Welcome

This blog is about sports cards. I tend to only purchase cheap items so don't come hear expecting to see big money cards. My teams collections are Chicago White Sox and Michigan Wolverines. I also have a bunch of player collections.

Cheaper Than Stamps #60

zzz-cheaperthanstamps

I know we left off with the exciting 1987 pick-ups, let get to the rest of the 80’s.

ebay-vintage1985

1985 Donruss – Jose Rijo

Another card I have no record of buying.  It might have been a throw in, some sellers throw in extra cards but they are usually junk card, not cards from 1985.  It is my 14th card of the set.

ebay-vintage1984

Marvell Wynne – 1984 Donruss

Another card I have no record of.  I’m not sure what happened here.

ebay-vintage1981

1981 Fleer – Mickey Rivers

Hey, I have record of this one.  I paid $.29 for this.  Always happy with some 80’s fleer.

That’s all the 80’s I have left.  Since I don’t post Cheaper Than Stamps on the weekend, that leaves one more day in March for one more day of Cheaper Than Stamps purchases from February.  You’ll get to see the 70’s pick-ups on Monday and we’ll see if I get my March purchases scanned this weekend we can go right to it on the 1st.

Cheaper Than Stamps #59

zzz-cheaperthanstamps

Today we start with the February vintage collection pick-ups.  Of course, we’ll be starting our March pick-ups in a few days because it’s almost April already.

ebay-vintage1987-01

1987 Topps – Rick Mahler, Rob Wilfong and John Henry Johnson

I know, the exciting 1987 Topps.  They are perfect for the Cheaper Than Stamps posts because they are cheap.  Now that this set is over 50%, I moved the want list to it’s own page and added a daily search on Ebay for them so you’ll probably end up seeing even more.  I picked up the Mahler and Wilfong for $.11/each and the Johnson for $.12.

ebay-vintage1987-02

1987 Topps – Johnny Ray, Keith Moreland and Cecilio Guante

I grabbed the Ray for $.06, the Moreland for $.21 and the Guante for $.11.  I remember Moreland really well as my whole neighborhood were Chicago Cubs fans so we watched them on WGN all the time.

ebay-vintage1987-03

1987 Topps – Zane Smith, Larry Sheets and Jerry Reuss

The Smith was $.12, the Sheets for $.16 and the Reuss for $.06

ebay-vintage1987-04

1987 Topps – Chico Walker and Dave Parker

Even though I watched Cubs games, I don’t remember seeing Chico Walker.  I remember his cards but don’t really remember hearing his name.  Dave Parker on the other hand, was a big star at the end of his career.  I believe I had a player collection of him back in the day.  I grabbed the Walker for $.16 and the Parker for $.15.

I’m only going to do 1987 with this post, tomorrow you’ll see the rest of the 80’s and Monday (the last day of March) will be the last of the February pick-ups, the 70’s.

Here’s the rundown on how much I’ve paid and to which collection so far in the Cheaper Than Stamps series.

Player Collections

Barry Larkin (9) $1.32 – $.15/card
Bill Melton (4) $1.60 – $.40/card

Cheaper Than Stamps #58

zzz-cheaperthanstamps

Yesterday, we finished with the player collections.  Today we start (and finish) with the White Sox team set pick-ups.  From newest to oldest.

ebay-whitesox14

2014 Topps – Alexei Ramirez, Dayan Viciedo, Matt Lindstrom, Hector Santiago, Josh Phegley, Jeff Keppinger, Jose Quintana, Erik Johnson and Andre Rienzo

This is the whole series I team set, minus the Chris Sale because it goes to the Chris Sale collection and now I need to pick one up for the team collection.  I grabbed this whole lot for $2.28 for 10 cards which equals out to $.23 a card so it was still under budget.

ebay-whitesox13

Dayan Viciedo – 2013 Topps

Um, I have no record of purchasing this card.  I went all the way back to November of last year and couldn’t find it.  I promise that I got it for under $.29.

Somehow, I didn’t win and other newer cards so let’s get to the vintage portion of todays post.

ebay-whitesox08f

1972 Topps – Wilbur Wood

I already had one of these in the Wilbur Wood collection so I grabbed this copy to go in the White Sox collection.  I actually picked up a 3 card lot of 1972 cards so the other 2 go to the Vintage collection.  I paid $.79 for the lot, which equals to $.26 each.

ebay-whitesox09f

John Buzhardt – 1966 Topps

I grabbed this card for $.30.  It helps with that team set but I still need a bunch of cards, so it didn’t help much.  I’m not going to turn down a 60’s card for under the cost of a stamp though.

ebay-whitesox10f

Eddie Fisher – 1964 Topps

Ditto with this card, I still need a bunch for this years team but again, a 60’s card for $.29.  You can’t really beat that, it’s essentially a quarter box find.

That completes all the cards I got for the White Sox collection.  Come back tomorrow as we start with the Vintage collection pick-ups.

Here’s the rundown on how much I’ve paid and to which collection so far in the Cheaper Than Stamps series.

Player Collections

Barry Larkin (9) $1.32 – $.15/card
Bill Melton (4) $1.60 – $.40/card

Cheaper Than Stamps #57

zzz-cheaperthanstamps

On our last player collection from our February purchases.  Since I save them alphabetically and usually post them the same way, today will be Ryan Zimmerman.

ebay-szimmerman

2011 Topps Toppstown, 2012 Bowman Platinum Gold, 2012 Bowman Chrome and 2007 Topps Generation Now

It was nice to pick up some Zimmerman’s as I don’t have many.  The Toppstown didn’t surprise me, those inserts are everywhere.  Maybe the Generation Now too, but the 2 Bowman cards are pretty nice sets and cards.  The Toppstown was only $.11, the Platinum was $.29, the Chrome was $.26 and the Generation Now was $.25.

Here’s the rundown on how much I’ve paid and to which collection so far in the Cheaper Than Stamps series.

zzz-cheaperthanstamps

Now we’re down to the last couple of player collections but we are going back to a Hall of Famer.

ebay-schmidt

Mike Schmidt – 2013 Topps Chasing History

I don’t get too many Schmidt’s, according to the list below, it’s my 8th pick-up but I’m pretty sure the majority of that was my black Friday purchase at COMC.  I just went and looked, 4 of those were from COMC so I have picked up 4 others but a couple of those were in lots.  I grabbed this one for $.30.

Here’s the rundown on how much I’ve paid and to which collection so far in the Cheaper Than Stamps series.

It’s Sunday, time to recap the pictures that I post on My Sports Obsession Tumblr page.  It is a variety of sports pictures and videos from vintage to current.

Sorry, but this week I have been slacking.  When I did take the time to find photos, I just didn’t really run across a lot of what I like to post.  So today is a condensed version of our usual posts.

Cheaper Than Stamps #55

zzz-cheaperthanstamps

From 2 Hall of Famers (Barry Larkin & Cal Ripken jr) to a future Hall of Famer (I know it’s early, but it’s possible) in Chris Sale.

ebay-sale

2014 Topps and 2011 Topps

What you’ll see in an upcoming post is that I purchased the series 1 team set and since I fill the player collections first, the Sale goes here.  I got the series 1 team set for $2.28/shipped which equals just under $.23.  I was surprised I didn’t have the 2011 but I didn’t start the Chris Sale collection until after I already completed the team sets so I didn’t keep a 2nd one.  I actually won a lot of 2 of those cards for $.29.

As I was filling the bottom half, I realized that these were the first 2 cards I picked up for the Chris Sale collection in the Cheaper Than Stamps posts.

Here’s the rundown on how much I’ve paid and to which collection so far in the Cheaper Than Stamps series.

ebay-ripken

1991 Upper Deck, 1990 Fleer Players of the Decade and 1997 Upper Deck (defensive gems)

None of these pick-ups really surprise me, nothing too fancy.  I grabbed the 91 Upper Deck for $.21, the Fleer for $.18 and the 97 UD for $.28.  All were needed for the Cal Ripken jr collection so I certainly won’t complain.

Here’s the rundown on how much I’ve paid and to which collection so far in the Cheaper Than Stamps series.

Cheaper Than Stamps #53

zzz-cheaperthanstamps

Yesterday we saw the short printed Paulie that I got, today we are going back to a former Michigan Wolverine.

ebay-larkin

Barry Larkin – 2012 Topps Timeless Talents and 1993 Fleer Ultra

We got a modern card and an early to mid 90’s in these 2 cards.  I picked up both of them in lots.  The 2012 Topps lot was 2 of the timeless talents, the other was Willie Mays/Matt Kemp (if you want it, just say so).  I picked up the lot for $.29  I always liked the Fleer Ultra cards, like the Stadium Club pictures back then, action and no borders.  This was in a 3 card lot with other ultra cards of Mark Grace and Ivan Rodriguez.  I grabbed that lot for $.21.

Here’s the rundown on how much I’ve paid and to which collection so far in the Cheaper Than Stamps series.

Yesterday, I mentioned upping my minimum bid to the price of a stamp.  Today, I changed all my previous bids to $.48 (stamps are $.49) so I could keep the title CHEAPER than stamps.  Tonight, I won 8 cards, which is what I was afraid of.  I know it doesn’t sounds like much, but that’s just under $4.  At $4/day, it ends up being $112/month, which is way over budget.  I might have to rethink this.

Yesterday we got to see the Chris Getz collection, today, we are sticking with current active players, although it may be his last year.

ebay-konerko

Paul Konerko – 2013 Bowman Platinum Blue

According to the listing, this is a short print so I was really shocked when I grabbed it for $.29.  The seller must have been annoyed to let a short print go at that price, but oh well, not my problem.  It was a very nice addition to the Paul Konerko collection.

Here’s the rundown on how much I’ve paid and to which collection so far in the Cheaper Than Stamps series.

Cheaper Than Stamps #51

zzz-cheaperthanstamps

I slacked off some this past weekend so this is the 1st post in a few days.  I’m thinking about maybe upping my max bid for these posts, like maybe actually making it the price of a stamp, but I’ll have to Google to even know what that is now.  I’ve also thought about setting parameters for certain collections, so I don’t end up winning too much that I can’t afford all at once.  We’ll see, I’ll let you know what or when I decide.

We left off with the Gary Carter collection cards, today we’ll check out the former Michigan Wolverine and Chicago White Sox player. Chris Getz.

Chris Getz – 2013 Topps Update

I always like getting his cards because I don’t really come across too many of his.  He looked much better in his Maize and Blue or Black and White uniforms, but at least in this photo, they used the old powder blue uniforms.  I grabbed this card for $.29.

Here’s the rundown on how much I’ve paid and to which collection so far in the Cheaper Than Stamps series.

Yesterday we saw the new additions to the Steve Carlton collection, let’s see who we got today.

ebay-carter

Gary Carter – 1992 Donruss Studio and 2012 Topps Archives

I picked up the 2012 Archive for $.10, that’s right a dime box and had it shipped.  I got the 1992 Studio even cheaper, free.  It was a throw in with another card I purchased.  I have a seller who always throws junk wax in to protect the purchased cards.

Yesterday we saw the new addition to the Mark Buehrle collection, let’s see who we got today.

ebay-carlton

Steve Carlton – 2012 Topps Blockbusters & 1984 Topps (all-star)

I got the Topps Blockbusters for $.15 and the vintage (I know, not really, but still) Topps All-Star for $.28.  My Steve Carlton collection is still fairly small (only 11 cards) as I don’t get much of a chance to pick his cards up cheap.
