Terrific Monday

3 posts left and 4 evenings left. Perfect. I'll start off the new year with the cards I got in the mail today from Sportlots. It was a pretty huge package because I forgot to ship last month. Funny enough though, I opened the package, cleaned out the packing peanuts and grabbed one of the top packages. Flipped it over to cut the tape and who is looking back at me?

RIP Phil! It's been a hard year on former MLB players, even MLB HOF'ers have left at a lot quicker pace than I ever remember. I don't know if I'm just getting older so I'm noticing it more as some of these players I collected as a kid or if it's just a lot for the year.

Oddly enough, today's random was one of those players we've lost this year. I mentioned the other day when I did the Mark Buehrle post that MB was one of my favorite pitchers, this guy would be my favorite of all time.

These 5 cards came from Sportlots. I have to remember not to scan them this way, I can't get the photos any bigger. The first card also goes to the Johnny Bench and the Vintage collection. I was surprised I didn't have the 1983 Donruss which also goes to the Vintage collection. The middle cards are 1983 O-Pee-Chee and 1984 Topps Traded and the last card is one of the many small Fleer sets in the 80's. The 2 Sox cards also go to the White Sox collection.

These 5 all came from, you guessed it, Jeff at 2x3 Heroes. I like the look of the Warrior on the Diamond. Of course, a few vintage look a likes (Phil Niekro makes another appearance on the 1970 reprint) and I'm not sure which set the last card is supposed to be a replica of. I suppose I could Google it but I'm lazy and don't really need to know. Obviously it's the 1969 set but I don't know if they just made it for the Heritage set or if it's a replica of a subset in '69.

The 10 Tom Terrific cards on this page get my Seaver collection up to 398 cards but don't worry, it'll get over 400 once I get the new Sportlots package logged and scanned.

Vintage from Sluggo

Sluggo's been mentioned a number of times on this blog. He's my cousin who lives in North Carolina. He sets up at card shows and such so he gets to look at all kinds of cards. Unlike me, I'm lucky to take in a card show a year where as he does them almost every other week. He always comes across cards for me and since his work pays for him to ship UPS, he mails be boxes of cards every so often. This time, my mom was down south for their anniversary and met up with him for a meal and he sent a small package back with her to give to me. It was a pretty good package, he doesn't use my have lists so sometimes I get a bunch of duplicates. I only got a few in this package but that's mainly because of the contents.

All these card go to the Vintage Collection but I also got a few that were part of my player collections.

He sent me this Cal Ripken Jr from his 2nd year. This is the 2nd of his 3 1983 cards and I don't have any of his 1982 cards. This card makes 314 different cards of his that I have and it is the 35th 1983 Donruss of that set.

I could have sworn I have this but I'm pretty sure I have a reprint from one of the many sets that do that now. I want to say it was an insert reprint set from the early 2000's. If I wasn't lazy, I'd look for it and tell you for sure.  This is my 337th card of Tom Seaver.

These 3 cards all go to my Carl Yastrzemski Collection and gives me 36 cards. About half of those are from his playing days. Again, I thought I had the 1979 but apparently not so I guess that's why we keep lists.

The last card that gets included in the player collections as well is this 1970 Topps that goes to the Steve Carlton Collection. This is my 79th card of Steve Carlton and my oldest as well. This is also the 34th card of the 1970 Topps set.

That's it for the player collection portions, now on to the straight vintage portion.

He must have picked up a bunch of Nolan Ryan because you'll see him more than a couple of times. This 1983 Topps is my 97th card from that set which puts it at just over 12% complete.

2 more Nolan Ryan's and 3 more to the 1982 Donruss set. These 2 put that set at 426 cards which is almost 65% completed.

This is my 37th card from the 1982 Fleer set.

This is my 75th card of the 1982 Topps set which is just over 9% completed. See what I mean about all the Nolan Ryan's?

This is my 45th card of the 1981 Donruss set and it puts it at just over 7% completed.

Hey, it's not a Nolan Ryan. This is my 126th card of the 1980 Topps set which puts it at just over 17% completed.

2 more Nolan Ryan and 2 more 1979 Topps. These put my 1979 set at 311 cards and almost 43% complete.

Both of these 2 cards are from the 1978 Topps set and they are both Hall of Famers. This is the last Nolan Ryan you'll see in case you were hoping for more. I'm certainly not complaining about all of them. These 2 cards put that set at 117 cards and just over 16% complete.

This card of Lou Brock (which is a pretty awesome card) is my 157th card of that set which puts it at almost 24% completed.

These 4 great players put my 1975 Topps set at 31 cards which puts that set at almost 5% completed.

This 1972 Topps rookie card is my 32nd card which puts this at just over 4% complete.

These 2 1971 Topps are my 70th and 71st cards of the set. They put that at over 9% completed.

This Bill Buckner rookie from the 1970 Topps set puts that at 35 cards and almost 5% completed.

These 6 cards from the 1969 Topps set puts it at 36 cards and just over 5% compmleted.

This 1968 Topps card puts that set at 28 cards and almost 5% complete.

These 2 cards from the 1966 Topps set are popular players as well. They put that set at 21 cards and almost 6% complete.

But wait, there's more. He even sent me a couple of cards from the 50's.

This 1956 Topps of Herb Score is only my 4th card of that set and it puts it at just over 1% complete.

Finally, 1954 Topps card of Hank Bauer is only my 2nd card from that set which puts that at a measley just under 1% completed.

Absolutely great cards for the vintage collection.

New Additions - Vintage Collection (1974-1980)

*For those new to the blog, all purchases were made on Ebay (unless otherwise noted) and all were under $.50/shipped.

I'm listing Ebay stuff but also I got a package from Bru over at Remember the Astrodome so you'll see assorted stuff from him as well. He was originally going to hook me up with some 1984 Topps (which he did) but he ended up sending a bunch more vintage as well as some White Sox needs. I'll be randomizing the posts like I did the last bunch.

I'm guessing since Bru is a Houston Astros fan, that these were all dupes from his collection but they are a welcome addition to the Vintage collection here.

I actually bought 2 of these for the White Sox collection on accident but that just means that I picked one up for the Vintage collection. It was all intentional, I swear.

Some bonus cards this month, my cousin "Sluggo" has finished his 1973 set and is starting a 1974 set so he bought a lot on Ebay and sent me his dupes for my vintage collection. As you can see, a nice, healthy stack was added, the bad part, that was half the package. I still have some left (20 cards, including another of that top card up there) and since I'm not collecting the Traded set, I have a stack (59 cards) from it as well. If you're interested in them, let me know. There are dupes in both lots so don't expect 20 or 59 different cards. I'm not looking for a trade, if you're interested in one or all of them, let me know. If you have a needs list for this set, leave me the link in the comments and I'll see if there is anything up there you need.
