Welcome

This blog is about sports cards. I tend to only purchase cheap items so don't come hear expecting to see big money cards. My teams collections are Chicago White Sox and Michigan Wolverines. I also have a bunch of player collections.

Fort Wayne Show

Need to get a quick post in to get caught up. Last weekend we were at the Fort Wayne show and I picked up a few things. I didn't really do much shopping around, these were more or less brought to me.

There's a dealer who's a friend of ours who sets up in the other room. He'll usually ask me to come watch his table so he can take a bathroom break, go smoke or just take a little time to shop for himself. He has a shop so he definitely wants to do some shopping to pick things up for that. He usually gives me cards or just discounts what I get since I usually get bored and start looking at what he has on his table. He had a couple of boxes so I hit that.

He had a cheap autos box where I found these. The McGrone was a cheapy, he had the Evans at $7 if I remember right. Both former Wolverines so I snagged them. It's my 4th card of Cameron but my 1st autograph. The Evans is my 2nd autograph but my 54th card of him.

I was really happy to see this card in there as I don't get many Michigan baseball cards (other than Cronenworth), let alone autographs. This is only my 5th card of Jordan but my 1st autograph.

I picked up all 3 of these for $8 total.

He also had a box of Vintage that I could have pulled a lot out of but I wasn't looking to spend too much so I came up with these 3 since they are all player collection as well.

It's hard to tell with the photo but that is a mini. I definitely wanted this one when I saw it. I still need the regular sized Schmidt from '75 but I wasn't going to pass this one up. This card gives me 359 of Mike.

He also had these 2 of Fisk that I needed. Another '75 and his '76. I love getting Vintage of guys I watched when I was a kid. These 2 Fisk give me 386 of him.

I paid $10 for these 3 cards.

We had another dealer friend of ours say he had a bunch of 5x7 cards that were serial numbered that he wanted to know if we wanted to look at. He pulled the Sox for me. I wanted them all as they were one's I didn't have but I narrowed down to these.

Remember these are all 5x7's but I don't know if you can read those serial numbers in the bottom left corner. I tried to get a closer pic of the serial numbers

They are all numbered to /10. I had trouble grabbing cards because there weren't many PC players and not even a lot of my favorite players so I grabbed all of them that were #'d 1/10 and a few others.

There was one PC guy and my most favorite player for the Sox so I definitely grabbed this one. It's my 761st card of Paulie.

Kevin grabbed a stack of Braves ones as well. The Braves had all kinds of "vintage" players unlike the Sox ones. so his stack was pretty healthy so he made a deal for them. I know the dealer was asking a buck a piece to us and Kevin got them cheaper than that but he never gave me a cost on what I owe so he must have gotten them cheap enough that he gave them to me.

I have one more post to get out which are cards I picked up at my LCS on Friday.

More list boxes

Nothing too exciting going on, just trying to get through the week and start my weekend. Saturday will be a busy day as we are doing a card show during the day. Then I'm going to the Michigan/Notre Dame hockey game and then come home and watch the Michigan/Iowa game. Hopefully, both will be Wolverine wins.

Today's post are the cards I sorted last week. If you remember from the post that I recorded what I do when I sort. I had a bag of cards to sort and then a bunch of list players, this time it was MLB.

The top 2 rows were all Topps Update which I didn't have any yet and also a Bowman Platinum which also just came out in the last few weeks or so.

I picked up all 3 of these for the Vintage collection. They are list players as Ted Simmons is a Hall of Famer (and former Wolverine) and Don Mattingly is on the list, probably because he should be a Hall of Famer.

This actually came from the bag of cards, but he's a hall of famer so it went to the list box and then sorted into my stack.

I added 13 more of Cal Jr, other than the 2023 Donruss, they are all from the 90's. These cards boost the Ripken collection to 974 cards, maybe I'll hit 1000 before the end of the year but that is closing in soon.

I also picked up 6 more of Schmidt, mostly look a likes and a couple of Stadium Club. These 6 give me 358 cards of Mike.

That's all of the Type 3 collection, on to Type 2.

This was also in the 2023 Update bag but he's a list player so it would have ended up here as well. If you remember, I just hit 100 cards with Dylan so this is number 101.

Another 2023 Donruss, this time of Fisk. I've picked up a bunch of these former player cards from 2023 Donruss.

I picked up this Optic of Eloy as well.

I picked up 3 more of Robert jr as well. That Bowman Platinum came from the bag of cards but again, he's a list player so I ended up with all 3. The top left card is one of those Clearly Donruss. These push me over the 200 mark of Luis by 1. These give me 201.

Busy weekend

After 4 days of birthday posts, I finally get a chance to post again. Albeit, it's only a few cards.

Friday night, myself, 2 cousins (Sluggo being one) and a nephew got free tickets (and parking pass) to the White Sox game. When I was offered, I immediately jumped on them because they were playing the Padres so I was hoping to watch Cronenworth, but I forgot he's been out with injury. If you're a Ted Lasso fan, I did get to see Coach Beard throw out the first pitch so there was that. We lost 3-2 but I got to see Dylan Cease pitch and Moncada hit a HR. Benintendi almost had a grand slam but it drifted foul. We still had a good time even though we got home around 1 am and Kevin and I had to get up early for a card show Saturday morning.

We set up at the South Bend show and I actually didn't come home with any cards. Although I did look at some vintage but I didn't buy any. I noticed a table a couple down from me that had some White Sox bobble heads but I didn't go look at them because people always want more than I'm willing to pay. When I went to the bathroom an hour or so later, I decided to walk by the table just to see who they have. As I walked up, there was a Konerko one sitting on the front and I grabbed it to look at. The customer standing next to me said "I'm getting ready to buy that," Oops! I told him my bad and set it down. Then as I was walking by the table of the dealer between ours and the bobble head dealer he showed me a Mark Buehrle one that he bought from him. I was bummed that I didn't get to either one but I was also thinking I probably wouldn't have paid that much anyways. Then the guy said, he couldn't pass it up for $5. I cussed him out. Lol. I told him I was mad at myself enough for not looking earlier than he had to tell me that I could have had them for $5. That's what I get for being cheap at that. I could have had bobble heads of my 2 favorite Sox players.

I did sort some cards for my LCS on Friday before heading out to the Sox/Padres game. I went through 10 opened blasters of 2021 Topps series II, I already have the team set so the only thing I was going to take home was inserts or parallels. Let's see what we got.

For the White Sox collection, I picked up this Madrigal rookie 1986 copy. I liked Madrigal and didn't like that he got traded. This is my 47th card of Nick and I'm pretty sure he only played with us for a year. I do tend to pick up his Sox stuff when I see it because as I said, I liked him.

For Tier 3, I grabbed this die-cut Mike Schmidt. He's been getting new cards more and more so I've been getting more. This is my 344th card of Schmidt.

I also got this 1965 look-a-like of Robert who is out with injury, not that that matters now. This is my 194th of him so I'm closing on that 200 card milestone.

Nothing too flashy but that catches me up with pick-ups other than the old random posts so I'll try to get some of those done so then I'll be caught up with everything new I've added.

LCS finds

If you've been around here, you know that my cousin and I do a little side work for my LCS. He buys all kinds of stuff that walks in the door and we help him sort it all. When we first started going in the shop, he had boxes all over. Under all his tables and piled in the corners. Now his shop looks pretty clean as far as the floor goes and he has told a bunch of people how much help we've been. He shows us that by giving us cards and great deals on the more expensive stuff. As an example, he had dupe Cronenworth autos and he gave them both to me for the price of 1 which I sent the other to Dennis.

I stopped by yesterday after work to drop off what I sorted last weekend and picked up some new stuff. He didn't give me a ton to do this weekend since I have 2 shows so today is the only day I would have to work on them. He has a few people who buys blasters, hangers and such who pull out one or two cards that they collect and they sell everything else back to him. So this morning, I went through 10 opened hanger boxes of 2022 Donruss. He lets me pull whatever I need for my collections, he knows if I find any high dollar (which I never do with the stuff I'm sorting) to let him know, other than that, he knows I have limited collections and that's all I take so he let's me take them.

I've sorted 2022 Donruss for him before so I had most everything as far as the base that I needed but while I was standing there talking to him, there was a stack of mini's sitting on his desk and I flipped through those and found a few for myself as well. Here's what I added to my PC's.

This was a nice find and it was actually on top of the stack of mini's which is the only reason I went through them because I hate mini's but I need them so what better way then free ones.

I don't add too many Konerko's often anymore since I have quite a few and he doesn't get a whole lot of hobby love anymore (not that he ever did) but he's my favorite Sox player of all-time so I grabbed it. It's actually the A&G back so I still need the regular mini. Plus I have to keep my hefty lead on TCDB.

I also found this regular back mini of Cal. I was hoping to find another one for Dennis but no such luck. I didn't even look to see if he needed it but it was free so I would have been able to take a chance.

Sadly, even though I'm slowly closing in on 1000 cards of Cal, I'm only ranked #46 on TCDB.

Another tier 3 PC guy with the black border version. I was glad to pull so many mini's of HOF'ers, you can't really complain about that.

Another Tier 1 guy that I don't add a ton to his collection. I found a black border mini on his desk and found an Orange Holo in the Donruss hangers I went through.

At one time, I was #1 on TCDB. I got an email from a guy saying how he figured he'd be #1 after he entered his and I ended up having a couple hundred more. He sent me a 1970 Topps Super and I sent him 20 or so cards he didn't have. A few months later I looked and he had blown past me. I've dropped another spot since then.

Also found this Orange holo of the former Wolverine, Jake Cronenworth. I love that there is a good Michigan guy in the bigs to collect again. Apparently Dennis does as well.

I'm thinking I'm going to start doing my posts like this again, just a pick-up of that day kind of thing so it's less posts and more cards posted at a time. I'll still have some random posts until I'm caught up and then go to strictly these kinds of posts and the birthday posts. I like the random posts but even with doing a few players on each posts, I get behind rather quickly. Probably because I have so many PC players with all the Michigan guys.

Schmidt with a side of Rice

Sluggo and I went over to our LCS and put in a little work sorting cards. I came home with a stack for myself as payment so I'll probably spend time tomorrow logging and scanning cards.

Today we got another tier 3 collection, or is it Vintage collection. Actually, it's both but it's only 1 card.

I grabbed this while sorting cards for Sluggo (I guess I have to say for who now). I was surprised I didn't already have it but I didn't. I know it's nothing fancy but it was a need regardless.

This is my 282nd card of the HOF 3rd baseman. Not really too far from 300. Hopefully by next year, hehe.

2 Phillies and a Met

I got a day off admist all the birthdays in July. There's only 10 but they are all bunched together in a couple of weeks so it seems like almost daily.

Today's post is another tier 3 collection that I was finishing up on Sportlots so there'll be a bunch of cards.

You can tell I was close to finishing because they are all newer cards. Everything above are all from Sportlots. I closed out my shopping spree with 40 cards, all of one of the greatest 3rd basemen in history.

I did manage to grab a couple of vintage Schmidt's as well at the Fort Wayne card show. Yep, you guessed it, in the vintage dollar box. I thought I already had the 1975 but luckily, I took the time to look it up anyways because I had the mini.

These 42 cards give me 281 cards of the hall of famer. 19 more cards and he'll become my 9th PC and 10th player that I have over 300 cards.

More to come

We play the Yankees tonight, best of 4 for the weekend. It'll be a good test on just how good we are. Right now anyways, because we still have a few starters on the IL that'll be back.

Another tier 3 collection so lots of cards and very little words.

We'll start off with a couple jumbo cards from 1984 & 1985.

1984.

1985.

1986.

1987.

1988.

1989.

1990-1991.

1994.

1995.

2000-2001.

2002-2003, 2005.

All of those came from the last Sportlots purchase. I'm surprised I didn't get very many later cards. I'm guessing that they are still in my box and will be in my next shipment.

I also picked up this in the dollar box at Shipshewana. It's another 2000 so still nothing newer.

These 71 cards put the Schmidt collection at 239 cards.

I'm down to 10 more posts left so I'll have to get more cards. You know, because that's the only reason I buy them is to make blog posts. I'll ship my latest Sportlots soon but Sluggo and I are talking about card shopping on Saturday. Then we're setting up at shows the next 2 Saturdays, plus the next Shipshewana show is on Memorial day at the end of the month. Lots of card shopping to come.
