Welcome

This blog is about sports cards. I tend to only purchase cheap items so don't come hear expecting to see big money cards. My teams collections are Chicago White Sox and Michigan Wolverines. I also have a bunch of player collections.

Half Dollar Card Show

My Sox got rained out today but I still spent my day in my card room, finally putting all the cards I received in my last Sportlots package away. After all that damage was done, I had to add 2 more binders and I need to order more pages because I only have 10 or so left. Last time I ordered them was a year ago at the height of Covid and it took forever to get them. We'll see how long it takes this time.

Today's random popped up on some of my card show purchases but before I get to those. My cousin (who went with me) sent this to me.

I put the link in case the embed didn't work. If you skip to the 8:55 mark, 2 big guys walk in over his shoulder. The guy in the ND hoodie is my cousin, the guy in the Michigan hoodie is me. Does this make me YouTube famous? It has over 11k views and I know everyone that watched it was just to see me in the background. It's just like that Mark Jackson card.

Anyways, at that card show is where I picked up these Sox cards.

I picked up this 2020 Frank Thomas in a $.50 cent box. I guessed I didn't have it and I was correct. It is my 555th card of the Big Hurt.

I grabbed the Michael Jordan just because it was pretty cool with the 1986 Donruss look-a-like. I paid $3 for it, way more than my usual budget but that's what card shows are for. This is only my 15th card of MJ but I only collect him in Sox uniforms as I don't have a PC of him anymore.

These were in the same $.50 cent box, I was a little surprised to find some Sepia refractors, 3 to be exact. You saw the other in a previous post (Moncada). What was really surprising was the Moncada and Abreu, I mean Mazara sucked for us so he didn't surprise me at all. This is my 10th card of him and my 146th of the MVP.

This is one of those Living Legends cards. I didn't realize that's what it was when I bought it, I knew I recognized it just didn't remember what it was. I paid $2 for it and it is my 37th card of Avi.

Last but not least, I picked up this 1961 Post card of Turk Lown, also, in the $.50 cent box. It's not cut well but you know who doesn't care, this guy. It's only my 3rd card of Turk.

That $.50 cent box only had a few hundred cards in it, that's why I leafed through it. Didn't really figure to find much so I was surprised to find as much as I did. It was also the first thing I looked at it when I walked in the doors. As in, right about where I was when I went off camera in that video above. Small world.

Other Topps Sox

I just spent the last hour or so finishing up my Tier 1 collection purchases on Sportlots so next week I'll start on the Tier 2. I have the Colts/Bills game on but I'm really not paying much attention to it. I'm listening to music and I just glance up occasionally to look at the TV. I just don't really get into the NFL much anymore. I watch highlights when I hear a Michigan grad made a good play or something but that's about it. Let's face it, most of those highlights are Tom Brady.

I found this a week or so ago and kept forgetting to post it so I'll go ahead and throw it up here.

So many great players passed last year and we're barely a week in this year and we lose a great manager. I was a little shocked to see he passed and then I saw his age, I didn't realize he was 93. He's been around forever and it's awesome that other than one year he played with the Kansas City A's, he spent his whole career with one team. At least he got to see them win another World Series before he left. RIP Tommy Lasorda.

Today's post are more White Sox cards from 2018 but from Topps.

We'll start off with Allen & Ginter. The top 2 complete the A&G set for that year. The Frank Thomas collection is now at 543 cards.

I'm only half way (4 of 8) on the A&G X set though.

The top 5 cards of the Big League set complete the team set for me. I do like the looks of this set and hope it sticks around for awhile. That Carson Fulmer up top gives me 29 cards of him.

I just happened to run across these gold versions as well and added them.

This Finest card still leaves me 1 card short for that team set. That 1 card is a player collection so I'm sure at some point I'll pick it up.

I also like the Fire set but I could do without all the color parallels but they are pretty much a part of collecting now. The 2 above, leave me a card short of the team set as well. That is my 135th card of the MVP, Abreu.

These 2 cards leave me 1 short, again, of the team set but that last card is a short printed card of a player collection. The above cards of Reynaldo Lopez give me 24 of his, we're hoping for good things from him this year and maybe I'll get those numbers boosted as well.

I still need 3 cards to complete the Heritage set but all 3 of those are short prints and one of those is a variation short print. The above Avisail Garcia cards give me 36 cards of him. I thought I had more than that in the 6 years he was with us.

This Rodon leave me 1 short print short of completing that set but it's a short print variation card. This is my 46th card of the former Sox as they just released him after the 2020 season.

Last but not least, you can't go without having stickers. I'm still a few short of this team set even with the 5 above. The Derek Holland (3 cards) and Leury Garcia (9 cards) stickers are the first on this post of those players. The James Shields cards above give me 10 cards of him and the Yolmer Sanchez's give me 18 of him. Out of these 4 players, Leury is the only one still with the Sox.

2019 Team Sets

So the Sox are in the news again. The horrible hiring of Tony LaRussa is kicking them in the ass as it should because as I said, it was horrible. I'm hoping the DUI is enough to void his contract and we can move on from this mistake.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I went through all the sets in 2020 and 2019 and looked to see what Sox I need. I'll eventually move down to 2018 and keep going but for today, you get some 2019.

These are from the Bowman Heritage Prospects set. These 2 (and a PC not show) only make up half the team set. Dane Dunning on the left and Zack Collins on the right. Dane Dunning looks like he might have a bright future ahead of him. I'm not sure what's going to happen with  Zack Collins at this moment with 2 catchers above him but I'm guessing that McCann will probably be gone and he'll be our number 2. This is my 19th card of Zack Collins.

These are from the Bowman Draft & Chrome Prospects (have I mentioned that I hate Bowman). We have another Dane Dunning (19th card of him). I don't know much about Thompson (5 cards) or Pilkington (2 cards) but I know Micker Adolfo (2 cards) is supposed to be another one of our young studs. Something else that I know is the top 2 cards complete the Bowman Draft Sox team set and the bottom 2 complete the Chrome Prospects Sox team set.

I might have a few more of this guy than those guys above. This lone A&G of the MVP (hopefully) completes that team set as well. I actually bought this the same time I added a few others but the seller was a little slower shipping it to Sportlots so it came in the next months package. This is my 132nd card of Pito.

These 3 cards come from the Update set and they finish off that team set. You'll see the Anderson at the bottom again when I do his PC page. If I remember correctly, I didn't realize it was Timmy when I scanned it so you get to see it twice. As for Yonder (13 cards) and Leury (7 cards), Garcia got the better end of the deal as we picked up his option as he is a do all and play anywhere kind of guy and Yonder didn't do so well and got designated for assignment.

These 3 cards came from Baseballcardstore.ca and the rest of the cards in this post all came from Sportlots.

These 4 also complete the Opening Day team set so I did pretty well with this posts cards. Out of the 4 cards above, only Rodon (44 cards) is even still with the team and he missed most of 2019 and part of this year with Tommy John surgery. I liked Avi (32 cards) when he was with us but he battled a lot of injuries. Palka (14 cards) and Davidson (26 cards) had their moments when they displayed their power, but ultimately, neither could sustain it for long periods of time.

I don't know if I have more 2019 cards coming from Sportlots or not, guess we'll see next month.

More White Sox

I've been slacking on my posting. I keep falling asleep fairly early, I'm too old for 10 hour days. This will be my last post until next week as this is our annual Father's Day camping trip.

I read today where they may have a season yet. I'm sure I'll read tomorrow where there's no chance. I'm not even sure we should bother with one at this point. Don't get me wrong, I want to watch some baseball, but it seems kind of pointless now. We'll see what happens.

Today's post are even more White Sox cards so we'll just get to it.

We'll start off with some of Fulmer, he hasn't really grown on me yet, he's been pretty inconsistent. These 3 cards make 28 of his.

A few more odds and ends. You'll see the Dunning again later.

Last but not least, a bunch of Gypsy Queen. Up until the last couple of months, I was way behind on the last few years of GQ but I've been picking them up a lot lately. These 4 base leave me one short of the complete team set, minus the 3 SP's.

All the above cards came from my cousin's packages to me.

These 6 came from Sportlots, all 6 were under $.50, most were only $.18. All newer cards, if I'm not looking for something in particular, I look for the 2020 cards when I start shopping on Sportlots.

Also nabbed these 2 cards from Brian over at Highly Subjective and Completely Arbituary on his Free Card Fridays. They were 2 different Fridays so they were separate packages. The Frank Thomas is an odd looking card and the Dunning is the yellow border parallel. Thanks to Brian and all you others doing the free card posts. I'm generally to late to get in on most.

That's all for today, hope everyone has a great weekend! I'm looking forward to kicking back and doing nothing for 3 days.

A couple of Sox

This post will have a lot of cards in it. A lot of White Sox cards. My cousin sent me 2 packages last month. These are the Sox cards from the second package that came towards the end of the month.

Those are all the cards from 2016. He sent me a bunch of the Holiday set but I already had a few. The only one I need now is the Abreu, to bad that Frazier don't count since Abreu is on it.

More Frazier and Abreu and some guys you don't see much on Sox cards. I'll definitely take the Zach Putnam as he is a former Wolverine. I should look and see who has played for Michigan and the Sox. Off the top of my head, I already collect Jim Abbott and Chris Getz. I know of Putnam and Clayton Richard as well. There's probably others, probably others I know but can't think of right now. One of these days I should do a list. I'm not sure where I can find something like that but I'll figure it out.

These are all from 2017. Those 4 Topps (Holland is from Update) finish off that team set except for the 2 SP's of Sale and Abreu. Speaking of Abreu, those couple of cards up there make 107 of his in my Sox collection.

These 4 are from 2018. Decent shot of Saladino's mustache.

A couple more of Vaughn who is supposed to be a big deal, my cousin has sent me most of the cards I have of him, these 2 give me 13 total. The Frank Thomas puts his cards at 528.

Last but not least, the 2020. He sent me a bunch of the Gypsy Queen as well but I had bought some of the Sox already but I needed all of those.

2 Days, 4 Envelopes

I'm a slacker, again. I got a couple cards yesterday but I didn't post them. I got a few more today so you'll get the last 2 days worth.

We'll start with some White Sox pick-ups.

My White Sox collection knows this guy, it's the 398th card of Frank Thomas, which is my highest non-player collection amount of cards. High enough to be 3rd on my all-time list but the top 2 are player collection cards. I picked this up for $.45/shipped.

I picked up both of these 2019 Topps, which were my last 2 of Series 1 (minus the SP's) which is just in time since Series 2 is out. I picked them both up for $.23/shipped/each. This is my 7th card of Engel, and my 13th of Avisail. Both are no longer with the White Sox, at least the big club. Engel is back in the minors while Garcia got let go, I believe he's with Tampa Bay now.

I also picked up this heritage from the same seller as the above 2 cards. I'm still a few cards short of this team set, 6 to be exact. I paid $.35/shipped for it. It is only my 2nd card of our current closer.

Now on to the autograph portion of this post.

I picked up this auto of another former White Sox. This Topps Finest auto came to me for $1.58/shipped. This is my 15th card of Matt. He is now with Texas and when I was looking up at that info, it said he signed a minor league deal as a Infielder and a Pitcher. He had a couple of trips to the mound during blow outs and did pretty well, but I don't know about him becoming a pitcher. It would be pretty cool if he did the transition but you would think he'd want to me in the NL so he could hit too.

Last but not least, my first card of David Long which means a new player collection. I picked this one up for $2.25/shipped of this former Wolverine who was just drafted this year by the Rams. I really have to pay attention to his cards when I'm searching because another David Long got drafted from West Virginia this year as well.

I haven't forgotten about the cards Dennis sent me, I have to finish up the White Sox (I think that's it), I got all the player and Michigan collection cards done. I'm heading that way once this post is done.
