Welcome

This blog is about sports cards. I tend to only purchase cheap items so don't come hear expecting to see big money cards. My teams collections are Chicago White Sox and Michigan Wolverines. I also have a bunch of player collections.

Wednesday Roll Cal

Today we have a Tier 3 player chosen by the random. Right now, Konerko, a tier 1 player is my highest player collection but once I get to tier 3 players when searching on Sportlots, I have a feeling this guy will go in the lead. He's going to be closing in after all the cards today. A lot of different sources on his cards.

These top 2 cards came from Sportlots. The McDonalds (Donruss) at the top, I grabbed from a seller that I didn't have 4 cards from yet. The same for the bottom card only he had a bunch of 2020 Stadium Club so I ended grabbing more than 4 as I grabbed a bunch of Sox and PC cards from that set.

These 2 were part of my payment from Sluggo for listing a bunch of his cards on Sportlots.

A couple of cool looking cards. The Die Cut Finest is really nice.

Some art cards from 3 different brands.

The Topps Fire is a great looking card and I hadn't seen the Star card at the bottom before. The last 3 pics of cards all came from the Diamond King. Thanks Kevin!

There were so many cards of Ripken in this package that I just threw them up there to get them scanned. Some of those I was surprised I didn't have.

I like the leaf in the top right and the Legends in the center left. I remember buying a bunch of that Legends set back in the day.

A bunch of horizontals, that Stadium Club photo is pretty awesome. That last card is kind of creepy, I'm going to say it's the scan because I don't remember it being that bad.

As you can see, lots of Ripken's in this post. Dennis of Too Many Verlanders sent the last 4 scans as he is a mutual collection of ours. We tend to swap Ripken's quite a bit.

These 39 cards put the Ripken collection at 659 cards. Cal is 3rd with my PC's but with all the cards that they put out of him, I'm sure he'll bump right over Larkin and Konerko for my top PC once I get to my tier 3 players on Sportlots and I'm not real far from doing so.

Completed team set

I got contacted a few weeks ago from Tony that said he had a few cards for me.  Turns out, Tony has a blog that he has started.  So after checking it out, and emailing back and forth, he still wanted to send me cards even though I told I may not be able to return the favor.  Not only did he send me some cards, but he sent everything I needed to complete my 1984 Topps Chicago White Sox team set.

hiatus-01

It’s my first completed team set in a long time.  Doesn’t help I don’t buy much for them but still Tony hooked me up.  I’m even going to go through the few cards I do have and hope I have some Milwaukee Brewers to send him.  I would think I’d have something he wants.  Be sure to check out Tony’s relatively new blog at “Off Hiatus Baseball Cards”.  He’s a couple of months in but still going strong.

Complete Team Sets–1976 Topps

Another vintage completion.

completed-76topps01

I like the red jerseys but I’m not in love with them.  I prefer to see the Chicago White Sox in black and white.

completed-76topps02

Beltin’ Bill Melton and Wilbur Wood.  Both vintage players I like.  Can’t say much about the look of this set.   Kind of hideous if you ask me.  I guess I can’t complain about the red since it was one of their colors that year, but the green?  And I don’t like the little logo guy in the bottom corner either.

completed-76topps03

I had to pick up a couple of cards from this set to complete it.  I do like the team card, I have always liked them.  They remind me of the team photos they’d send you when you sent the teams letters.  I used to send a letter to each team to get their fan packs.

Completed Team Sets–1975 Topps

Another vintage team set that I completed with the previous COMC purchase was this awesome set.

completed-75topps01

I had thought I finished this with the end of the year purchase in December but I accidently bought a mini instead of the regular sized card.

completed-75topps02

I really do hate all the oddball colors but yet I love the set for them.  I can’t understand it.  I kind of feel the same way about the 1976 Topps set as well.

completed-75topps03

I guess the advantage of being a White Sox fan is that there is rarely a high dollar card that you have to pick up.

completed-75topps04

Technically the leader and rookie cards aren’t part of the team set, but I’m throwing them in anyways.

Believe it or not, I still have a couple of Vintage Complete Sets to post.  So stay tuned because I have a few other packages from fellow bloggers to throw up as well.

Completed Team Sets–1986 Topps

completed-86topps01

I needed one card to complete this set and I picked it up on COMC.  I had a crap load of 1986 Topps back then.  Junk wax or not, I was a kid and cards were still affordable so I’m not sure I’d call them junk.  Lots of memories in those years.

completed-86topps02

Can’t say much for the photography, but check out that logo.  I know, most don’t like it, but I do.

completed-86topps03

Tom Seaver and Carlton Fisk though.  2 Hall of Famers in this team set.

completed-86topps04

And probably a future Hall of Famer manager in Tony LaRussa.  A lot of future White Sox staff as well, Ozzie Guillen, Harold Baines, Greg Walker to name a few.  I never minded this set, maybe because of the memories but I don’t think it’s that horrible looking.  I prefer my cards with a team logo on the front but with the huge lettering at top, I can forgive the oversight.

If you can look at the oversight that I have 2 Reid Nichols cards in there.  Oops.

Completed Team Set–1974 Topps

completed-74topps01

I completed this set before the end of the year but I’ve been a slacker for awhile.  I get such a satisfaction of finishing a vintage team set.  I finished 4 of them from the 70’s just before the end of the year with my black Friday purchases from COMC.

completed-74topps02

I can’t believe they followed up the 1973 Topps photography with these.  Only 3 action shots in the first 16 cards.

completed-74topps03

A couple more action shots.  These were odd years for the White Sox just because their uniforms really have nothing to do with their normal color scheme.  But I do enjoy them because they are a little different from the norm.

completed-74topps04

I went ahead and threw the Ron Santo traded and a rookie pitchers card with Ken Frailing from the Sox on it even though they may not be technically part of the team set.

Completed Team Sets–1987 Donruss

team-87donruss01

These are supposed to be in numerical order but when I put in the scanner, I always forget to put them the other way around.

team-87donruss02

I don’t mind this classic Donruss design.  And as much as I hate to admit it, these are some of my favorite Sox uniforms.

team-87donruss03

A lot of these players are still with the organization or have been recently.  Harold Baines, Greg Walker, Joe Cowley, Ozzie Guillen.  Bobby Thigpen has some saves records, Steve Carlton was an all-time great lefty.  Steve Lyons is famous for pulling his pants down on first base.

I actually picked up this set for $.99 on Ebay.  I was already picking up a bunch of singles for my Tom Seaver collection and my White Sox collection so I purchased this and another team set for $.99 each.

Cheap Ebay Pick-up

ebay09

  • 1974 Topps 9 card lot ($1.71/shipped)

I won 4 of these vintage lots at $1 shipping for the first one and $.50 for the next 3.  So I divided the $2.50 shipping into 4 and added it to the price I paid for each lot.  So it came to $.63 per lot.  This was a 9 card lot but I only needed 5 of them, so divided by 5 instead of 9, it came to $.34/card.
