1973 Topps–Chris Speier #273

I’m collecting the 1973 set, slowly but surely. This post is the latest in my quest for the completion.

  • Purchase Price – $.11 (Ebay lot, 40/$4.25)
  • On the back (toon) – Chris once played semi-pro ball in Canada! 
    • “One of the finest young shortstops in the National League, Chris’ greatest baseball thrill was “my first major league game, at San Diego; went 2-for-4 and a couple of good plays, but mainly just being on the same field with the best in baseball.”  Chris was selected by his opposing players as the shortstop on Topps 1971 Major League Rookie All-Star team.”
  • Drafted by the Giants in the 1st round (2nd pick) in 1970.
  • Debut – April 7, 1971.
  • 1971-1977, 1987-1989 (Giants), 1977-1984 (Expos), 1984 (Cardinals), 1984 (Twins), 1985-1986 (Cubs)
  • Born in Alameda, CA
Chris made the All-Star game 3 times in a row from 1972-1974.  He made 2 postseason’s in his playing career and once as a coach on the Champion Diamondbacks 2001 World Series wins.  He is currently the bench coach of the Cincinnati Reds.  His son, Justin, was a relief pitcher in the majors (1998-2009).
