Vacation Pick-Ups #3–1969-1964

Let’s just jump right into it.

3, that’s right, 3 cards from the 1969 Topps set.  I had so much fun picking up all these vintage.

3 more 1968 Topps, including the rookie stars card.

A 1967 Topps Gary Peters who was a pretty good pitcher for us.  I already have a handful of 1967’s that I picked up at a card show awhile back so I liked adding this one as well.

3 1965 Topps cards including a Hoyt Wilhelm and a team card (I like the team cards).

I’ll even throw up a couple of this years Topps Heritage set, the 1964’s.  One of them even has an All-Star Rookie trophy, you know Topps hit the nail on the head with all those predictions.

Vacation Pick-Ups #2–1970’s

I promised you some vintage today so we’ll pump out this post sponsored by the 1970’s.

I found one card from the 1977 set that I needed.  I believe this was one of the $.20 cards.

I already completed my 1975 Topps set but since this isn’t technically part of the team set, I didn’t have it yet.  Dick Allen is cool enough, but it has Johnny Bench too.  Makes that card that much sweeter.

2 of 3 of these 1972’s will go towards the team set.  But again, another White Sox card with Norm Cash and Reggie Jackson on it.  Not to mention the White Sox player is Bill Melton, whom I’ve considered starting a player collection of just because I like him on the pre and post game shows before and after the Chicago White Sox games.

5 more 1971 cards for the team set.  Including a Wilbur Wood and the team card.  That brings that team set down to needing 11 cards which isn’t a lot when it comes to the team sets in the 1970’s.  Except almost half of those are short prints, yikes.

I even picked up one 1970 card which seem to be somewhat hard for me to come by.  I just don’t run into that many of them.

Tomorrow, we’ll start with the 1960’s, only I have to divide it up into 2 posts because I have that many of them.  And yes, I’ll have a post for the 1950’s too.  Stay Tuned.

Vacation Pick-Ups #1

I’m going to start off with some of the newer pick-ups and work to the better stuff.

Picked up the top 3 for $.20/each and the bottom 2 came from Sluggo.  Always love the Xfractors and check out the black border Omar Vizquel.  Those are numbered to /99 but you have to love black border White Sox cards.

Most (if not all) came for $.20 each.  Nothing extremely exciting but I needed all of these for the White Sox Collection.

Here are a few oddball cards that I picked up at the same price.  You gotta love the Michael Jordan at the top and the minor league Frank Thomas at the bottom left.

I also picked up these 3 80’s cards but all great White Sox players.  I know, I promised you great cards in these Vacation pick-up posts but come back tomorrow for some 70’s pick-ups.  Ok, ok.  I’ll show you some vintage.

Look at those!  Ok, I can’t do that to you.  These are reprints that were put out in the early 90’s (I think) by Red Heart Dog Food.  But I still think they are cool.  These are glossy though, not that I have a problem with that, but it doesn’t go well with vintage look-a-likes.

Vacation pick-up, the prequel

I don’t remember if I mentioned it on this blog or not, but a couple of weekends ago I was in Bristol, VA to visit the inlaws.  Since I wasn’t home, where there are no card shops, I decided to Google if there were any there and I found one.  So on Friday, I hit that shop and spent about an hour in there and picked up a few things.  I got a box of pages for my stepdad who showed me his cards recently and he had the old pages that stick together so I told him he needed to replace those.  I went through a box of relics that were 4/$10 and I found 4 of those.  Then as I was walking around the store, I ran across these

That’s 5 1987 Topps rack packs and 1 1987 Donruss.  They were 6/$5 and I decided what the hell and picked these up for the vintage collection.  I didn’t get anything awe inspiring, they are 1987 after all, but it was a big boost to the 1987 Topps set.  Then as I was checking out, he had a small box of 1954 Bowman at the register.  I thumbed through those and found a White Sox card and grabbed it.  You’ll see that later.

Then on Saturday, I drove down to see my cousin (Sluggo) who lives in the Asheville, North Carolina area who, as you know, I have traded with so he’s a collector as well.  Although he has a relatively small collection for himself but he buys and sells at card shows which they have in his area every other weekend.  The weekend I went down was the off weekend from the card show but he was going to take me a few places.

First we headed off to South Carolina to a flea market where a friend of his sells.  We spent a couple of hours there and I got some great stuff.  He had boxes and boxes of stuff.  First I went through a rookie box at 5/$1 and found a few cards.  Then I went through relics & auto’s box and pulled multiple Paul Konerko autographs.  I knew I probably didn’t want to spend all my money on those but I set them aside just in case.  Then I asked him about vintage.  He had 5 boxes of vintage and I mean 1950’s and 1960’s vintage.  I went through those and ended up with a huge stack of cards.  First, I put back the Konerko auto’s.  Then I pulled out my phone and pulled up my want lists (got to love the Google Drive app) and started going through them.  I had so many cards that I was really hoping I had a lot of them already.  After getting through all of them, I still had a pretty good stack but I said screw it and bought the rest of them.

After there, we headed home but took an alternate route to go through Hendersonville and stop at a card shop out in the middle of nowhere.  A funny old man owned it and we spent a couple of hours there.  I mainly browsed his 5/$1 books.  I picked up a pretty healthy stack there, it was mainly 1990’s to newer stuff.  Then I went to get my phone out to check my want lists, and no reception.  I think he planned it that way just so I’d have to buy them all.  Well, it worked because I did.  I also picked up 3 relic cards at $2/each.

Then we headed back to his house and he had a few cards for me as well.  It was really a great day, I really enjoyed hanging out with people and talking about cards all day.  I wish there were decent shops around here that I could do that or at least a show once in awhile.  All in all, I spent a little over $100, which for me, is a lot.

Now your asking why I didn’t show any of these single card purchases.  Because I plan on showing them in the coming week so you’ll have to wait.  I’ll go ahead and post this today, even though I already posted once (I like to keep it to once a day) so I can start showing all the great stuff starting tomorrow.  Make sure you come back.

Cards from Baseball Dad

Baseball Dad/Dave from “Indians Baseball Cards” opened a pack a day last year from opening day till the end of the season plus some bonus packs.  You were able to claim a team or players and when they were pulled, you got the cards.  All he asked in return was to send him some cards in a trade or paypal him some money.  I don’t have much of anything to trade so I sent him some money a few days ago.  Let’s check out what I got.

First off, the odd shaped cards.  The Bobby Thigpen is a normal sized card.  You can see the 1986 Donruss cards are huge in comparison, I didn’t know they came that size until I saw Dave opening them.  And then the pop-up is from 1985 Donruss (I think).  I do remember having some of those back then so it wasn’t new to me.

All of these 1990’s cards are new to the White Sox collection.

As well as these from the 2000’s.  Nothing terribly exciting but I needed all of them so it’s still greatly appreciated.
