1981 Topps–Jay Johnstone #372

I’m collecting the 1981 set, slowly but surely. This post is the latest in my quest for the completion.

  • Signed by the Los Angeles Angels as an amateur free agent in 1963.
  • Debut – July 30, 1966
  • 1966-1970 (Angels), 1971-1972 (White Sox), 1973 (A’s), 1974-1978 (Phillies), 1978-1979 (Yankees), 1979 (Padres), 1980-1982, 1985 (Dodgers), 1982-1984 (Cubs)
  • Born in Manchester, CT

That’s a bunch of teams.  I remember him from the Dodgers and Cubs.  But then again, those are the teams he played for when I was getting into baseball as a youngster.  I’m not sure I even remember him playing for the Sox, card wise that is, I wasn’t alive yet when he actually did.

  1. I remember a Phillies/Pirates game in the mid-1970s when Johnstone (who was playing right field) wandered into 1st base, the catcher fired a bullet to him, and they picked off Frank Taveras!
