Scary Moment

Had a scary moment this morning. I was putting away the cards my cousin sent me and as I was flipping through my Carlton Fisk cards (in binders) to get to the last page, when I noticed something. What it looked like was the page had melted around the card, like when you put the blow dryer on plastic to make the plastic seal around the item. I tried pulling out the cards and they were stuck. I got out which ones I could, then started checking other pages. All in all, it effected 3 or 4 pages. I had to throw out 16 cards in all but what I can't figure out is, there was what looked to be mold on a couple of the cards. A few pages in the middle of a book with 40-50 pages in it got wet, sitting on a desk in my finished basement. There is absolutely no water anywhere around my card books, no wet spots on the ceiling, nothing on the walls, no water anywhere.

I ended up searching all my books, page by page and I only found one more instance of the page looking the same but not nearly as bad and I didn't lose any of the cards. This book was all the way on the other side of my desk, nowhere near the first book.

What scared me at first is I didn't know how many cards, or if all my books were effected. Also, the first card I noticed that was definitely damaged was this,

My first thought was crap, one of the high dollar cards from the 1973 set, a Fisk rookie. Since then I have learned that it can be had for a few bucks and that it's technically not the rookie but I didn't know that at the time and I was annoyed. I sat down at my laptop and was logging off the cards that I was throwing out and this card was 1 of 2 (the other was behind this one) that I couldn't even get out of the page. So I went to look at the 1973's and it showed I didn't even have this card. After I looked a little further, it was actually this card.

So I panicked for nothing, for one, it wasn't as much of a high dollar card (although a few dollars is for me) and it wasn't even the card that I thought it might be. All the cards I lost are fairly easily replaceable so not a big deal now but it is still a mystery to how it all happened.

Shoeless Friday

I'm still waiting on my last Ebay package, if I don't get it tomorrow, then I'll start the process of getting a refund and a sportslots seller can have my money. I purchased another 20 something cards today and had them sent to my box. After it gets there, I'll have 4 packages there. I think I'm going to have it ship next week so I'll probably add another package or so to it.

As I mentioned in my last post, I'm going to show some cards that my cousin sent me. I planned on posting a few times a week but I'm so old now that I usually nap after work which leaves me less time to work on cards. I really should go to bed earlier so I don't need the naps.

Here's the other player collection that he has probably about doubled with his last 2 packages.

These Panini Diamond Kings are kind of tough sometimes to figure out what year it is since they've used the same photo multiple times. I believe this is from 2017.

Everything else left of Shoeless Joe are all 2019 Panini. This one is from the Leather & Lumber set. I like it, it's different and it's a die cut.

This one is from the Diamond Kings set but it's an insert set labeled 1919.

These last 2 are from the Joe Jackson insert set, also part of the Diamond Kings set. There are 5 total cards, including the checklist in this set, Sluggo sent me the other 3 in his last package so I now have the final 2 to the insert set.

These 5 cards put the Shoeless Joe Jackson Collection at 22 cards. It was only at 15 cards this year until the last couple of months. I only picked up 1 or 2 cards every year since 2013 until this year where I've gotten 8 of them, 7 came from  Sluggo in his last 2 packages.

A couple for Sunday

Since I only have one (hopefully) more package coming from Ebay before I'm officially through with them and I chose the Sportslots box route on my shipping from Sportslots so I won't get those for awhile, I thought I'd spread out some cards that my cousin sent me. He sent me about 100 cards but I only needed 1/4 of them between already having the rest and he just sent a bunch of dupes. For the most part, they'll be by player since I got a few cards of most of the players. I'll start off with a player collection.

This 2019 card of Fisk is my first of his 2019 cards. It's a 1984 Topps insert, but I noticed the photo was different so I went and looked and it is, he also didn't have an all-star card so it's a totally new card which is even better.

He also sent me this sticker back from 1990 Topps Stickers. Nothing too fancy but I do remember these from when I collected as a kid.

These 2 cards put me at 170 cards of Fisk.

Back from AA

I went to the Big House in Ann Arbor today but I'm not going to talk about that mess. I don't want to relive that embarrassment. I did come home to one more envelope from an Ebay seller, I have one more to go but it's overdue so we'll see what happens there. I just got a refund from another one that never shipped. This current guy has some feedback that says he's slow to ship so that's what I'm hoping.

I got 2 cards from this seller.

Another Big Hurt in the collection, this is my 431st card of his and I grabbed this one for $.25/shipped. Frank is my 3rd highest amount of card per players but he's not a player collection like my top 2. At the rate I pick his up, I wouldn't  be surprised if he passes the top 2 sometime next year.

I also picked up another Michael Kopech card. His amount of cards keep moving on up, it's now at 27 cards. I picked this up for $.36/shipped. Have to get them all before he comes back from his Tommy John and people outside of Chicago figure out who he is. At least, who I'm hoping he will be.

I ordered my first stuff off Sportslots. So far, I've been finding sellers who offer free shipping to the Sportslots Box and go through each of my player collections and select the cheapest and oldest card I don't have. I select 3 for each collection until I have a total around $5 and then pay and have it shipped to the box. I'll stick with $5 a week for now and I haven't decided when I'm going to ship them to myself. I haven't found a way to save any sellers yet so I might just have to make a bookmark of each sellers page. I also haven't figured out if there is a way to search by cards by team because when I put a team name in the search bar, all I get are the actual team cards and not individual cards from each team.

3 Michigan Men

I got a couple more envelopes today with 4 cards, although 1 of them doesn't fit into any other of my collections. I purchased 1 in a lot of 2 but I only needed the 1. All 3 of the remaining cards are all football and all former Wolverines but only 1 actually goes in the Michigan Collection.

It's fitting that I get a Taylor Lewan card considering he's been hanging over my desk at work all this month, on my Michigan calendar. I've been telling everyone a story I have with him. They used to do a fan appreciation day on a Saturday before the season and you could get autographs. The players would sit behind the concession stands and you can walk up and get autos. My daughter and I were next in line for his autograph when he told the person in front of me "just a second" and he got up and came out and hugged someone behind us. That's not the story I tell though. I'm 6'3" and 280 lbs. and when he walked past me he was enormous. He towered over me. I've since looked at his height (6'7" and 309 lbs.) but before then, I never expected some of those players to be that huge. Anyways, this is the card I picked up in a 2 card lot with another Tennessee Titan player. I only paid $.19/shipped for them and it's my 19th card of his.

I picked this card up of Shoelace from the same seller as above. It's my 48th card of Denard and I grabbed it for $.24/shipped.

I also picked up my 3rd David Long card. I always have to be careful bidding on his cards because there is another player with the same name that came out of college and went to the pros in the same draft. It makes it easier when he's pictured in the maize and blue. I got this autograph for $2.41/shipped.
