Welcome

This blog is about sports cards. I tend to only purchase cheap items so don't come hear expecting to see big money cards. My teams collections are Chicago White Sox and Michigan Wolverines. I also have a bunch of player collections.

Vintage adds

I told you that I went to my LCS yesterday and picked up more cards to sort so that's what I did today. He has a guy that buys packs, opens them up looking for I have no idea what, puts them back in the packs and then sells them to the LCS. I say I have no idea what because there isn't much missing from the packs, just a few cards (I assume). The stars are there as well as a whole lot of inserts so I'm guessing he's just looking for hits. Anyways, that's what I sorted today. I had said it was 2022 Update but I was wrong, it was all 2023 Topps series 1. Either way, it sucked for me because I have all the base of both those sets, I'll just be lucky to get some inserts.

I went through 4 Megas, 5 Blasters and 1 Hanger of 2023 Topps. When I sort, I look for myself and 2 other people (Dennis and Sluggo). After all was said and done, I only added 2 cards to my collections but 6 to Sluggo's and about the same (I forgot to count) to Dennis' stack. I added those cards to the random so we'll see if you get to see them today.

We start back up doing shows next weekend so maybe you'll see some better cards then.

It didn't take long to sort today, a little over an hour so I spent a few hours scanning and posting card pics to TCDB. I added 42 cards (42 fronts & 40 backs) so 82 scans in all. I have a long way to go but it was something, I may work on it some more tomorrow.

I added all of these to the Vintage collection from the sorting last weekend. As you can see, they are all Hall of Famers which is why they were in those particular boxes.

While I was on hiatus, I added quite a bit to my 80's sets. Here's where they stand now.

As you can see, I've gotten over 80% on all my 80's sets. Out of the 15 yet completed, 10 of those are over 90% complete and 3 sets are within 5 cards or less. This is on account of all the common stuff we bought and turned around. It was a lot of 80's so I grabbed up what I needed so a lot of it didn't cost me a dime.

This is where I stand on my 70's sets. I have picked up some of them as well but not nearly as much as I did the 80's. I only have 2 sets over 10% out of the 60's and my highest 50's is only at 4%.

3rd one down

I decided to go ahead and put out a post during the 2nd half of the Michigan game because I shut it off. I couldn't watch it anymore. I may take my White Sox rule that I use when watching their games. Record them all and only watch when they win (who has time to watch 162 games). I can handle watching them lose, I can't handle watching them in the state they are in. As I said on Twitter, they look like a freshman team who have never played together before. It's embarassing and I love Michigan too much that it hurts to watch them like that. We'll see, by the time the next game rolls around (Wisconsin if it doesn't get cancelled) I may watch it. I'm all emotion right now about it.

I got a couple of envelopes this week so since I didn't have to work today, I already got them scanned and added them to the list to random. I got my monthly package from Sportlots as well as another envelope from Jeff at 2x3 Heroes. According to my USPS Informed Delivery, my wife says I have another envelope in the mail today so maybe I'll get around to adding that tomorrow.

Back to a vintage/non-vintage post. This post will be 1987 but I've gotten a few comments from readers that say they don't consider 80's vintage. I do agree with that as I would consider 1980 and older to be vintage but I run my vintage collection up to 1987 because as a kid, I collected heavily until 1987. I slowed down for a couple of years after that and then stopped for awhile. So while I say 1987 is a part of my Vintage collection, I don't necessarily think it's a vintage year. That being said, let's get to it.

We'll start off with the Donruss, Jeff sent me 21 cards for that set. Love seeing the Doc Gooden as I was a big fan of his, pre drug days. These cards give me 304 cards for that set which is still under half but not by much.

Jeff also sent 12 more for the Fleer set which is behind the other 2 sets with only 257 cards which is under 40% completed. I had a ton of these, I think even a whole set of these when I was a kid.

To start off the Topps, I picked up all these at baseballcardstore.ca for a dime ($.14 if you add the shipping.) Some decent names up there, you can tell I'm getting closer to finishing the set.

I had to go to Sportlots for a few of the higher dollar cards. Higher dollar sounds odd when you're talking about 1987 Topps but there you go. I remember having multiple copies of all 3 of these cards as a kid.

Last but not least, Jeff also sent me this card of Ozzie Smith for the Topps set. What is the significance of this lone card?

That's right, another set down. This is the 3rd one completed this year following the 1985 Fleer & Topps set. As you can tell, I've made a little more concentrated effort to complete some. I started off with the sets that I was closest to finishing. It helps with Card Barrel and now Baseballcardstore.ca so I don't have to spend a fortune doing so.

So close

I occasionally go to TCDB just to see what sets in my vintage collection that I'm close to completing and then see what they have to see how close I can get. Today's post was one of those purchases.

I was pretty close to finishing the 1985 Fleer set so I grabbed all of these to get me so much closer. After adding these 12 cards, it only leaves me missing 11 to finish the set. Most of those names are more than my usual $.50 but I'm sure I'll pick them up sooner rather than later.

Vintage Mays and more

* I put my April incoming on random for today's post.

2 more days and 2 more posts. As I said in the last post, the last 2 are vintage posts and I already posted the 50's and the 60's so that should narrow it down for you. Before I get to the actual Vintage Collection cards, he sent me a couple that I'm keeping as well.

I always debated on collecting these checklists, because they are technically not park of the numbered set. I kind of feel that checklists should be part of the set so while I don't actively pick them up, I keep them when I get one.

I'm keeping this just because it's cool and it's Willie Mays. It's from a 1961 Topps Stamp set. It's listed as an insert from the 1961 Topps set.

Don Sutton and Nolan Ryan, yes please. My cousin sent these as part of his package. Obviously the Nolan Ryan card is pretty cool because I'm sure the base card is probably out of my cheap asses range. These 3 cards from 1975 give me 83 for the set.

He also sent this Don Sutton from the 1973 set that I needed.

These 14 cards from the 1973 set I picked up from Sportlots. I'm not going to post prices for each card but I did pay less than $.50 for each card. 4 of them were $.50 but the majority of them were $.18. The 15 cards put that set at 477 cards.

Next up is the few 80's that I picked up, I just about have everything scanned and ready to go for next month. That's what I worked on today.

New Additions - Vintage Collection, 1983

*For those new to the blog, all purchases were made on Ebay (unless otherwise noted) and all were under $.50/shipped.

I'm listing Ebay stuff but also I got an awesome package from Dennis over at "Too Many Verlanders" and my favorite "Too Many Manninghams", although you'll see a lot of that great stuff on the TMM blog whenever I get that post together. I also received 2 huge packages of mainly White Sox cards from Jeff over at "2 x 3 Heroes" as well and both guys also sent a bunch of vintage. I'm also randomizing the posts so let's see what's next.

2 more John Mayberry's and 2 more to the vintage collection from Dennis.

Jeff added 14 more to the Vintage collection, representing all 3 major brands in 1983.

I even managed to pick up 2 more for the Fleer and Topps set from Ebay.

In case you're interested, the reason I pretty much always post pics of single cards is because of these 2 blogs that I use to store my cards. My Personal Collections and My Baseball Card Obsession.
