Welcome

This blog is about sports cards. I tend to only purchase cheap items so don't come hear expecting to see big money cards. My teams collections are Chicago White Sox and Michigan Wolverines. I also have a bunch of player collections.

Sweet vintage from Josh

I sent Josh over at “Royals and Randoms” a few Royals cards in my giveaway.  I didn’t have much left because of trades.  But apparently I had enough to please him because he sent this well loved card.

trade-joshroyalsrandom

I don’t care that it’s well loved, it’s still going to my Luis Aparicio Collection.  I loved it as soon as I saw it.  Thanks Josh, it wasn’t necessary but definitely appreciated.  Be sure to check his blog out at “Royals and Randoms”.

1968 Topps – Joe Horlen

Cost = $.99

I haven’t researched Joe Horlen but I know he’s on a few league leader cards I have.  I remember him being 2nd in Cy Young voting one year.  But none of that matters because it goes to my team set.

Trade with the Cynical Buddha

Cynical Buddha from “Collector’s Crack” contacted me about a card I had won in a contest from “Baseball Cards, Sports and Life”.  Here’s the card, he wanted.

contestwin-dougmaguffie

So I sent that away to him along with some Brewers and he sent me these.

trade-cynicalbuddha03

A bunch of 1996 and 1997 fleer, all new to the White Sox Collection.  Along with these bonus cards.

trade-cynicalbuddha01

A numbered Paul Konerko, I think I may have seen these before, but I know I didn’t have any.  And along with that he sent this.

trade-cynicalbuddha02

Love this card, I have other Chris Sale auto’s but I didn’t have this one.

Thanks for the cards Mark, check out Cynical Buddha’s blog over at “Collector’s Crack”.

Purchase from JABO

Kyle over at “JABO’s” opened up a box of 1982 Donruss and offered up teams at $5 a team including shipping.  I only had 3 to begin with so I jumped on it.

purchase-jabo01

18 new cards to my collection.  Not quite a team set but pretty close.  But if you’ve dealt with Kyle before, you always know your going to get some extra cards.

purchase-jabo02

Steve Carlton, Bo Jackson and Frank Thomas, all 3 new to the White Sox collection.

purchase-jabo03

And he threw in a Tom Seaver for the Tom Seaver collection.  Thanks Kyle, as always, great dealing with you.

Trade with Dennis

Dennis, as most of you know, is an awesome trader.  But he’s a lopsided trader.  He makes you feel bad because he sends you so many cards that you can’t keep up with them.  But no worries, because Dennis is cool like that.

trade-dennis01

I love this card.  Even though I’m not a fan of manufactured patches, I can still give some love when they are done right.  And that usually involves the team logo in the patch.

trade-dennis02

And as mentioned in an earlier post.  Dennis asked if I needed this Archive card, which I did.  I had one for the Konerko collection but needed one for the White Sox Collection.

And the reason he sent the package.

trade-dennis

Now if you missed my previous post, Dennis sent me this card.  And now he follows up with these 4 cards.  I love Dennis, I’m thinking about moving up to A2 so he can take care of me.  Just kidding of course, but I do love the cards he grabs for me.  For the record, these are the base cards I have from Billy Williams playing days.

  • 1961 (from Dennis)
  • 1963 (from Dennis)
  • 1964 (from Dennis)
  • 1965 (from Dennis)
  • 1967 (from Dennis)
  • 1971 (from Greg)
  • 1973 Topps (from me)

So basically, the vintage part of my Billy Williams collection wouldn’t be crap without traders, especially Dennis.  The only reason I have the 1973 is because I found it running across ebay for 1973’s for the set.

Be sure to check him out at “Too Many Verlanders” and over at “Too Many Manninghams” where he has a slacker guest contributor.  Believe me, you want Dennis to be a connection to your collection.

Thanks again, brother.  Maybe I’ll hit you up in A2 for Fan Appreciation Day this year with a stack to make up for all this love.

Bill Melton – 1969 Topps

Cost = $.99

I know, I know.  You got all excited when I said wait until the next one.  But I like “Beltin” Bill Melton.  And it’s his rookie card.  I didn’t realize that until I went to put this post together.  I’ve gradually increased his vintage base cards this year.  I now have his. 1969, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976.  The only one I need from his White Sox days is the 1970.

Guess the auto?

Thomas is the man.  He is a generous guy and really likes to blog as he uses a bunch of different media to post his cards.  Blogger, Tumblr, Instagram and others.  Those are the 3 I follow because those are 3 that I use.  Anyways, we met on Tumblr, even if you don’t want to set up an account of your own, there are a few bloggers posting their card collections over there.  I post all kinds of sports pictures as well as my cards.  With a smattering of Michigan, White Sox and Colts stuff.  All at My Sports Obsession Tumblr.  I know Canadian Cardboard is over there as well as Ryan from RGB Cards.   Plus there’s a few sites that post random baseball cards throughout the day.  If your interested in some of those, I can get you the links.

This post is for mysportsobsession. It took me up until last year to get this in person autograph. No COA because I don’t plan to sell it. It’s truly an iconic item in my collection for me. For those who don’t know, it is autographed by Frank Thomas.(Taken with Instagram)But back to Thomas.  I don’t even remember how we got started talking, but we comment here and there now.  Or like Instagram posts.  Anyways, he posted an autographed ball on his Tumblr just so I could see it.  Then he emailed me and told me he had a card with him that day as well and that I could have it.  See what I mean about generous.  Well, I got the card in the mail yesterday and got out the scanner today.  Do you recognize the signature?  Probably not, but the inscribed MVP years might give it away.  Or maybe you will recognize it on this.

free-cardboardaddiction

Is that freaking awesome or what.  My first auto of Frank Thomas, and probably my last at what his certified ones go for.   Remember, I’m cheap.  A big shout out to Thomas for this awesome card.  Or mad props to my homey, if that’s more your language.  Go check out “My Cardboard Addiction” and bookmark it and add it to your blogrolls.  While his PC cards are pretty cool, I like his Funny Card Series.  Go check him out, and thanks Thomas, I can’t express how much this card means to my collection.

Trade with the Dutch Card Guy

The Dutch Card Guy asked for some cards in my giveaway which I eventually sent him.  He responded even before he got my end with a huge package.  These are just some of the highlights.

trade-dutchcardguy01

My first Octavio Dotel relic.  A numbered Jermaine Dye.  I don’t even know what the Harold Baines is and a red (not orange, like it looks) parallel of Gregory Infante.

The Dotel relic is numbered to /99.  It was the 2nd to last card made, being as it’s numbered 98/99.  You can never go wrong with relics or autos.  Not a big fan of the Co-Signers cards, I’m not sure why.  I have others but this one was new, and numbered.  Like I said above, I don’t know what the Baines is but I really like that card.  What you can’t see is that it’s framed like the Masterpieces are.  And like some of you, I really like the colored borders.  I hate that I have to collect them all, but I like the looks of them.

And like I said, these are the highlights.  He sent me 4 team bags full of cards which 3/4 of them were new to me.  Be sure to hit up The Dutch Card Guy and check out his blog.

Local news has gone viral

This is a reprint off my other blog “Random Thoughts From A Random Guy” but it makes fun of a school that I enjoy making fun of.  Mainly their sports program, so there, it involves sports.

Our local news has gone viral.

This would be Maureen McFadden.  Trevor and I met her when we did the scout trip to the studio.  As a matter of fact, do you remember this picture?

That would be Terry McFadden, Maureen’s brother, whom we also met.  Which might be obvious, since I’m over his left shoulder and Trevor is over his right one.

And for the record, if you will notice the call letters of the station.  Does anybody know what the NDU stands for?  Anybody?

I’ll give you a hint, it’s by the same geniuses that gave us this.

You got it!  Notre Dame University.  It’s nice to see their pride in education showing up on the internet.

Box Break from Colby

Cardboard Collections” had one of his affordable box breaks a little while back.  I got in on it because the boxes he was breaking, I had very little to none of any of them.  It was an all Donruss box break.  He broke into 1986 Leaf, 2002 Donruss, and 2002 Donruss Best of Fan Club,  I may have had some 2002 Donruss but I was pretty sure I didn’t have anything else.  I also got the White Sox for $7, which is where the affordable comes in.  Let’s see what I got.

boxbreak-cbcollections01

Nothing overly exciting but all of the above cards went into my White Sox collection.  I had none of them.  The Jose Canseco on the left was numbered but I don’t remember to what.  Nothing real high.  He also threw in a few Sox cards that weren’t part of the break.  The Turkey Red in the back of the 86 Leaf’s in an Alexei Ramirez which I didn’t have as well.

boxbreak-cbcollections02

The 3 above went into the player collections.  I thought I had the Konerko 2002 Donruss but apparently not.  I got duplicates of the Tom Seaver which is why you see it in both pictures above.  So it went to the White Sox collection as well as the Tom Seaver collection.  The Luis Aparicio was another throw in from Colby that I didn’t have.

Definitely can’t complain about all that for $7.  Be sure to check out Colby’s blog for more of his affordable box breaks at “Cardboard Collections”.

Cheap LCS Pickups

My cousin was in town and I took him to the only decent LCS that’s not really an LCS.  Don’t know what I’m talking about, read here.  Anyways, we caught it at a good time.  They had out a 5/$1 box, a $1 box, and labeled prices box.  We searched them all and this is what I found.  I can’t tell you what I found where but I’ll tell you my cost at the end of the post.

lcs-01

2 Awesome Jordan’s.  Very shiny.  One is gold, one is silver.  Both are cards created from promotions by companies I have never heard of before.  One is a promo for a company that was going to be at the national that year.  The guy in charge of cards threw those in because he didn’t know what to charge.  2 Frank Thomas cards I didn’t have.

lcs03

Bought all these for my set completions.  As you can tell they are all Hall of Famers but I think I paid a good price for them.  You’ll see these again on my 1973 and 1981 posts.

lcs04

Another 1960 for the White Sox Collection.  The Michigan card doesn’t really fit with my collection because I only collect them in Michigan uniforms but I made an exception for that card because it has the block M’s.  You’ll see that in a later post on “Too Many Manninghams” where I’ll go more into detail.  I’m waiting on a couple of cards from Ebay before I throw that post up over there.

lcs-02

Picked both these up for my player collections of Tom Seaver and Billy Williams.  Really like both cards since they share them with Nolan Ryan, Johnny Bench and Tony Perez.

lcs05

And finally, 2 auto’s and a relic.  I know somebody who probably likes the Getz auto but it’s staying with me since he’s in a Sox uniform.  Although technically all those card aren’t it.  I did pick up a card for Dennis as well .  So add up all the above cards plus an additional relic card not pictured and the total cost to me was $12.  Not too bad, I must say.

Trade from Sluggo

My cousin came up for the 4th of July and brought me a small stack of Sox cards.  He sets up at shows and is always on the lookout for me.  He tends to grab odd ball stuff in hopes of picking up cards I don’t have.  He did a pretty good job here, if I remember right, I only had 1 of the cards he gave me.

sluggo02

All of the above are Frank Thomas.  I don’t think I recognized any of these sets except the Fleer on the top right but it’s actually a Tiffany parallel.  He definitely knows how to pick up things I don’t have.

sluggo01

Didn’t have any of these 3.  I thought I had the Jared Mitchell but I actually had the Purple parallel, so I now have a mini rainbow with the base set and the refractor version.

sluggo03

A couple more refractor versions of base cards.  I do love the shiny cards.

sluggo04

The 82 Donruss reprint of Fisk’s diamond king card.  And my first Topps American Pie, couldn’t have been of a better player.

sluggo05

And finally, he managed to hit my Paul Konerko collection with this shiny refractor of his 2011 Topps.  Thanks sluggo!

Box Break loot from Kyle

Kyle over at “JABO’s” held a box break for 2012 Topps Archives.  I was really looking forward to getting in on it because of the product.  My lesson learned was always check and see what possible cards your team might have.  I kept reading everybody’s posts about Archives and glancing through the cards, looking for some awesome White Sox cards, but hardly saw any.  So I waited until I got my loot from Kyle’s box break.

boxbreak-jabo01

Out of a whole box, this was all I got.  That sucks.  I didn’t even get duplicates of the Konerko to put towards each collection.  Sure, I got dupes of Danks but I only needed 1 of those.  After this, I went and looked at the checklist for Archives.  Wouldn’t you know it, I got all the base cards.  2 freaking cards.  3 including the dupe.  I can’t remember if I’ve even seen any inserts of White Sox players.  I want to say maybe 1 or 2.  There are cards I need for my player collections that weren’t Sox cards but (Luis Aparicio and Tom Seaver).  So needless to say, I wasn’t too thrilled with the Archives release.

But it all turned to be worth the break.  Because I did land this.

boxbreak-jabo02

Ron Kittle, sweet.  1984 Topps, sweet.  This made the break completely worthwhile.

Although I’m still pissed at the lack of Sox cards in Archives, that wasn’t Kyle’s fault, it was Topps fault.  Plus Kyle does his box breaks by cost in accordance to possible hits.  So I didn’t pay a huge amount for the Sox anyways.  Be sure to check out “JABO’s” for all kinds of card related stuff including more box breaks.

note-I already got the other Konerko I need from Dennis so no need to send it to me.  I know how generous a lot of you are and that’s the only reason for the note.

ebay12

1974 Topps – Johnny Jeter

Cost = $1.04/shipped

$1.04 was my max bid on all the vintage cards.  I always add .04 to whatever my max bid is that way if somebody else puts what I was thinking for max bid, that I outbid them by that .04.  Consider that a free cheap ebay tip.

Trade with Potch

Another trade that I had scanned awhile ago but put in the wrong folder, my bad.  I suck.

trade-potch01

Some 80’s goodness.  I had never seen the 1987 Fleer Mini’s so obviously I had none.  I remember all these sets from back in the day.

trade-potch02

And some modern cards.  The Carlos Quentin is one of those perforated cards.  I was in a heritage break but didn’t get the AJ card so it has a home as well.

Thanks for another great trade Potch.  Be sure to check him out at “Potch Wheeler and the Cardboard Heroes

Happy 4th!

246525_10151242258018625_1816484739_n

I got this photo from the Michigan facebook page but I was actually at this game.  I’m over there on the left, holding a blue piece.

Just wanted to take a minute to say that I hope you all have a happy & safe 4th of July.  Spend time with your friends and family.  But don’t forget those who are still protecting our freedom.

Trade with Spoke Bait

A long, long time ago.  I made a trade with theHitKing over at “Spoke Bait and the Game”.  Don’t let the length of time that it took me to post this tell you I didn’t like it.  I scanned a long time ago and they got put in my Tumblr file instead of my MSO folder.  I just ran across them so I got it together.

trade-spokebait03

All these are new to the White Sox Collection.  An 80’s stack, a 90’s stack, and a 00’s stack.  All greatly appreciated because they bring me closer to team sets being finished.

trade-spokebait04

Some 2012 Opening Day, which I had none of.  I don’t know if I would call Alex Rios a Superstar for the Superstar Celebrations.  This year maybe, definitely not last year.

trade-spokebait05

I had gotten in a Topps Heritage break and but didn’t get any of these that he sent.  I did get a Konerko in the group break but I still needed one for the White Sox Collection.  The rookie stars features our closer right now who is doing a great job.

trade-spokebait01

And of course, theHitKing sent me a few Konerko’s for my Paul Konerko Collection.  I have no idea how I didn’t have the toppstown but I didn’t.  Now that I’m going through the scans, I’m wondering if this wasn’t a trade package, but extra cards from playing a contest on his site about watching the Reds games.  Because I found this scan as well.

trade-spokebait06

I think I won a pack of 2012’s from him.  I gave all these to my son as he is just getting into collecting.

A great package from “Spoke Bait and the Game”.  If I owe you something, let me know because I don’t remember.

Hit him up for a trade but beware, he can be a little delusional.  This was wrote on my package.

trade-spokebait02

Although they may be in the mix this year, which I’m glad to see.  I always had a soft spot for the Reds.  Probably because of Tom Seaver.  I even remember having a Reds hat as a kid.
