Welcome

This blog is about sports cards. I tend to only purchase cheap items so don't come hear expecting to see big money cards. My teams collections are Chicago White Sox and Michigan Wolverines. I also have a bunch of player collections.

Cheaper Than Stamps #46

zzz-cheaperthanstamps

We’ve seen all the 80’s and let’s face it, we expect to get those cards cheap, but let’s see what else I got.

ebay-vintage1971-01

1971 Topps – Tom Matchick

I grabbed this in a lot of 3 for $.75.  I used all 3 cards, one was a 1977 World Series card featuring Johnny Bench that went to the Johnny Bench collection. and the following card.

ebay-vintage1970-01

1970 Topps – Angels rookies stars (Greg Washburn and Wally Wolf)

So as far as the 3 card lot, it equals out to $.25 a card and I used all 3 of them in collections.

ebay-vintage1961-01

1961 Topps – Earl Torgeson

I picked up this thinking I could use it for my White Sox collection but I actually already had this one so it went to the vintage collection.  I only paid $.25.

Here’s the rundown on how much I’ve paid and to which collection so far in the Cheaper Than Stamps series.

Cheaper Than Stamps #45

zzz-cheaperthanstamps

Now we get to the nitty gritty, not really but I wanted to say it.  We’ve seen 1987-1985 the last few days but now we are going to see 1984-1980.

ebay-vintage1984-01

1984 Donruss – Alejandro Pena, Tim Teufel, Tony Fernandez, Pat Sheridan and Marvell Wynne

I know, you’re shocked that I have more 5 card lots, but I do.  I paid a little more for this one but still way under budget.  I grabbed these 5 for $.39.

ebay-vintage1983-01

1983 Fleer – Steve Sax, Pedro Guerrero, Eddie Murray, Bill Madlock and Tim Wallach

Another stars lot, grabbed this one for $.25.  Have I mentioned my infinity for Fleer.  I know, I’ll shut up.

ebay-vintage1983-02

1983 Topps – Eddie Murray, Jesse Barfield, Jim Rice, Bill Madlock and Tim Wallach

Another 5 card lot of stars and another quarter.  Don’t worry, this is the last of the 5 card lots and this is also the last of the 80’s cards so come back tomorrow for some 70’s and 60’s.

Here’s the rundown on how much I’ve paid and to which collection so far in the Cheaper Than Stamps series.

Player Collections

Barry Larkin (7) $.82 – $.12/card
Bill Melton (4) $1.60 – $.40/card

Cheaper Than Stamps #44

zzz-cheaperthanstamps

We’ve seen 1987 and 1986, today we’ll hit 1985 and then tomorrow the years will start spacing out more.  Tomorrow will be the rest of the 80’s and Friday we will check out the true vintage, a couple of 70’s and even a card from the 60’s.

ebay-vintage1985-01

1985 Donruss – Tony Brewer, Steve Lyons, Billy Hatcher and Larry Sheets

This was another 5 card rookie lot but the 5th card you’ll see when I do the White Sox team sets pick ups.  I paid a quarter for these cards.  I can’t help it but when I see Steve Lyons, I think of this.

ebay-vintage1985-02

1985 Donruss – Mike Pagliarulo, Jeff Pendleton, Rick Schu, Ken Howell and Dan Gladden

I’ve picked up a bunch of Pagliarulo in these 5 card lots.  I got these for, I know you’re shocked, a quarter.

ebay-vintage1985-03

1985 Topps – Fernando Valenzuela, Steve Garvey, Mike Schmidt, Tony Fernandez and Dave Winfield

I don’t think I scanned these 5 cards with the original 5 cards that came in the lot.  I only say that because when I went back to Ebay to see how much I paid, his picture showed different cards.  Regardless, I paid a quarter each for this lot and the next.

ebay-vintage1985-04

1985 Topps – Jose Rijo, Mike Young, Mark Bailey, Jeff Kunkel and Juan Samuel

Like I said above, I got this rookie lot for a quarter.  I remember the Juan Samuel being a hot rookie as well as Jose Rijo.

ebay-vintage1985-05

1985 Topps – Mike Mason, Terry Pendleton, Darryl Strawberry and Frank Williams

Another quarter, another lot.  This was a 5 card lot but I believe it came with another Juan Samuel.  I definitely remember the Strawberry being as I was a New York Mets fan and was a huge fan of his and Dwight Gooden’s until the whole drug thing then I lost interest in them.

Here’s the rundown on how much I’ve paid and to which collection so far in the Cheaper Than Stamps series.

Player Collections

Barry Larkin (7) $.82 – $.12/card
Bill Melton (4) $1.60 – $.40/card
Cal Ripken jr (26) $5.12 – $.20/card
Carl Yastrzemski (8) $3.07 – $.38/card
Carlton Fisk (2) $.66 – $.33/card
Chris Getz (4) $1.60 – $.40/card
Gary Carter (12) $2.07 – $.17/card
Hoyt Wilhelm (4) $1.25 – $.31/card
Jim Abbott (8) $2.33 – $.29/card
Johnny Bench (8) $2.05 – $.26/card
Mark Buehrle (2) $.45 – $.23/card
Michael Jordan (13) $1.91 – $.25/card
Mike Schmidt (7) $1.97 – $.28/card
Paul Konerko (3) $.70 – $.23/card

Cheaper Than Stamps #43

zzz-cheaperthanstamps

Yesterday we checked out the cards from 1987, today, we move back one more year and see 1986.

ebay-vintage1986-01

1986 Donruss (rated rookies) – Ty Gainey, Cory Snyder, Kal Daniels, Dave Shipanoff and Johnny Abrego

As you can tell, lots more lots.  I grabbed these 5 cards for $.36 which certainly isn’t bad for 5 Rated Rookie cards.  A couple of recognizable names up there.

ebay-vintage1986-02

1986 Donruss (rated rookies) – Lance McCullers, Marty Clary, Mark McLemore, Todd Worrell and Rick Surhoff

5 more Rated Rookies for a quarter.  I’m not sure about everybody else but I know Worrell had a decent career.

ebay-vintage1986-03

1986 Donruss – Cecil Fielder, Lenny Dykstra, Joe Orsulak, Chris Brown and Floyd Youmans

Another rookie lot even though it’s not listed as Rated Rookies.  Definitely some names up in this lot, Cecil Fielder (Prince’s dad for you younger folk) and Lenny Dykstra.  I got this lot for a quarter as well.

ebay-vintage1986-10

1986 Donruss – Jim Beattie, Bill Russell, Jeff Russell and Mike Heath

I know it’s not 5 cards, but to be honest, it wasn’t a lot either.  I picked up all these singles from one seller as well as 2 other 1986 Donruss card that I grabbed for my White sox team set.  I paid $.11 for the Beattie and Heath, $.15 for the Russell (Jeff) and $.16 for the Russell (Bill).

ebay-vintage1986-04

1986 Fleer – Stewart Cliburn, Rick Aguilera, Todd Worrell, Mitch Webster and Tim Burke

More rookies, only this time Fleer.  You see another Todd Worrell.  I remember Mitch Webster being a hot rookie at the time and I know Rick Aguilera had himself a pretty good career.  I picked this lot up at a quarter as well.

ebay-vintage1986-05

1986 Fleer – Tim Birtsas, Lance McCullers, Herm Winningham, Don Carman and Steve Ontiveros

Lots and lots of rookies, or should I say lots of lots.  Nobody overly huge up there but any followers of Too Many Manninghams should know who Steve Ontiveros is since Dennis has been educating us on former Maize and Blue players.  I dropped another quarter on this lot.

ebay-vintage1986-06

1986 Fleer – Milt Thompson, Teddy Higuera, Darren Daulton, Jose Guzman and Steve Buechele

Are you tired of seeing 1986 rookies yet?  I’m not tired of seeing more Fleer.  Since I’ve started purchasing more vintage cards and have been buying 1980’s cards again, I’m appreciating the Fleer sets more.  It might be more memories than everything.  This was another quarter lot.

ebay-vintage1986-07

1986 Fleer – Joe Orsulak, Pat Clements and Dwayne Henry

What?  Only 3?  I actually had the other 2 cards, they probably came in one of the lots above.  Even at a quarter, it still definitely worth it.

ebay-vintage1986-08

1986 Topps – Kirk Gibson, Jim Rice, Bret Saberhagen, Orel Hershiser and Eric Davis

This was billed as a stars lot.  While Saberhagen, Hershiser and Davis were stars in their own right, I’m not so sure they were in 1986.  But I needed them and the price was right at a quarter again.

ebay-vintage1986-09

1986 Topps – Steve Buechele, John Russell, Joe Orsulak, Kirk McCaskill and Milt Thompson

Another rookie lot for a quarter.  Most of the players were featured above in either Donruss or Fleer lots.  Also, another quarter.

Here’s the rundown on how much I’ve paid and to which collection so far in the Cheaper Than Stamps series.

Player Collections

Barry Larkin (7) $.82 – $.12/card
Bill Melton (4) $1.60 – $.40/card
Cal Ripken jr (26) $5.12 – $.20/card

Cheaper Than Stamps #42

zzz-cheaperthanstamps

After taking a break from the Cheaper Than Stamps to see all the stuff Dennis sent me, we are back to it.  For now, because I got a whole box of cards from Jeff at 2 by 3 Heroes to get scanned and posted as well.  Last time, we finished the player collections, so let’s get to the vintage portion of the series.

ebay-vintage1987-02

1987 Donruss (rated rookies) – Eric Bell, Greg Swindell, Benito Santiago, Duane Ward and Chris James

I ended up buying so many of these 5 card lots from the seller that he didn’t charge me shipping.  If I would have paid for shipping, these 5 cards would have cost me $.15/each but since he didn’t charge me shipping, I only paid $.05/card.

ebay-vintage1987-03

1987 Donruss – Mitch Williams, Glenn Braggs, John Cangelosi, Kevin Elster and Bobby Thigpen

Another 5 card lot from the same seller.  I picked up this lot for $.30 or $.06/card.

ebay-vintage1987-01

1987 Donruss – Juan Castillo

I picked this up as a single for $.19.  It sounds kind of expensive after seeing what I paid for the other lots above, but it still fits in the parameters of my purchase prices.

ebay-vintage1987-05

1987 Fleer – Eric King, Ed Correa, Bob Tewksbury, John Cerutti and Bruce Ruffin

You guessed it, another 5 card lot.  Picked this one up for $.25 or $.05/card.

ebay-vintage1987-06

1987 Fleer – Greg Mathews, Mike Aldrete, Mark Eichhorn, Chris Bosio and Bob Sebra

More lots for $.05/card.  You can see why I grabbed up so many of these lots.

ebay-vintage1987-07

1987 Fleer – Reggie Williams, Mike Kingery, Scott Bankhead, Paul Assenmacher and John Cangelosi

Yep, more for a quarter.  Not that any of these lots are huge stars, but the reason the seller lists these players together is because they are rookie lots.

ebay-vintage1987-08

1987 Topps – Mark Eichhorn, Vince Coleman, Glenn Braggs, Mike Birkbech and Ruben Sierra

I even grabbed a couple of lots of 1987 Topps rookies, also for a quarter.

ebay-vintage1987-09

1987 Topps – John Kruk, Paul Assenmacher, Bobby Thigpen and Mike Aldrete

Another 5 card lot for a quarter, except that I already had 1 of the cards.  So technically I paid $.06 a card instead of a nickel.

ebay-vintage1987-11

1987 Topps – Bob Shirley, Tommy John and Dan Pasqua

I bought these as singles, the Shirley for $.19, the John for $.22 and the Pasqua for $.11.

ebay-vintage1987-12

1987 Topps – Alfredo Griffin, Ron Robinson and Steve Sax

I picked up these in 2 card lots of the same card.  I only bid like it’s 1 card because that’s all I need and I still only paid $.12 each for the Griffin and Robinson.  I got the Steve Sax as a single for a quarter.

ebay-vintage1987-13

1987 Topps – Argenis Salazar and Lonnie Smith

I got the Salazar as a single for $.11 and the Smith came in a 2 card lot and I paid $.11 for that as well.

ebay-vintage1987-10

1987 Topps – Steve Sax and Mike Schmidt

I also grabbed these singles for $.21 (Sax) and $.18 (Schmidt).  Pretty soon, I’ll have to move my 1987 Topps have list to it’s own page (I do that when it hits 50%).

I haven’t taken the time recently to search ebay for cards for the vintage collection.  I usually start at 1952 Topps and search each year until 1987 Topps.  Then do the same with Fleer and Donruss from 1981-1987.  It takes a little time but as you can see, I usually end up with quite a bit of cards.

Come back tomorrow to see the 1986 cards.

Here’s the rundown on how much I’ve paid and to which collection so far in the Cheaper Than Stamps series.
