and they were all hall of famers. Some of my PC's fit right in so I thought I'd go through those players, grab a few cards and be done. The PC's that were in the box, I already had a lot of cards of each players because they were 80's and 90's players so I figured I wouldn't really find much.

Wrong!

I basically grabbed oddball stuff that I wasn't sure if I had it or not. Even if I thought it was a maybe, I was thinking, it's only a quarter, I'll take a chance. $43 later, I had my stack. Yikes! I ended up spending another $15 on a couple of cards at another deal who is actually local to us (Michigan City is about 45 minutes from us) so I got some work to do tomorrow.

I'll spend Sunday going through and logging those cards, plus a stack that Kevin gave me, plus some I picked up Friday at my LCS. Those come with a story as well but I'll leave that for the first post of those cards. Once I get them squared away tomorrow, I'll add them to the sorting process but today, you'll get some more of previous pick-ups.

I pulled these from the box of HOF'ers that I sorted for my LCS awhile ago. The 1980 is real so it also goes to the Vintage Collection, the 1975 is one of those Card Your Mom Threw Out but it's the original back version.

This is a 2022 Archives of Tom Terrific. It came from the same box as the Yastrzemski's. Seaver is one of my Tier 1 PC's so I'm always happy to add to his collection. I don't even mind his Mets cards because I was a fan of his before he played for the Sox.

The top card of Strawberry came from the HOF box as well. Obviously because of that other guy on it but I still needed it. It is from 1992 French's, which I assume is the Mustard company. The good old days when cards came with everything. The bottom card is from the sort after the list player box. I sorted a bunch of 2023 Topps cards which I already have the base cards that I needed so I only got a couple of inserts. This is one of them.

I also have a bunch more packs of cards to go through from my LCS to sort. I'll probably flip through those before I start logging in my new cards. I'm just hoping that I have time to get all of them done because Monday goes back to 10 hour days so I won't spend any more time down there working on my cards until next weekend and we have another show on Saturday so that already takes away one of my weekend days. If they make us stay at 40 hours then I will Friday off so that would be nice, except on the paycheck.

Great players at great prices

I have a few days without some birthday posts so you might get to see some more pick-ups for a few days. Unless I get lazy, which is always a possibility. Had some good sleep last night too so I'm rearing to go today. I couldn't tell you the last time I slept past 10. I must have needed it.

Today's post is one of my more popular collections because it tends to speak to more collectors than player or team specific ones.

I'll start off with this. Josh, the guy who gave me the 8000 count box of 1982 Topps and all those publications that I purchased, threw this in with the sell just because it fit with my vintage collection. It actually means quite a bit because 1987 was when I went nuts and purchased a ton of Topps. I remember having a 8 or 9 copies of some of the cards that I PC'd. It was also the last year that I really purchased as a kid, which is why my Vintage Collection stops at 1987.

I've already finished the set so I won't open it and I think it's a pretty cool add to the collection even if it isn't worth much.

I picked up these 2 cards for the 1978 set from that $1 box at the Fort Wayne card show. As I go back and post all these $1 box vintage cards I got, I realize just how good of a purchase that was.

These 2 cards give me 186 which bumps me just over the 25% completed mark.

I added these 2 to the 1977 set. You seen the Yaz on his PC post, it came from the $1 box in Fort Wayne. The Lou Brock I grabbed at the Shipshewana show from Joe who's another guy we set up with and I know.

These 2 cards give me 275 cards for that set for 41% complete.

Another PC pick up that also goes in the Vintage. I picked up this 1976 Schmidt. Another $1 box Ft. Wayne pick up.

This card gives me 359 cards of the 1976 set which puts me at 54% completed. Off the top of my head this is 1 of only 2 1970's set that I'm over half complete.

As you may have figured out, if it's a vintage card with a pretty good player on it, or team card, it came from the $1 box in Ft. Wayne. All 3 of these go to other collections as well, the team card to the team card collection and the Schmidt and Carlton are both PC's as well.

These 3 cards give me 142 cards of the 1975 set which is 21% completed.

The top card is a Ft. Wayne purchase as it's also a PC card. Not the greatest condition but I'll take it for a buck. The bottom card was from my last Sportlots shipment.

These 2 cards give me 313 cards for a 47% completion on the 1974 set. Almost another I can put at half way done.

I specifically went looking for some 1973's with my last Sportlots purchase. I like the few action shots in there, you don't see the Fregosi pose often, watching him probably fouling out.

These 8 cards give me 511 of that set which is good for 77% completed. Obviously, this is the other 70's set over 50% completed.

Both of these 1972's came from Ft. Wayne. The top card is another PC card of Seaver while the bottom card I kept because of Hank Aaron. When I say kept, I could have purchased a ton of his card but was trying to budget so I narrowed down that $1 box purchase to PC cards that also went to the vintage collection.

These 2 cards give me only 84 cards of this set which is only 10% completed. Just for kicks I went and looked to see how many Hank Aaron's I have in my Vintage Collection. The answer is 5 but all our leaders or special cards, none of his base, yet.

As I said above, all my $1 box Ft. Wayne purchases were PC and team cards. This is where we start hitting the team cards. I got the Seaver from the same seller but it wasn't in the $1 box, I dropped $5 on it but I couldn't pass it up as I'm sure I got a discount since I bought so much from him so it was under $5.

These 7 cards from the 1971 set put me at 127 cards for a 17% completion.

I picked up the top 2 team cards in Ft. Wayne and the bottom card from Sportlots. If I wanted to pick up any 2 team cards from that set it would be those 2. The Sox card for obvious reasons and the Mets card because when I collected as a kid I was a Mets fan and I had that card. It was an expensive card of the Miracle Mets back then.

These 3 cards give me 99 cards of the 1970 set for only 14% complete.

These were the oldest of the team cards I picked up in Ft. Wayne. A couple of 1966 cards for $1, I'll take it.

These 2 cards only give me 42 cards of that set which is only 7% complete.

I picked up these 4 cards from the 1960 set from Sportlots for under $.50 each a piece. My 1960 set is probably my furthest along for that decade but that's mainly because I have quite a few of the Sox cards from that set.

These 4 give me 76 cards of that set for a 13% completion. Just for fun I went and looked and 29 of those are White Sox cards.

That's right, I even found some cheap 1958 cards on Sportlots. I'll pick these up all day for under $.50 if I can find them. Wonder how the Guardians like that logo.

These 2 cards give me 24 from that set for a 5% completion.

This was a fun post, I always forget how much I love picking up cheap vintage cards. I tend to focus more on my PC stuff and just pick up vintage when I run across them. Maybe I should add some to my search on Sportlots and specifically look for some again.

Winna Winna

You got to see a rare occurrence the other day when I showed cards from a blogger other than Jeff or Dennis, today you'll get another. Nothing against bloggers not sending me cards, it's just I have very little to trade with so when people ask to trade, I tell them straight up, I just don't have anything to trade with. Some will send cards anyways knowing they won't get much, if anything, back. Brian, however, held a contest that I won on random and he threw in some extra's for me.

He sent over these 3 Sox cards along with a couple of PC players that have already been shown. Those 2 Chris Sale's give me 149 cards of him. I mentioned before when I showed another Sega card he sent me that I had never had any of those before he sent them. I only have 9 cards of Melky but he wasn't with us for very long. I just looked, he was with us 2 years, it didn't seem that long.

So what card did I win in the Save Second Base contest?

That, my friends, is a pretty cool card. It doesn't technically go into my collections but I don't care, it does now. Did you notice the serial #?

For those of you asking, I do have a few cards that I keep that aren't part of any collections but I like them. This is by far the better of any of those cards, but I do have some. This is my 6th card of Lou, but the others all go into collections. 4 from the Vintage collection, 1 card that he shares with Carl Yastrzemski and this card.
