1981 Topps–Rowland Office #319

I’m collecting the 1981 set, slowly but surely. This post is the latest in my quest for the completion.

  • Purchase Price – $0.11 (part of a lot – 9/$.99)
  • On the back (toon, bottom left) – Launched himself over centerfield fence to rob batter of a homer in 1977.
  • On the back (toon, bottom right) – It’s still considered the best catch ever at Atlanta Stadium
  • Drafted by the Braves in the 4th round
  • Debut – August 5, 1972
  • 1972, 1974-1979 (Braves), 1980-1982 (Expos), 1983 (Yankees)
  • Born in Sacramento, CA
Had 99 or more games from 1974-1980.  Only had 26 games in 1981, then only 5 more in the next 2 seasons before he retired.  Rowland played all 3 outfield positions throughout his career.  Ranked in the top 3 in fielding percentage in 1974 (2nd) and 1978 (3rd) at the centerfield position.  Played 1 game at first base in 1977.
