Welcome

This blog is about sports cards. I tend to only purchase cheap items so don't come hear expecting to see big money cards. My teams collections are Chicago White Sox and Michigan Wolverines. I also have a bunch of player collections.

Vacation Pick-Ups #6–Autos and Relics

Even with all the awesome vintage I picked up (and you haven’t even seen it all), I did manage to find some cheap White Sox autos and relics.

nc01

I was pumped to get the Brent Lillibridge autograph.  I really liked him when he played for us.  He played everywhere and always gave 110%.  I have a few of Ryan Meaux autographs, I think he was supposed to be a stud at some point but never hit it big.

nc02

I grabbed thie Sergio Santos relic card because it has the vintage blue pinstripe jersey swatch.  I love the old jerseys.  And the Jim Thome relic because he was an all around good guy and it’s a pretty cool looking card.

Stay tuned tomorrow and I’ll start showing the Vacation Pick-Ups for the Vintage Collection.

Completed Team Set–2012 Topps

teamset2012topps01

This is the first of 3 2012 Completed Team Sets that Jeff at “2 by 3 Heroes” finished for me.  This one, the base set, being the biggest of the 3.

teamset2012topps02

I remember the Brent Lillibridge catch and it’s great to see it on cardboard.  As a matter of fact, if you click his name, I’m pretty sure I posted the picture after he made it.

And we finish off the Surfboard set, which I believe “Night Owl” dubbed it.  Any 2012 set is great for me to complete because I never bought a pack of cards in 2012

And in case you forgot, I don’t include the update set since they use a different number system.  I count that as a set on it’s own.

Sluggo is at it again

My cousin picks up boxes of cards from guys looking to unload their cards in bulk.  He gets them on the cheap, some base, sometimes lots of relics or autos.  He always goes through and sends me a bunch for my collections.  Stuff he can’t get rid of and sometimes he just likes to surprise me.  I received a box a few months ago and then another about a month after that.  As per my usual, I’m been sitting on them because I was too lazy to scan the cards.

trade-sluggo01

He sent me all kinds of newer stuff.  I don’t know what year the Gordon Beckham is, but it was cool looking.  I only assume it is newer.  Everything is for sure the last couple of years.

trade-sluggo02

A few older cards that I needed,  It might even be my first 1984 fleer, might as well be Carlton Fisk.

trade-sluggo03

A whole slew of Frank Thomas cards.  I should count how many cards I have of him.  I bet it’s more than anybody in my player collections.

trade-sluggo04

The above and below are all duplicates to my other collections but they all fit into my Vintage collection.

trade-sluggo05

As you can tell, he knows I collect Tom Seaver.  While he sent all of the above for that collection, they ended up in the Vintage collection.  But he still hit me with these.

trade-sluggo07

All of these weren’t duplicates and are heading for the Tom Seaver Collection binder.  Lots of great stuff there.

trade-sluggo08

You didn’t think with all the White Sox cards he sent that he wouldn’t manage to it the Paul Konerko Collection did you?  Now who was the other Chicago White Sox player I collect.

trade-sluggo09

That’s right, he even sent me these Luis Aparicio for that Player Collection.  Sluggo is the man.

2009 Upper Deck Signature Stars Autograph ALEXEI RAMIREZ Auto #165 - eBay

And Sluggo surprised me with this cad.  I’ve been looking to get an Alexei Ramirez auto and here he saved me the trouble.  Love this card.  Big kudo’s to Kevin for this card.

He even sent me some Michigan cards, and coming from a Notre Dame fan that mean’s a lot that he didn’t burn them and just send me ashes.  If you want to see those, check out my post over at “Too Many Manninghams”, click here to go directly to the post.

Thanks again Sluggo, you’re a gentleman and a scholar.  Ok, a hillbilly and family, same thing.

Have you seen the 2012’s yet?

I got my 2012 cards from Kyle over at “JABO’s” who held a box break.  I also had the Cubs and Tigers but I set those aside for trades so I won’t bother showing those.  You might have seen some 2012’s, I think there has been a post or 2 out there in blog-o-land.  But I will show the White Sox portion of the break because it’s my blog and I want too.  And yes, I’m going to show every Sox card (minus duplicates).

boxbreak03

These are the base cards.  I do believe it’s a whole team set.  Last time I looked, www.teamsets4u.com didn’t have them listed yet, but I’ve seen team sets listed on ebay at 11 cards, so there is my brilliant detective work.

boxbreak02

Here’s the inserts and parallel’s.  Love the Aparicio, I’m really close to pulling the trigger on starting a player collection of him.  After researching him for my Today’s 9 series, I’ve really gotten into him as a player and his cards.

boxbreak01

And 2 cards for my current player collections.  Luckily I got 2 Konerko’s so I was able to fill both.  Only 1 of the Seaver so I need another one for my team collection as I always fill my player collections first.  I’ve been watching some of the relic cards on ebay, they aren’t real high dollar but higher than I’m willing to pay.  I can wait them out till they drop.  I’d really like the Aparicio with the ring, and I know there is another Gold Standard Seaver in his Reds uniform and a Frank Thomas in that same set that I need to get.  I haven’t investigated enough to know what all Sox cards are out there from this set.

Thanks for the break Kyle, I look forward to the next one, which I’m already signed up for.

Photo Cleansing #4

We’ll start with a little NCAA football.

Has everyone seen the retro jerseys for the first night game in Ann Arbor this season.  They aren’t as bad as I initially thought they were going to be after the “leak”.  It’ll be better if it leads to a win for the maize and blue but all in all, I can tolerate the jersey for 1 game, I guess.

Just thought it was a cool schedule.  I see it as a big poster in my man cave, if I had one that is.
Next for some baseball.

Good ole Paul Konerko.  He has been on fire for the last few season after most of his years in Chicago have been spent cold as ice until June then heats up.  It seems he has gotten over that the last few seasons and came out of spring training ready to go.
tumblr_lmns4eraPb1qzniimo1_500
Brent Lillibridge has also been on fire and has come from nowhere this year.  He’s still a supersub off the bench officially.  But his defense and surprising offense has put him in the starting line-up most days anymore.  A guy who has had 3 total home runs in his major league career coming into this year already has 7 this year.  And has been making defensive plays as well. One Chicago sports writer mentions how many saves he has this season, defensively.  How can Ozzie keep him on the bench, he can’t.  He’s had 88 at bats already this year.  His previous high was last year at 98 at bats.

Jackie Robinson sliding into Phil Rizzuto.  Have I mentioned how much I love vintage, oh wait, that was baseball cards.

I’m sure you’ve all heard about Gary Carter so I won’t go into it but he was a favorite of mine growing up.  I’m not sure where this came from, I assume a NY paper but I don’t know for sure, it probably isn’t because of the prayer line but I’ll guess it all the same.  Either way, I thought it was pretty cool.
And we’ll finish of with some NBA.
tumblr_lmkjtvtTSg1qh9wcto1_500
That’s just funny.
tumblr_lm3vvbaA6l1qh9wcto1_501
Larry Legend.  Also a favorite of mine growing up.  Probably the whole I live in Indiana, he’s from Indiana thing.  Been to his restaurant quite a few times down in Terre Haute.  It’s pretty cool.  And they have food too!
tumblr_lm3vvbaA6l1qh9wcto1_500
One thing I like about the whole who’s better discussion between Michael Jordan and LeBron James is all kinds of photo’s and video’s being thrown out on the web again.  I know they are out there, but I’m too lazy to go find them, I prefer they get posted on other sites for me to steal.  Much easier that way.
tumblr_lm4nczFtWo1qasfiho1_1280
tumblr_lmcjvwz5gS1qdi785o1_1280
I remember most of these if not all of them.  I used to watch tons of Bulls games.  I probably watched 90% of them in their entirety back in the day.
Lots of highlights here.
I definitely remember this game.  This is what MJ was all about.  He was a competitor above anything else.
