1973 Topps–George Scott #263

I’m collecting the 1973 set, slowly but surely. This post is the latest in my quest for the completion.

  • Card Facts – George Scott – Milwaukee Brewers – Card #263
  • Purchase Price – $.11 (Ebay lot, 40/$4.25)
  • On the back (toon) – George’s nickname is “Boomer”.
    • “George set a new Pilot-Brewer club record with 88 RBI’s in 1972, the previous mark of 82 was set by Tommy harper in 1970.  A fine hitter and slick fielder, George led club in Runs, Hits, Doubles and Triples.”
  • Signed by the Boston Red Sox as an amateur free agent in 1962
  • Debut – April 12, 1966
  • 1966-1971, 1977-1979 (Red Sox), 1972-1976 (Brewers), 1979 (Royals), 1979 (Yankees)
  • Born in Greenville, MS

Scott was 3rd in Rookie of the Year voting in 1966.  A year that saw him make his first of 3 All-Star games (1966, 1975, 1977). He was an 8 time gold-glove winner (1967-1968, 1971-1976) at 1st base.  His final season was spilt between 3 teams (Red Sox, Royals and Yankees).  Played mostly 1st base but had over 200 games logged in at 3rd.  Also played 40 games at the DH spot.  Was 2nd in batting average in 1973 with a .306.
