Welcome

This blog is about sports cards. I tend to only purchase cheap items so don't come hear expecting to see big money cards. My teams collections are Chicago White Sox and Michigan Wolverines. I also have a bunch of player collections.

Team Collection Boost

I'm here, just in time to get my last one out for the month. It's a big one too. Tomorrow is my surgery so I didn't want to leave this for the last day of the month. Thanks to all of you who wished me well on the last post. I assure you I'm in safe hands, my doc did graduate from the greatest public university in the world. That would be the University of Michigan for those who don't want to admit it.

There's quite a few of good managers listed up there. Cubs with their floating heads again, I could understand that now a days with social distancing and all. I don't think I knew Don Zimmer ever coached the Red Sox or that Tommy Lasorda did the Dodgers (kidding).

The top picture came from the Facebook purchase, all the others came from Sportlots. These 19 cards put the 1979 Topps set at 402 cards which is good for just over 55% completed.

I put in another order at the virtual dime store (baseballcardstore.ca) as well as had some of my cards shipped from Sportlots. Once those get here and I get them logged in and scanned, I'll start next months cards.

Date with a scalpel

This is a first, I'm actually ahead of schedule for the month. At least with posting because for next month's cards, I just had my cards shipped today from Sportlots so I'm going to have to rush to get them ready to post when they do arrive. Luckily for me, I'm having surgery on Monday and with that, comes 2 weeks off of work so I'm going to have plenty of time to catch up. As long as I pass my Covid test tomorrow, it's on. I hope it's multiple choice.

The only reason I mention the surgery is I've had some peeps ask what's getting done. I'm getting a nose job. Sorta. I can barely breathe from my nose, has been that way since I was a kid but has gotten really bad the last few years so I went and had it looked at. Apparently my septum is S shaped, which explains a lot. So I'm going in and they are straightening it out. It's been a long time coming but to be honest, I'm pretty excited about having 2 weeks off. After having all the time off during quarantine, I already know I'll enjoy it, minus the pain but I'm optimistic that it'll be minimum.

Anyways, to today's Vintage post.

Again, this is just a sampling because I got 155 cards for this set. That was a huge chunk for an average of $.06/card. And yes, that is a Dennis Eckersley rookie card. There's former Sox and Wolverines, there's broadcasters and yes, you young pups, Dusty Baker used to play the game too, back before his kids were getting run over in World Series games.

Like I said, a huge chunk of this set. These 155 cards almost doubled what I had and puts that set now at 348 cards which is good for over half at just under 53% completed.

That Facebook purchase was a huge pick-up for me and it started with Dennis giving me the heads up so another huge Thank You to him. I got one more post for this month and a few days to go so I promise to get it out this weekend because I have a hot date with a scalpel on Monday.

5 in a row

I've been knocking out the posts this week. Here I thought next week I would be knocking them out since I'm having surgery on Monday and will be home for the next 2 weeks. This will be my 5th day in a row posting. I must be sick.

As you can tell from above, today's is the 1980 Topps set. These also all came from the Facebook purchase that Dennis hooked me up with. Really like the Quisenberry rookie and the Astros jerseys (even if everybody is hating on them these days.) You also get the Niekro brothers in a post.

This is just a sampling of the 122 cards that I received for this set. It now has 311 cards for just under 43% complete.

Lotsa Vintage

We continue on with Vintage month here on MSO. Today we drop back a few more years.

This is a small sample of the 1974 Topps that I got in the Facebook purchase. I needed a total of 111 of the '74's I got. That was a nice chunk to the set which now stands at 46% complete with 304 cards.

Vintage Sox

Hey, we finally randomed up a non-vintage post. Well, not really. It did come up White Sox so these are for the team collection.

This is the one lone card for the White Sox collection from the Facebook lot. I actually got a bunch but I already had all the others.

I did manage to find a bunch of '77 cards of the Sox from Sportlots though. All of the above were $.18/each. These actually complete the Sox team as far as the individual cards go but I still need a few others that have a Sox player on them.

These would be 2 of them. They were a little more at $.43 and $.50 but still in range. After purchasing them all and logging them into TCDB, I realized I was only 1 more card short of having all the Sox cards from that set. So I'm going to have to go pick it up for next month.

Vintage boost

The Sox have been a buzzsaw the last week or so, knocking everything out of the parks. I rarely watch games live (usually record them) but I'm watching today's live, so of course, they are losing. It's only 2-1 in the 8th so they still have a shot but I figured I could blog and watch the end of the game.

This is just a sample of the 89 cards I got in that Facebook purchase via Dennis. As I stated before, I just grabbed names that I knew really well. That boosts that set to 231 cards which is good for 35% completed. Pretty good cards for an average of $.06/card.

More Teams

Looks like the random generator wants to get the team posts out of the way first. After today, there is only 1 more left and then 4 vintage posts and a Sox post so I can't skip to many days if I want to get these posts out before September starts.

Not sure why the Cubs never have team pics. I remember multiple years where they used the floating heads. I first started collecting in 1981 so when I got cards from 1980, I always thought they were the coolest thing. Than the older the cards got, the cooler they were. These 4 all came from Sportlots at $.18/each.

the Past

Another day, another post brought up on random. My Sox are on a hot streak, even if it's against the Tigers. Playing the North side this weekend so hopefully we stay hot. It'd be better if I didn't have to work Saturday but it is what it is.

That's the present, let's drop back to the past for today's post.

Gotta love the Expos card. Another Cardinals team card as well. I think I ended up with 3 different ones of them.

All 3 of these came from the Facebook purchase that Dennis (how are those Tiger's doing?) hooked me up with. I should probably be nicer to him since he's been good for my collections but you know, he likes the Tigers. It's a good thing he likes Michigan at least. Sorry Dennis, nothing but love for ya!

Birth Year

I occasionally go to Sportlots to search for sets that I'm close to completing and grabbing some cards. I'm not as close as I like on this set but it was the first set I actively purchased cards for, before I was doing the whole Vintage collection, so I went and grabbed some. I found a lot more on the cheap than I thought I would.

18 of these 21 cards were only $.18/each. Obviously I didn't choose from the Mint cards but as you can see, most of those cards aren't bad at all. I'll certainly take them.

These 21 and the Mets team card you saw last week puts my birth year set at exactly 500 cards which is good for just over 75% complete. The majority of those are high numbers so I'm going to have to start dropping a little more money to start completing this set.

Vintage Teams

Today's post is the team collection variety. I had a couple of years where I only had 1 card so this is the post to show those off.

I lied, I have 2 cards for this year but I figured I'd throw them on here as well. That would be my cousin's favorite team and my grandparents favorite team. Sox were supposed to play the Cards tomorrow but it's been cancelled and a double header for Saturday is scheduled, so far. Both of these 74's came from the Facebook lot.

I picked up this Mets team for my '73 set from Sportlots for $.18. I actually picked up a bunch of '73's but you'll have to wait to see the rest of those.

I figured since the Cardinals are in the news, I'd show 2 of their cards. Not really. This '71 team card also came to me from Sportlots for $.18. This card gives me 108 for that year as well.

Speaking of being in the news, these guys are always getting into fights. I don't know why that would be. I also grabbed this at Sportlots for $.18. I'd say 3 cards from the early 70's for just over $.50 is a pretty good deal. This card gives me 68 for that set.

Over half way there

I mentioned that I got some cards off of Facebook via Dennis. These are the highlights of the 35 1979 cards.

I don't want to say that I grabbed players to show that I knew because I know of most of the players, if from cards alone. I grabbed players that I was more familiar with, I guess that sounds right.

These 35 cards put the 1979 cards at 404 which is good for 53% completed. That's further along than I realized that set was. That 35 also put it over halfway for the set.

New Collection

I've mentioned a few times that I was starting a new collection. While I already had some cards to start it, I figured I'd wait until I bought some new ones to announce.

Team cards!!!

A few months ago, I want to say on a Night Owl's post when bloggers were doing the things I like that you don't or vice versa, he mentioned that he liked the team photos on the card. I always did as well when I was growing up and that post reminded me of how much I used to love pulling them from packs. So I started a collection of them.

I even purchased the 8 sleeve pages to put them in binders, by teams of course. I purchased those at the start of the quarantine back in March and it took about 3-4 weeks to finally get them but I got them.

I picked up all of these on Sportlots. These are all from the 1981 set which was the last Topps set that did them for awhile. I have more to show from other years but I'm spacing those out in other posts.

Completed Set

So this months post are all going to be my new collection (that I haven't announced yet) and vintage and then one White Sox post. So today's random came up with one of the vintage posts. It actually goes with a post from last month.

If you remember the post last month, I had said I was only 5 cards away from completing the 1985 Fleer set and that I had already purchased them. Well here they are. All are big names so it's no surprise they were last because I only buy the cheap. These weren't majorly expensive, just more than what I usually pay. I got the Rose for $.55, the Mattingly for $1, the Gwynn for $.98, the Brett for $.85 and the Ripken for $.75.

Normally the Ripken would show up in a player collection post but it is the only card I got this month that goes in a player collection so I let it go up with this post. Actually I probably would have showed it in both posts because this is the final 5 for the set so it was important here as well.

I do like the Fleer sets of the 80's, I think partly because they were harder to find around here growing up but you could find Topps everywhere so I didn't have as many.

I would show the page that shows the completed percentage but it still says I need 2 cards, but as you can see in the above pic, it shows I have no items left.

See, I don't know why it shows that.

This is the 2nd set I've completed this year, and for the last 20 years or so. I don't remember if I completed any sets as a kid or not to be honest. I had some sets but I think I may have just bought them outright. I don't remember collecting to complete sets. I may have the 1987 set, it was the last year I collected and I bought a ton of cards that year.

Facebook

Just a quick post tonight. I got a message from Dennis last month that he had a line on some cards for sale on Facebook and wanted to know if I was interested in some of the lots. I was at work so I couldn't take the time to go through them but I glanced at them. I told I'd be interested in anything older than 1987 for my Vintage collection.

He contacted the guy and picked up what he could. I sent some money, via Paypal, to Dennis to cover what he picked up for me plus some shipping and he sent them to me.

He sent the cards pretty quickly and I received them before the 1st so they will be a part of this months posts but I wanted you all to know that when I say I purchased them on Facebook, that, while technically is true, Dennis really hooked me up on them.

Not only did he hook me up with the cards, he even did all my sorting for me. He's such a nice guy. They were all even still in number order.

Here is all of my needs. You can see those are some pretty healthy stacks of 1974, 1976, 1977 and 1980. A small amount of 1979's as well. Don't worry, I won't show you every card when that years post comes up, but I did select a few cards to show.

I was pretty excited about these, I added quite a bit to my Vintage Collection.

Here's everything that I received. The box on the right were all the dupes to my collection.

As you can see, a pretty good portion were dupes but even with all of the dupes it was a great deal, an awesome deal if you will. When all was said and done, I ended up adding the following to my collections.

  • 1974 (111 cards)
  • 1976 (155 cards)
  • 1977 (89 cards)
  • 1979 (35 cards)
  • 1980 (121 cards)
511 vintage cards, all for $30, which equals out to just under $.06 a card and that only includes what I kept for the collection. I didn't even include the dupes when figuring out what I paid.

I don't know if you noticed these 2 sets at the bottom of the photograph up above. Dennis also sent these as they were dupes in the cards he picked up in the same transaction. I really love the Kmart set because I had it growing up. I may have had the other one as well but I really don't remember. I already had the Sox cards from those sets as well as a couple of the player collection cards so I get to leave these intact.

As I said before, Dennis really hooked me up with this transaction.

Anyways, just wanted to give a heads up so when a post up that says I got the cards from Facebook, that Dennis was a big part of the pick-up.

Vintage with more vintage to follow

My first post of August only took 5 days. I hadn't actually got my stuff together until yesterday. I finally finished scanning yesterday and cropping today so I'm finally ready.

You'll notice an absence of player collections this month. Apparently I went on a vintage kick plus I started a new collection and I bought a bunch of cards for that, but those are vintage as well so it's pretty much a vintage collection post. I do have one White Sox team post, but those are vintage too so as I said, the whole month will be vintage.

After randomning, today's post is the oldest of the Vintage posts.

I picked up a couple of '72's. Both for a quarter each. These 2 give me 67 for the set. This set has always seemed very hippy to me.

I picked up one black bordered '71 also for a quarter. It gives me 108 cards for that set.

Before the black set, came the grey one. I grabbed 3 cards to give me 68. I picked up the Humphreys for $.18, the Maxvill for $.30 and the Otis for a quarter. I do like picking up Washington Senators cards just for the nostalgic reasons. The Otis card I wasn't sure what was going on under his ear, I thought it was some kind of growth at first glance.

These 3 cards give me 51 for the '69 set. While I recognize all the names here, I really recognize the Rick Monday so I thought that was a cool card to get on the cheap. It is weird seeing him in an A's jersey though. I paid a quarter for each of these as well.

In case you hadn't noticed, all these came from Sportlots. I think they all came from one seller. I picked up a card I wanted and then just started with the oldest cards he had and just started adding anything to my cart that I didn't have that was relatively cheap.
