Welcome

This blog is about sports cards. I tend to only purchase cheap items so don't come hear expecting to see big money cards. My teams collections are Chicago White Sox and Michigan Wolverines. I also have a bunch of player collections.

Cheaper Than Stamps #7

This is a series where I show off cards I need for my PC’s that I pick up on Ebay for cheaper than a stamp.  My maximum I spend on these cards is actually $.30 so I get them quite a bit cheaper than a stamp.

ebay24

2012 Topps Archives #88

See, I can get newer cards for cheap too.  A lot of my Cheaper Than Stamps have been junk wax era or reprints.  I picked this one up for the Mike Schmidt Collection for only $.27.  The Schmidt collection was one of my smaller ones so it works for me.

ebay11

1989 Donruss #193

Ok, so most of them are junk wax but I still only paid $.29 for this one as well.

Shoeless Joe Jackson – 1982 TCMA Greatest Hitters #16

I actually picked this up in a lot of 8 cards and I still only paid $.15.  The other cards were like the above as in reprints and such but had Roger Hornsby, Babe Ruth, Whitey Ford, Lou Gehrig, Cy Young, Honus Wagner and Ted Williams.  Yep, all that for a whopping $.15.

Cal Ripken jr – 1989 Topps #250

Another Cal jr card I got on the cheap.  I’ve picked up quite a few of his cards since I started this series.  I got this one for $.21.  I’d like to say I got it because he listed it as a 1998 Topps, but I’m pretty sure being a 1989 played a big thing in that cost.

Paul Konerko – 2007 Fleer Ultra #35

Paulie! Paulie! Paulie!  It’s up in the air on whether Paul Konerko will come back to the Chicago White Sox.  I’m hoping they sign him for another year and let him finish his career as a south sider.  If they don’t, I think he may retire.

Cheaper Than Stamps #4

Just a quick post today to show off my latest cheap ebay pick-up.  This one goes to the Hoyt Wilhelm collection.

ebay21

2013 Panini Cooperstown #67

I picked this up for $.25.  It was nice to run into this card because I don’t normally see any Hoyt Wilhelm cards on the cheap.  Pretty much this one because they usually start too high.

This Week on MSO

I will recap the pictures that I post on My Sports Obsession Tumblr page.  It is a variety of sports pictures and videos from vintage to current.  Of course, some days have more Chicago White Sox, Michigan Wolverines and Indianapolis Colts but there are a lot of other stuff mixed in.

It seems I ran into a bunch of Derrick Rose pics and gifs.  Probably because it was opening week for NBA.  But there are a few vintage pics in there as well.

Repacks

With the coaxing of Jeff from “2 by 3 heroes” I picked up a couple of those repack packages from Target.  He sent me a bunch of cards for my Vintage collection that he said he picked up in some repack packages.  I don’t know if I bought the same ones he did because I didn’t get as old of cards as he did but I did still get cards for my collections.  The ones I got were 100 cards for $3.99.  Let’s check out what I got for the Vintage collection first.

target02

Only my 2nd 1981 Fleer.  If I had to guess, the first one came from Jeff.

target03

My first 1982 Fleer.  I so love seeing these sets from my childhood again.

target04

I got 3 cards from the 1983 Topps set.  I actually have 26 from this set but I’m still a long way from this set.

target05

Here’s where I hit the jackpot, I got 13 cards from the 1984 Topps.  That gives me an even 50 for that set.

target06

2 cards from the 1985 set giving me 36 for the set.  Now that I’m typing out these, my vintage collection sounds kind of pathetic when I throw out the amounts.

target07

I managed to 3 different Pittsburgh Pirates cards from the 1987 Topps set.  But at least with this set, it gives me a total 276 cards.  You can always count on the wood bordered to make you feel better about your counts.

target08

And last but not least (for the vintage collection) I grabbed 4 1987 Donruss.  Which gives me 5 for that set.  I’m guessing the other one also probably came in from Jeff.

I expected to fill in some gaps in my Vintage collection, but what I didn’t expect was to pull some for my other collections.  Like these.

target09

I also actually pulled 2 cards for my White Sox collection.  With this 1984 Topps Vance Law and a 1991 Upper Deck Melido Perez.  I really figured I’d get shut out on White Sox cards just because the odds weren’t in my favor.  Although the nice thing about being a Sox fan is the majority of their cards or cheap, so maybe there is a better chance of hitting these.

But wait, there’s more.

target01

That’s right, I actually pulled 2 cards for my Barry Larkin collection.  A 1994 Upper Deck Collector’s Choice and a 2003 Upper Deck.  This was one of my smallest collections to date with only 5 cards now so I was definitely happy to pull a couple of Larkin’s.

Wasn’t as great as I had hoped money wise, I had bought 2 of those packages so all that for $8 sucked but technically, it equals out to just under $.23 a card so it does fall in my cheap ebay purchase parameters so I guess I can justify more purchases.  Problem is, I rarely go to Target when I have a Walmart in walking distance, as in, next door.

Random PC Card #28

The collections have been randomed along with all my memorabilia and autographed cards.

Billy Williams – 1961 Topps #141

Our second Billy Williams card in the Random PC posts.  It looks like we’ll have the start of his career, this is his rookie card.  It’s certainly not mint but that’s what makes it a beautiful card.  It’s been well loved, and as it is currently in my collection it is continuing to be well loved.

Cheaper Than Stamps #3

I’ve been amazed at the Cal Ripken jr cards that I’ve picked up on the cheap.  So many, so quick, that I picked up duplicates without realizing it.  I thought I’d be able to pick up some guys like Mark Buehrle, Joe Crede, Chris Getz or even some Ryan Zimmerman cheap but it seems like I’m getting hall of famers instead.  Of course, it’s probably because they have cards in the junk wax era.  Let’s take a look.

ebay02

1990 Topps (record breaker) #8

Like I said, junk wax era.  But then again, I only paid $.10 so I can’t complain.

ebay04

1992 Donruss (All-Star) #22

I paid more than the first card, but still only $.19 so again, no complaints here.

ebay05
1995 Star Cal Ripken 80 #77 & 1991 Donruss (All-Star) #52

These actually came in a 5 card lot that I won’t for $.54 so I though I was getting a great deal but come to find out, the other 3 cards I got in other lots that I won.  But minus the 3 cards, I still only paid $.27 each.

ebay07
1988 Donruss (Ripken baseball family) #625 & 1988 Donruss #171

This was originally a 3 card lot, but again, I had won the other 1 in another lot.  The 2 cards above I won duplicates of in other lots.  I didn’t do a very good job of checking the cards before I started bidding but once again, I got the whole lot for $.54.  So even minus the duplicate, I still only paid $.27 each, that’s a lot for some 1988 Donruss but not bad for a 3 card lot.

ebay06

2010 Topps t206 #84 & 1995 Star Cal Ripken 80 #43
1987 M&M’s #13 & 1990 Donruss MVP #BC-18

This was a 6 card lot, it was supposed to be all Ripken’s but somehow he put an Andruw Jones card mixed in.  It was even in the photo on ebay and I still didn’t catch it.  The other one was a duplicate I won in another lot, I know, again.  But I won the lot of 6 for $.71 so even cutting it down to 4, I still got each card at just under $.18 each.

ebay03
1992 Score Proctor & Gamble #5, 1989 Donruss MVP #BC-15 & 1989 Topps #250
1988 Donruss (team leaders) #51, 1994 Diamond Sports Memorabilia #23 & 1990 Topps All-Star Glossy #16

This 6 card lot, the original purchased lot I got for a great price as well.  I got all 6 of these cards for $.71 which is just under $.12 each.
So for this post, I got 16 Hall of Famer Cal Ripken cards for an average of at $.17 each, granted some are junk wax but still.  I’ve boosted my Cal Ripken collection by 16 cards by spending less than $3.

Cheaper Than Stamps #2

I’ve gotten some more cards in the mail from Ebay.  One of the newest collections that I’ve started is the Michael Jordan collection which when I started it, I was going to only collect him in Chicago White Sox uniforms.  When I started searching his cards and seeing all the MJ cards with the Chicago Bulls, I decided that I would collect all his cards because I was a huge Bulls fan when he played as well.  Besides, it’s not like I expect to ever have all his cards and with what I’m picking up now, I’m getting them cheap.  Let’s take a look.
ebay01
2003 Upper Deck Magazine #UD8 & 1998 Sports Weekly Promo #23
They aren’t cards from packs but they are cards.  I picked them both up from the same seller so at least he made a little bit of money because he was able to ship them in the same package.  But I did only pay $.25 a piece for them so his profit was only $.03 not including the price of the envelope.
