1973 Topps–Juan Marichal #480

I’m collecting the 1973 set, slowly but surely. This post is the latest in my quest for the completion.

  • Purchase Price – $.56 (Ebay lot, 4/$2.24)
  • On the back (toon) – Juan owns a farm in the Dominican Republic.
    • “Nicknamed “Dominican Dandy”.  Juan won 1965 All-Star Game & was voted game’s MVP.”
  • Signed by the Giants as a free agent in 1957.
  • Debut – July 19, 1960.
  • 1960-1973 (Giants), 1974 (Red Sox), 1975 (Dodgers)
  • Born in Laguna Verde, Monte Cristi, D.R.
Hall of Famer pitched for the Giants for the majority of his career (13 years) before playing with 2 teams (Red Sox, Dodgers) in 2 years before retiring.  Was a 9 time All-Star (1962-1969, 1971) including going home with an All-Star MVP trophy in 1965.  Led the league in ERA in 1969 (2.10), was 2nd in 1965 (2.13), and 3rd in 1966 (2.23).   Led the league in Wins in 1963 (25) and 1968 (26).  Led league in Complete Games in 1964 (22) and 1968 (30).  Led the league in Shutouts in 1965 (10) and 1969 (8).  Was the winningest pitcher in the decade of the 1960’s (191 wins).
